I agree that this is concerning
that the only reason the report went down pretty much was due to energy prices moving down lower
natural gas is already up to $7 from trading near $5 in November / recently
oil also is also pulling up / stopped crashing, and is projected to rise further
the report will make the dollar fall, which will further push up these energy commodities
which will further exacerbate inflation
and if housing remains 0.6%-0.8% MoM when we don't have energy padding the numbers going to be ugly

>> No.52847836

sounds like you're new to this, what you're missing is a fundamental understanding of asset classes and how they project the future
markets are not the economy
and the economy is not the market
US stocks look about six months ahead at best; when retail speculation is hot that becomes far more myopic, it becomes disjointed from reality
oil is literally priced in futures, thus also looks ahead, 6 months to 1 year out. in a crisis there is physical inventory to actually move and the oil market becomes blind temporarily, like a week maybe.
fixed assets like bonds, gold: these investors can see well over a year into the future -- and nothing else. this does not include precious metals STOCKS obviously. nor does it include bond FUND managers.

layoffs are good for the companies, thus good for their earnings, and their earnings are coming in the future. that is when returns happen
what will you pay right now for those returns? less and less, if prime rates continue up
they are no longer continuing up
YESTERDAY they were still pricing in some risk of a continued rise
but now we have a better-than-expected CPI number, so literally everything just exploded in price to close that gap, similar to arbitrage

in the last several months we have seen 30 year mortgage rates move sharply lower
this will increase the demand for housing / increase closings
if you have this happen too soon, the imbalances will persist, and pop back up
if you have more supply than demand of housing, house prices will go down, rent will go down - this is healthy
this is now being stopped prematurely by a market trying to front run, which will make the problem persist

>Monetary policy affects the economy and inflation with uncertain lags, and the full effects of our rapid tightening so far are yet to be felt. Thus, it makes sense to moderate the pace of our rate increases as we approach the level of restraint that will be sufficient to bring inflation down. The time for moderating the pace of rate increases may come as soon as the December meeting. Given our progress in tightening policy, the timing of that moderation is far less significant than the questions of how much further we will need to raise rates to control inflation, and the length of time it will be necessary to hold policy at a restrictive level. It is likely that restoring price stability will require holding policy at a restrictive level for some time. History cautions strongly against prematurely loosening policy. We will stay the course until the job is done.

it's meaningless. the inflation rate coming down means all the inflation happened in the past. it does not go back in the bottle, the fed no longer does that. the faux tightening is going to end the minute they get any excuse, and today they probably got it.
those dollar figures are simply the "new normal," $7 and $70. real risk is evaporating. the distance from $5 to $7 would have mattered last year but not anymore: from $7 you don't have $2 of wiggle room either way. even if you did, that's 28% instead of 40%.
the latest movers are the ones with the lowest information and have the stickiest price problems. rents and mortgage payments, employee count and wages, these are people's life changes -- not contracts for barrels of oil. at inflection points they are pure noise.

we are not seeing it in the jobs market - a CPI report coming in a bit lower due to energy costs falling the previous month, and then rebounding back to where they were previously isn't a great data point for the Fed to base their decisions off of
>stickiest price problems
this is the issue as I see it - that rents, wages, will remain sticky - any short term fluctuations in energy prices will make the report look good, but if the following month rents wages remain stubbornly high, and energy has now sharply rallied, then you have no padding no cushion from energy prices falling and you still have the sticky parts of the economy high

you saw record inflation last year and rates held back speculation for months
now we know for sure the rate hikes will dry up and 5% won't happen, where yesterday 5% was at some risk of happening -- depending who you ask that could be anywhere from a 1% risk to like a 50% risk.
but the argument over how risky something is, is qualitatively different from turning that risk off completely. it's an entire change of course for the monetary system. people who have lived through the tech bubbles, who run investment firms then and now, have established a culture that reacts strongly to that so as not to miss "the next wave up."
it may not come, of course, but it probably will. "from our new monetary supply level, now replay the last 10-year bull market." that's what they're thinking.
hedge funds in particular also lost all year long. they got BTFO by oilbros who understand what the setup was, and saw it was no different from usual, covid or no covid.
not only do they share the outlook i just mentioned.. they're thirsty as fuck this month.

"literally booming"
>Part of it is due to the way each survey counts a job. The Household Survey counts employed people. If you have two jobs, you’re still just counted as one employed person in that survey. But if you are working full-time and go out and get a part-time job in order to make ends meet, the Establishment Survey will count that as a “new” job. One person with two jobs counts as two jobs in the Establishment Survey.
WFH tech fags are moonlighting on the boss's time, everyone else in this pool now working 12 or 16 hours
>Another factor juicing the number of “new jobs” is the Establishment Survey does not count unincorporated self-employed workers. As small businesses shut down and workers shift into corporate jobs, the Establishment Survey records them as “new” jobs even though the worker has only shifted from uncounted self-employed work to counted corporate work.
covid killed hundreds of thousands of small businesses
and don't forget -- record explosion in credit card use, rates as high as 30%, and it's being spent on food and gas
you are in a recession
you have been in a recession
joe biden gave you a recession
it did not last one week, it's still here
we "need" the rate cut now to keep the government finances from blowing a hole in the dollar, and to keep a full-blown decade-long depression at bay, and it will once again sellout the future for the sake of the present
it would be great to not do this to zoomers, but they hate gen x and millenials and call us "boomers" even though the boomer generation is over half dead and gone and another 20% hanging out in assisted living, so, fuck zoomers lmao

I'd say ~10% is profit, mostly from divvies. It would be higher, but I made some bad plays with copper miners, and a few bad options plays.
Much safer decisions now, though; much more informed.

2. a little over 20x on bitcoin from around 2013 to the top tick in 2017 -- sold and never looked back
3. OXY when oil went negative -- holding, its future is bright
4. and no dumbfuck speculation positions larger than $1000 until this very year where i feel like $5000 is now acceptable
right now today:
1. just been rolling CDs until jan 2023 with like 15-20% of portfolio
2. everything else, hold
for the future:
1. berkshire hathaway
2. uranium
3. emerging markets equities (in 401k) and short-term govt debt (taxable private acct)

DXY is down because longterm rates are down, because inflation expectations are down.
This was always going to be a temporary effect, because rates staying high for an extended period literally means the printing of more dollars. So DXY pumped, and now it dumps.

That's sort of true, but Japan was intervening in small moves on the slide down to 150 as well.
Their interventions were merely able to temporarily stall the yen decline. Note that the Euro is actually outperforming the yen, although the yen has held well despite keeping rates at zero - meaning there'll be no future reversal due to rate cuts.
The real problem with the yen (long term) is that Nips are dying. Same issue in South Korea. Will the currency outlive the population?
