Well, obviously not! Nothing is "risk free".
But holding your own stuff is the one with lowest risk.
Would any reasonable person really suggest website storage is safer?

A few weeks ago I moved $3800 from Coinbase to my new Ledger - it was terrifying even with small test transactions and double checking everything twice.. But 99% losing money is ridiculous.

Eh, he's said the same thing in previous AMAs when asked about self custody, so nothing to do with timing on his part. It's the media that's sus, again.

And yeah that number is probably not too far from the truth.

Self custody is actually difficult, people save seed phrases to their computer which they lose or get hacked, if they write seed phrases down they lose them. More often people just make a wallet and don't save the seed phrase at all and lose it all when they lose their phone or their computer crashes.

It's probably the biggest reason crypto isn't the future of finance. People just can't handle self custody.

This.

Last week I moved 800 bucks to ledger and my exchange kept saying "transaction pending transaction pending"

There was probably a 5 min delay before the BTC showed up in ledger. Those were 5 long minutes

Having helped a couple normies get into crypto in the last couple years I have come to the conclusion they simply aren't capable of doing self-custody.
We need some new service for them to hold most of their crypto in a way that its insured.

you don't even need your seed phrase stolen of you keep your coins on your daily use machine
