My coworker lives near the tourist area and says crime is rampant down there. Every time the guy leaves his condo there's either a shooting that just happened, a car crashed into a store, or some gang is stalking the street looking to mug people. Maybe 10 years ago that place had promise, but IL has made so many fuckups since then that I don't see that place recovering.

The ghetto in Dallas has police presence on every corner at night and instant SWAT teams when the niggers want to play gang wars. They will actually bomb you if you get too uppity here. The tech side of Dallas has 20 miles of completely unwalkable, and thus nigger and homeless proof, city as a buffer. This is why Plano is a supreme place for the superior tech worker.

I'd argue there's more promise now than 10 years ago. Violence was at an all-time high in 2012 and has been on a steady downturn since, the city is gentrifying quickly and neighborhoods that were complete no-go zones 10 years ago are the hottest places to live now, and the poorest residents are being pushed out to inner-ring suburbs or migrating south (actually a great development). The state budget has actually been balanced and seems to be going in the right direction.

So still a lot of fuckups to fix but it seems to be going in the right direction, despite what you see in the media every day. Maybe it's stockholm syndrome, but that's just what I've seen on the ground here.

If you can't handle the city, you can always move to a comfy suburb and just commute on the Metra. It's pretty comfy, usually an all-white crowd if you're commuting in and out of the loop each day.

And if you're in tech, you can probably get a hybrid schedule where you'll only have to go into the city once or twice a week.
