If my understanding is correct, then for example, an indexed treasury bond with $100 face value and 3% interest rate is trading for $146. Inflation is 15% since its issue: Say I put $14.6k in, it looks like I'd get about $345 in interest p.a. Then if I held it to maturity in 2025 I might get something like $12.5k back, meaning all up I'd lose 1k.

There's a difference between buying individual bonds and buying bond ETFs. The former will always give you a positive nominal yield if you hold to maturity - i.e. more dollars than what you put in (assuming your government doesn't go Full Argentina and default).

The latter are pools of money that buy and sell a variety of different bonds which can lose money. For example, suppose an ETF was required to own 9-10 year bonds and to start they buy a pile of 10 year bonds at the beginning of the year for 3%.

Then rates rise and a year later they have to sell these now 9 year bonds at a 4% yield price (even though the bonds have a 3% coupon) and reinvest the money from those sales into fresh 10 year bonds. That pool of money would be less than 103% of the starting capital.

Obviously both of those are garbage bets if you experience, say, 10% inflation over the course of that year. Which is a fact that's been heeming financial markets for some time now.

I didn't read the part about it being a covered call. In that case gamma is less of a concern since I rarely buy them back. If you're okay with selling the shares at the strike price and it's not below your cost basis, just sell the dte where you're happy with the premium.
