Hi

>> No.52965932

New to precious metals and looking to invest and have a few questions. I'm in the UK and have around £5,000 to start with.

Can someone here give me some advice on what to buy at the moment?

What is with all the hype on here with silver at the moment, is there expected to be an extreme spike/rise in the price of silver in the near future? If so, why is the same not expected to happen for gold?

I was initially going to buy some gold, but after seeing all the talk about silver on here i'm not so sure.

Also, am I right in assuming that the general idea of investing in precious metals is that they hold their value much better than fiat currencies?

reposted from the last thread to get some more answers

Like the other dude said, maybe buy 4 sovs or 1 oz gold then get the rest in Britannias to make a start. Giving you about 100oz silver a 1oz gold. You are now starting with a. Comfy stack.

You can then fuck about getting kooks, coomer coins or old coins you like for reasons without having to compromise your stack being smaller because you get caught up in meme coins or shreks etc that cost waaaay more that’s sport

So is platinum actually manipulated like gold and silver are? Registered and eligible seemed about equal in that chart posted in the last thread. And aren't catalytic converters being phased out long term thanks to electric cars which would cause platinum and palladium to do down?

Only anti-silver shills post this, the pic is bad and useless. It makes no sense to not hoard massive amounts of physical silver right now considering the current ridiculous price ratio and the imminent depletion of the comex.
You should get both metals at 1:100 (for every ounce of gold you get 100 ounces of silver) weight ratio, maybe even more, like 1:200, 1:500.

a friend did me the favor and corrected my erroneous thinking of precious metals being an investment, and focused on the collecting aspect instead. look, you're never gonna sell any silver or gold in the future, it's just something to stack that isn't fiat. as much as 4chan users (/pol/ specifically) love to fap in their own feces, imagining the end of days when nuclear apocalypse is the norm and we're all shitting into buckets and trading handjobs for a can of beans while packs of feral niggers roam the world, raping and impregnating anything with a heart beat, you'll never see a monetary turnaround from investing into precious metals.

As far as I take it, pmg’s are a store of value and a good way to long-game speculate. Most stack a 100:1 ratio but that’s only super general, ie one ounce of gold for every 100oz of silver and I think that’s just because of the cost. In general silver has a LOT more room to go up, so you can increase a stack buying silver, and then when the price of silver goes up closer to gold (as a ratio) you can exchange your silver for gold, and when silver goes down (or gold goes back up.. it’s about the ratio really..) you can exchange your gold back for silver, usually by just going in person to a coin shop, knowing the spot and ratios, and exchanging fair values.

If your a rich anon then gold can be a good store of value for cold hard cash. If you’re still trying to make it, stacking silver can give you a chance when the price might move up.

I’ve got a close 100:1 ratio going, and let’s say 30% of my silver stack is for the grandkids and the other 70% of the stack is for their house once silver goes up towards the latter part of the century.

Don’t spend money you don’t have, don’t buy on credit cards. Slow stacking is better than cutting into savings and expenses, but is better than no stacking. Anons pls correct me if any of that’s wrong.

My copypasta answer responds with, "Here are some options to consider" so you can decide for yourself.
- When a new series of artful or themed bullion (especially coins) is issued, the first of the series are usually missed by later collectors. They will pay high premiums to fill in the series. Consider the potential for series' popularity: generic and/or cringeworthy-themed series are less likely to appreciate above spot.
- Low-mintage series are often priced very high, but may increase in price the most (consider design popularity!).
- Gov't-issued coins cost least while minted. Once the mintage stops and dealers run out of stock, the prices jump then rise more slowly but still faster than generic silver. Maples, Eagles, Wieners, Britannias, etc. are all nice but boring. The mint may add a privy to add novelty thereby ginning up the price. Stuff that changes overall designs from year to year become series (Somali elephants, Canadian Wildlife, Australian kookaburras or koalas, island nations' series, etc.).
- If you buy pieces that appeal to your sense of art, taste, and interests, you will still appreciate them even if the price or value of the PM goes nowhere. Caveat: if you go to sell, it's harder to part with them.
- Some beautiful generics are priced comically high (Germanias, GSM special editions, e.g.) - they don't follow the market trends as readily, garnering peak price only while fashionable. Be aware: dealers may categorize and price these as "generic" (meaning below spot) when buying them from you. Or the gamble might pay off as they become very popular (Englehard, PAMP, antique miners/refiners, e.g.).
- For new generic bars, watch the markups over spot: premiums (added charges) go up for smaller pieces.
- Shipping is an added premium. Many vendors offer free shipping for purchasing a minimum amount (commonly $200).
- Keeping a spreadsheet of your purchases to track profit/loss is quite revealing and will help you make future decisions.

No, you will want both as they are complementary to one another and serve different spending habits in a decentralized economy. Gold is the more liquid metal, but it also makes it more likely to be confiscated from banks and nation states. Silver is too cumbersome for them so they're more likely to ignore it. I've never heard of any state passing laws to confiscate silver.

From Gold Wars by Kerry Mitchell:

> China, meanwhile, has bluntly expressed its opinion on state radio. "The US and Europe have always suppressed the rising price of gold. They intend to weaken gold's function as an international reserve currency. They don't want to see other countries turning to gold reserves instead of the U.S dollar or euro." A Beijing embassy cable released by Wikileaks suggests that the Chinese have a policy of steadily undermining Western currencies by accumulating gold. A follow-up document accused the US of "doing everything possible to prevent China's foreign reserve from buying gold."

> In October 2009, the Chinese government received a shipment of gold. In a normal assay, they drilled out bars and found they were filled with tungsten. The serial numbers traced back to Fort Knox. Over 5000 400oz bars were found to be counterfeit... Chinese officials caught and questioned some of the perpetrators. They traced the crime back to the Clinton administration under Robert Rubin's time at the treasury helm.

> In 2012, China increased its gold imports by 780%. Then it went big, importing 1200 tons by March 2013. The Chinese government only makes an announcement of official gold holdings every four or five years. The numbers of official gold holdings every four or five years. The numbers are not valid - China holds far more gold, likely multiples of the stated amounts. Official holdings are 1054 tons, but they imported 100 tons in one month, and just from their Hong Kong channel.

> In a March 2013 press conference, Vice Governor Yi Gang of the People's Bank of China made a puzzling and contradictory statement. China had no plans to increase its gold reserves from 1054 tons, he said, since it's worried about adverse effects to the gold price. He then seemingly contradicted himself by pointing out China's goldmines produce 400 tons per year and the country imports 500 tons per year.

What I've heard is that if an ounce of gold 'should' cost 15 times more than an ounce of silver; if it costs more than that then you should be buying mostly silver, and if it costs less than that then you should be buying mostly gold. Obviously you can't boil everything down to a single ratio but that's why a lot of people are saying silver is a better investment right now.

>I'm scared to cut open the plastic cuz I might scratch it.
If you're a panda collector, then I recommend leaving the gold pandas in their plastic wrap from the mint. The frosted parts scuff very easily and the shinier bits are basically proof finishes (which also scratch easily). Plus, being in the original plastic wrap from the mint helps their resale value. I pretty much only see gold pandas in their original plastic or in the graded slabs.

Pic related was the kind of scuffing that occurred after opening a few 30g gold pandas and stacking them for 1 evening and taking some pics before putting them into capsules the next day. A scuffed panda is still worth its weight in gold, however, pandas always gain numismatic value over time, due to each year being unique, so why take away from that?

Depends on the material. If that's just epoxy or plastic, you can drill a hole through the middle (don't hit the coins), put a spike into the hole, and then use a mallet to shatter it apart. That's probably what I would do.

If it's glass, you could probably just skip straight to the spike and mallet. I'd be hella careful where I do it, someplace where I could easily clean the shards and wear goggles.

I definitely am... think I'm the first guy to post their own pandas on /pmg/ lol

>The frosted parts scuff very easily and the shinier bits are basically proof finishes (which also scratch easily). Plus, being in the original plastic wrap from the mint helps their resale value. I pretty much only see gold pandas in their original plastic or in the graded slabs.
Pretty much confirming all my own thoughts...I don't think I've even taken any of my silver pandas out of their cases yet lol. I can't stand the idea of them being anything less than in their pristine unfondled sealed condition

>Pic related was the kind of scuffing that occurred after opening a few 30g gold pandas and stacking them for 1 evening and taking some pics before putting them into capsules the next day.
Im sorry that happened Fren. I'm always worried about things like that happening. I'll fondle eagles and buffalos but not pandas

>pandas always gain numismatic value over time, due to each year being unique, so why take away from that?
My thoughts exactly. Also im pretty jelly
Of your numerous gold pandas

Sterling jewellery is really unequal, sometimes it's just poured in a shoddy way, when it's nice and solid + properly polished (like yours appears to be) it's a real treat

Call me a hipster all you want, but I really like this single-origin gold idea!
But… how much of a premium is it? For “green” bars it’s actually not that much more, probably my next buy, but I’m afraid this coin is going to be hilariously expensive.

Don't you dare melt that block! It's more valuable as a set.
I can easily trade you a mint set in the original envelope for the block if you'd rather. I have several.
I also have some in the vinyl with the 67 sterling centennial medals.
I am somewhat obsessed with the Canadian 67 sets.
