I got approved for a credit card today. I want to work my way up to one that gives you cash back on everything. I really want more gold, so I'm actually inspired to nickel and dime everything in a way I never have. If I can reduce my expenses to nearly zero I'll have gold to balance my silver in a few months. Then I may but more silver, don't know.

Another question, how much pair fiat and bank ledger money should one keep on hand? Like what's the ideal ratio between PM stack, bank ledger, and paper fiat? In a long term crisis gold and silver are the best bet, but if we have a short term grid down thing, I think paper cash will be more practical.

>> No.52807616

>>52807555
I think ideally you would want twice as much money stashed away as a plane ticket to the other side of the world, however much that is at the time. right now that'd be like $3k. I wouldn't want to do this if I didn't have at least 10x that value in PMs and I don't so I don't. a few hundred bucks in divisible bills is probably ideal for the average joe.

And how much in the bank? At the moment, my stack is over triple my checking and "savings" combined.
Also, why do we even have "savings" accounts anymore? It's an anachronism. Back in the day you got interest on it. Now the interest is so low it might as well be zero, and you can change the values from anywhere, anytime, so the distinction is virtually meaningless.

Ok Anons, I've been wanting to get one of these for a while but just recently snagged one in stock:
Golden Eagle Coin's grab bag Sterling Silver 10oz lot.
Overall weight is 10oz, so ASW should be 9.25oz.
It cost me $258 for reference.
My overall weight was 10.046 ozt.
Overall there are some pros and cons.
Cons:
2x 90% Panamanian coins fell in the lot. These are desirable coins as-is so I'll let it slide.
A moderate amount of maimed silver. Scratches, bends, and a couple had holes. That said, it's mostly the 3p, Canadian 5c and 10c that had these problems. Clearly they're using these grab bags as a means to get rid of them at a better profit point than refining them.
There is such a large amount of Canadian 5 and 10c. This is a personal thing, but I don't care much for them, I'll likely piecemeal them out on reddit or ebay.
Pros:
FOUR crowns. I'm impressed. 3/4 are cleaned, but at $27.84/oz, I can't complain. I expected one or maybe two.
A lot of Victorian stuff, much more than I was expecting. I was expecting mostly Australian George VI sterling.
Some of these older coins have solid details and may get thrown in my albums.
Overall, I'd say I'm quite satisfied with the grab-bag and would do it again.

yeah, I don't keep a savings account whatsoever. my PMs ARE my savings, and they have already drawn handsome interest. You see it! As spot prices climb, I have not seen the really pricey coins' prices go up. So maybe when things get expensive, bite the bullet and get the high-premium coins?

My other really, really big concern is, that Coral Sea and pic related may be considered "Cinderella" coins, ala stamp collecting. There are countries (islands) that make stamps that will clearly never be used for postage, and real collectors spurn them. Will that happen with the extra value on these island nation coins?

And will their value go up after they get swamped by rising sea levels?

I believe they think you are shilling paper metal instead of actual metal. To answer your question buying paper metal is the equivalent of one of those "own a star" companies, only its worse because if you "buy" a star you at least get a physical piece of paper you can hold and wipe your ass with, buying paper metal you dont even get the paper these days. So don't buy a digital iou for metal just buy the metal and call it a day.

That's what I'm also wondering.
All those "limited edition" collectibles, do they really get collected? AFAIK all valuable collectibles became so over time/by accident, and not because they were made as such.

Anyone have a 1949 Mexican 33.625g .925 silver bullion ounce? As I understand it was the first 1ozt asw silver coin/round and a nifty piece of stacking history. Maybe they were popular among forward-thinking protostackers a generation or 2 before boomers entered the scene. Checked. I actually like the idea behind the P7. From an engineeringvstandpoint the design of operation is fairly brilliant. The execution is poor, since you could grill steaks on it after you shoot through a magazine. Then there's that hideous grip safety that came about as a post-initial-design bureaucratic insertion.
It's ugly, and you could use it to heat a house. And they're expensive. Not something I pine for. I like the concept like I said. I suppose they make for good memorabilia and conversation pieces. I'd never own one without it being gifted to me.

Honestly looks really sus, it appears modern and the hallmark looks "rough" instead of nice and clean and crisp like on legit professionally made pieces. Being solid instead of having hollowed recesses behind/inside the bulky design elements is also suspect, normally they'd conserve gold. I bought a fake gold ring (it was sold as gold plated sterling so was cheap) to study and it had both karat and millesimal stamps which was a bit weird, was all solid with no voids for metal thrifting typical of real gold, and the stamps looked "rough" too. The gold plating was quite thick but upon cutting deep enough the shiny silver core was obvious. If it's a few bucks then it can't hurt but chances are that it's fake, my spidey senses don't like it.

good point but there are lots of solid pieces. I actually prefer solid ones because water doesn't get trapped against your finger and make your skin rash.

I feel like hollow pieces became popular when rapper ice became a thing because people want gold and diamonds without paying the big price so the jewellers make everything super hollow and easily dented. I've dented rings just taking them off because of how they are constructed.

In my more limited observations solid pieces are older and that ring looks quite modern, which also makes the rough hallmark more suspicious. If you get it, cut deep and let us know how it goes. Gotten a few chunky sterling items containing nearly a kilo of pure a piece for just $4 each at that store as well, true cheapies are delightful. If you don't monitor your local thrifting scene it would definitely be worth your time since you have lots of experience and a trained eye, at worst you could arrange to buy jewelry at a better price than the cash 4 gold shops and probably get some valuable pieces to resell mixed with the scrap.

I prefer the .1867 size, they're usually alot more cost effective. The premium is usually half percentage-wise

1:100 is standard as far as /pmg/ is concerned
silver is only "heavy" because it is so underpriced. that's kind of the point.

Are you a multimillionaire capable of buying investment grade gems and not just jewelry gems which are highly overpriced?
Diamonds are a great way of smuggling billions of dollars in a very small package but they aren’t divisible the way gold and silver are. Unless you’re literally worth at least 9-10 figures net worth, I wouldn’t bother getting into the precious stones market as an investment or emergency store of wealth. I have six figures worth of gold in my nest egg and it all fits in a shoebox. I theoretically could convert the whole thing into a single tiny emerald or Ruby or something but I prefer the versatility of gold to having all of that savings in a single tiny rock that will literally lose all of its value if I accidentally scratch it or if it chips or shatters.

They are dogshit tier investment. The value of them is entirely artificial and in times of true scarcity which we will see return, I don't see people spending tens of thousands of dollars on rings and jewelry as often as you do today.

Most anons have it right. Diamonds are not a solid store of value. I have a bag of gems removed from jewelry I've refined. They're almost worthless.

Agreed for the most part, especially with regards to jewelry, but do see:

True “investment grade” gems are genuinely rare. But We’re only talking about the most brilliant, flawless, perfect stones; the 0.00001% or even less. Investment grade gems will retain their value the same way that gold will. But the problem here, as I said is, unless you’re worth at least 9 or 10 figures, there isn’t any logical reason to even bother getting into that market.
If I was worth $100,000,000 I would probably buy $5,000,000 worth of flawless rubies or sapphires or emeralds because they would be small enough that if SHTF I could smuggle all $5,000,000 worth of them up my ass while I flee to a safer place and arrive there and still be set for life. But I’m not worth that much.

I found a pewter antique, searching the marking said it was from mid 1800s. Is this stuff worth the buy? I didn't get it, but hid it behind something for if I changed my mind. it was $5

Diamonds are a scam for the most part. (((Debeers))) And the other diamond cartels figured out how to market them and keep the market locked down.
Yes huge flawless diamonds will always have a value But diamond pricing is so subjective that it cant be trusted.
Pms have a set spot price based on their purity so its easy to make them liquid no matter where you are in the world.

I'd probably buy it, not sure how big it is but tin is worth about $25/kg right now so for $5 you probably wouldn't lose. The patina doesn't really look 19th century but maybe it was carefully stored or something.

If you’re in investment grade gems, then it means you know. Unless you’re a fucking retard. Obviously like with any investment you have to know what you’re doing. Everyone in /pmg/ who isn’t new knows not to buy overpriced gimmicky gold and silver shit, I would hope, for example.
Naturally the gem market is more complicated but if you’re going in to a market with $5,000,000 I would assume anyone would do their research first.
