It depends where you live. I never went to university for a degree. I left school at 18 in the UK and started applying for apprenticeships. I got hired at a global fintech company with no experience or a degree. I'm still at the same company and I worked there for more than five years now.

Apprenticeships are a viable option. I started from the bottom and earned just above minimum wage. I worked full time and studied part-time to earn my qualifications. The company I'm with isn't a small or medium sized business, so they had a full apprenticeship scheme that allowed us to get a bachelor's degree at the company's expense. Each year I rotated teams and gained experience in various departments. I learnt mostly on the job and I had maybe 2-3 promotions since starting.

Just find literally the worst job you can think of and do it for six months. Then ask a cousin or friend to recommend you for something in their company that is vaguely aligned with your career goals. Do that job for 12 solid months. Then post some gay shit on LinkedIn and within 30 days you will hear from a recruiter. It's that simple.

If you apply to 1000x random places you will get 999 disappointments. 1 will hire you for 5 months and then fire you and you won't even be able to use the referral and it will stunt your career for a decade because you will look unhireable due to a weird gap in your resume.

Working is for plebs in any case, but you're a dumb dog if you believe in "work hard" meme at some big company. You're that weird ugly guy who gets all the work because you failed to grasp that IRL is not a meritocracy (it actually is, but you'd have to have a very high IQ to understand how).

Unless working for yourself or following some real passion, here's the guide to working:
>show up, do fuck all day
>try to look like you are doing something though
>social standing matters more than if you're a good worker
>take your time to gauge how much is the bare minimum and stick with it
>never do a great job because then the expectation is to deliver
>put as much work as possible on others
>call in sick as much as possible
>take as many days off as legally possible
>be as selfish as legally possible without being fired

If you care about "hard work" start your own firm and stop being a cuck.

I work for a few months in a year, do nothing but save up, and then have no work for the remainder of the year to pursue things I care about. I don't have a career, and normoids are quick to point that out, but they're also envious of my lifestyle and wish they had the guts to do the same

This is the reality for the next few years
The thing about rapid changing salaries like this is that it will affect everything else like dominos. You aren't alone, there's hundreds of SWE/full stack devs that are already being faced with $0 or salary cuts to the tune of $100k, most recently saw a post on /g/ where a guy who was paid $250k was offered, get laid off, or take a salary cut down to $165k.

The thing is, that guy has probably built himself around that salary, so now he is faced with the dangerous decision of seeking other work during a recession for similar pay, or taking the L. He'll probably have to sell his house, and overall downsize his life. This is how the real estate market will begin it's spiral, when people like this are forced to downsize their lives because they took salary hits.
And on top of all this, it's amazing that chatGPT was introduced during these tumultuous times, normally I'd say "yeah the sector could bounce back by 2025" but anymore it seems like AI is significantly raising the bar of entry, so these salary cuts could honestly be permanent and I don't think tech workers are ready for that truth either.
Not to mention that this will curb consumer spending by a lot, you think people are gonna take salary hits and continue spending the way they did? No, I think most of these tech workers will try to sustain their lives as long as possible to try and "wait out the recession" and only the strongest among them will make it out the other side.

Been in the financial sector for over a decade , so if this hits tech like it hit us in 08 when I first started, consider the above.

Lie if you have to because 99% of jobs will train you on the job. It's been like that for at least 20 - 25 years.

What you really need is to get someone in the market or job you want to apply into and get them to help write (or better yet actually write) your resume. Hopefully they aren't shit wankers.

The last job I had, which is similar to what I have now, a manager that took over my team just came off a stint as a hiring officer within the business (I personally asked for them to run a "how to apply to jobs within the business" workshop for the team) I took lots of notes and asked a lot of questions.

Ever since then I have never been knocked back for a job. The problem is there is a lot of language, and points to hit for a lot of job types and they're not all logical.

You practically have to say you've done the job (or something very similar). Coming out of uni you would expect a level of onboarding but that just doesn't exist anymore.

>Thinks AI auto correct for basic tasks will any way replace even a semi-competent SWE.
Checks out. It's funny to see people who have obviously never coded a large project claim that AI will inevitably replace the average programmer. There are way too many complexities in real world problems that AI won't be able to scale to solve for a long time. Even then, adding the context for your company's very specific domain knowledge to a program won't work well with a generalized AI model trained on open source GitHub repos and public stack overflow questions.

I mostly agree with the rest of your post though. Many SWE had been paid too much for too long and the fat was needed to be trimmed eventually. If there's ever another strong bull market these people probably won't have trouble finding jobs again. But as you said that probably won't happen for at least a few years.
