BTC was no longer Bitcoin after the segwit update. The split between bch and btc happened over the segwit update. The legacy chain was bch, and then that split into BSV after BCH developed wormhole, which makes BSV the legacy chain.

A protocol is a collection of agreed apon language that allows connected computers to communicate about the functions the protocol allows them to do.
If you change the functions of the protocol their is no way for the networkes machines to agree and communicate anymore. This is what a Fork is.
When released bitcoin had an expansive set of functionality that defined it as bitcoin. Changing this functionality changes the design of bitcoin and forks the protocol away from what bitcoin is.
A fork leaves two protocols, whichever is closer to the original bitcoin design is bitcoin.
There's only one coin out there that now uses the original bitcoin design.
