I watched the video below over the weekend and it's been on my mind, wanted to ask y'all about it. Does anyone on /smg/ use a brokerage account in lieu of a checking account? I'm finally starting to have a fair amount of liquid money piling up in my life (coming close to $70k not including 401k, investments, etc., not a huge amount but overall feel good about my finances) and don't want it sitting around collecting dust (note that I pay everything with my Amex Platinum so I very rarely need immediate access to my cash). If anyone does do this, are there any tips you might have? Do paychecks get deposited just like they would into checkings/savings?

My brokerage and checking accounts are separate but both at Schwab so transfers are instantaneous while still making accounting easy for things like Mint.

Especially if you're using credit cards with month+ long payment lags, there's no need to hold excess cash in checking and savings accounts often pay less than money market funds or T-bills in brokerage accounts. As for workflow, paychecks into checking -> sweep any excess (beyond what's needed for monthly rent/bill/cc payments) into the brokerage.

Now what to put your 70k cash buffer into? Look into I-Bonds to start. The rest can go into your money market fund and that's almost certainly "good enough". Things like BIL and SHY get into autistic min-maxing territory.
