I know I need to move even within the UK but it's so demoralising. I had such love for England and Britain as a child when I immersed myself in history and literature. I was and am proud to be an Anglo Saxon but the economic reality of this hellhole is painful.
I plan to scrape together enough to go to university and get a degree then flee to anywhere and never pay a penny back to the cretinous boomers who enjoyed it for free but now charge for it because they opened the institution to everyone and made it unsustainable.

Those are shit. Seriously. They're only really useful for temporarily drying the odd drawer or cupboard out.

You need an actual dehumidifier and to try to stop more moisture being generated / coming in.

Warm air carries more moisture than cold air. And it always rises.

Other than that, yeah..... it's lol. I just moved to Wales a few months ago around Chester. Fixing the house up. Neeting on savings. I bet the next year to ten is going to bring some fun. Hopefully there'll be a giant violent riot or three. But not here.

Properly fitted single glazing can beat shitly fitted double. But a nice temporary trick is just to go on ebay, search for mylar blanket or emergency blanket, price lowest to highest. Buy. I'm just going day by day not until something snaps. The future of the UK is very bleak, we're not doing anything to address the problems we have and they keep getting worse, if anything we're accelerating the issues by bad government policies. Bitcoin is the only hope we have to end the madness worldwide because as long as central banking and seigniorage exists we'll always have the same problems which incrementally get worse after each round of QE.

You should invest in a dessicant dehumidifier and take it with you wherever you move to in uk. They work well at low temperatures and will also heat the room. I did my research on them and bought a Meaco DD8L a few years ago. They us 330W on the low setting but they heat the room as they dehumidify and the dry air feels warmer anyway. They will sort out the mildew issue too but get rid of what you have with the vinegar etc.
The electric fleece throws are great but you don't need a huge one, a single one will do and use it on low setting.
These stories will become more common, i feel, unfotunately. Make sure you buy Chainlink and don't fucking sell it, too. You can break out of this thing one day. Don't lose sight of it. Good luck anon,

Grim.

It sounds like you have the means to improve at least some of those circumstances. Start getting rid of the mold, that stuff is terrible for your health and it doesn't much in $ or effort to atleast subdue it with bleach.

Find out why it's so humid, and if you need to, buy a dehumidifier.

As for heating, it's not fun having a cold home but remember that's how people have lived for 10,000s of years. Layer up, use hot water bottles in your bed, cook hot stews, etc.

As for money, start making a plan for what you actually want to be doing. You sound smart, youve been able to evaluate your circumstances, now focus on improving them. I went to university late and got my computer science degree when I was 24. Now Im in the top 5% of income earners making 150k a year. Make a plan and execute it. Also it may turn out that the UK is not the best place for your plan. In Australia the minimum wage is like 15£ and that's for chill hospitality work. Normal salary here is 70k aud

The Age of Abundance is over.

You lived through the age of opportunity. A type of golden age if you will.
In no previous time period could a man jump from the bottom to the top with such great ease.

In the east communism kept people in strict order. Growing up the hierarchy truly did require exception skills even if oftentimes social ones. The communist block would see a brief glimpse of opportunity for 2 generations, yet it would also be plagued by western elites abusing the falling system for their gains.
In the south the african ways have never changed. Innovation is shunned and crushed by a violent K-selected collective. Reproduce fast, die young, even if external factors don't demand it their genes will drive them to idiocy.
In the islamic world a more orderly vioence remains but growth up the heirarchy is still mostly hereditary or limited to truly exceptional individuals.
In the far east with rare exceptions the asian blood demands obedience and high creatity necessary for exceptional jump up the social hierarchy is rare. Perhaps Japan and South Korea being the exception.

All of these people have some sort of reason to claim the conditions brought them down.
But you who lived in the West, you can truly say "we experienced an unprecedented age of growth and abundance of opportunities"

That time is coming to an end. Years of recession are coming. Some say years of high inflation will come with them, others claim deflation will hit assets.
Either way there will be less opportunity, savings will be hit, taxes will rise, supplies of everything that was in abundance before will be limited if available at all. There will be less jobs and some fields, now deemed perspective will become obsolete.

It's going okay, I joined the Navy two years ago so at least I have my own little room with an en suite and I can keep it nice and warm for £0. The whole thing is like £75 a month.
I go into work and it's comfy banter, the only downsides are that I live in what's essentially a car park with not much around it, hundreds of miles from my home.
Still, not bad compared to someone joining the US military though, I really wouldn't have guessed it to be this relaxed when I joined.
I feel awful for the country as a whole, it'll be a painful period of strikes and recession. The money is there but the powers that be would rather gum up the whole system than give up a few % in return for long term health. Many such cases

I have a fairly new and extremely well insulated house, triple glazed etc, so it's rarely getting below 13c.
I do have issues with mildew / mould / condensation though.

To rectify, I've started to squeegie my bedroom window in the morning, and use a cloth to get rid of any moisture. Theres a fucking lot.
I also got a dehumidifier for about £80. Its 80W so about 60p per 24 hours to run. It seems to be collecting 300ml of water a day, in addition to the probably 200ml I scrape off the windows.

I have a humidity meter that was previously always at 80-90%, but now sits 55-65%, which I think is OK to prevent mould growth.

For areas with mould already, I used the B&M mould and mildew blaster which works wonders, and got this bleach gel stuff for window seals / bathroom seals, which is fucking incredible at removing black bits.

I've been in your position mate and its fucking shite, hope this helps.

It does indeed. You should blast the mould down and give it good hoover before and after you start the dehumidifier up because as everything dries out it encourages dust and spores to go airborne easier.

>These stories will become more common, i feel, unfotunately
I was actually expecting there to be a jumper and electric blanket crisis by winter all the way back in spring. There's still time.

It's only a matter of time before the "ever considered a spin dryer?" articles appear. I got made in Germany Thomas one from ebay for £160. They don't get the clothes totally dry but they use about 200 times less electricity than a standard vented dryer. And it's maximum satisfaction watching it guzzle up a big load like a dirty slag and then squeeze all the juice out. Take about 1-2 minutes.

You need a heat recovery unit to ventilate the building. They're no where near as expensive as a heat pump and actually do some ventilating. They also get more efficient the more cold it gets outside. Couple of hundred quid. They can either be easy or a bit of a bastard to fit depending on the layout and type of house. E.g. mine has 0.5m thick stone walls. Putting a 15cm core bit through that takes.... "a little while". As in, about 5-6 hours not counting the drill rebuild time because I've finally managed to cause the clutch to go into meltdown. But if it's standard two layer brick, that can be way easier.

Electricity is inherently much more expensive than gas because the station looses 50% or so of the energy during the conversion process regardless of the fuel type due to the manner in which the steam turbine recover it from the steam. okay here's some solutions. Quilts. Nail them over the windows or invest in some decent hooks so you can take them off the window at night. Goodwill sells used ones. Dollar tree has food for a follar. Name brands now. Try boiling a pot of eucalyptus water every now and then. Cleans sinuses and has disinfectant properties. Literally buy all purpose cleaners and disenfectants from dollar tree as well. Spray the mold for gd sake. Can't afford laundry? Wash the gd laundry. Add vinegar or bleach if its whites. At least that might help a little.

Computer science.
Essentially I made a mistake on my part being an art grad with nothing much going on for me in terms of the salary and competition but what really put me off was just the networking and socialization aspects, the people who work in the entertainment industry to simply put it live in a different world.
Between my bachelors and masters I did zero hour works because that was the only thing willing to hire me for about £40 a week, then I had to quit for a contract position that was hiring for min wage at a full time rate with promises to make me permanent. I ended up figuring that was a lie after asking the manager about it since I was cranking up a lot of things compared to other employees who'd just read books in their offices most of the time, I simply stopped putting much effort over the job. After that I worked for charities in my local town because that was the only place that responded to me. I then got a random call for a place to work full time and did so for about a year but it was a dead end job so I essentially saved up and had to either pick to pay for a masters or do a trades course + driving classes. I chose to do masters in a way denounce my bachelors and in a way to prove I'm not a brainlet. Didn't know it involved this level of torture however.

You're vastly underestimating the farming capacity of the planet. Even the UK can pull in way more than it has been of late. They closed tons of the fisheries and the farms and past it to euro land in exchange for most of the money generation being in the banks in London. If you venture far enough outside the cities and towns, 95% of the country, literally, is just open space.

There's also quorn. They had precisely the same idea in the 70s when they thought the world would run out of meat in a decade. Quorn is actually quite nice when you cook it following the instructions. It can also be produced at astronomical rates by comparison with other things.

Also inbetween waiting for graduation and finding a job I tried to apply for a local movie theater because the guy at the local Cex looked absolutely knackered with a weird eyepatch and mad max teir getup and the theatre seemed peaceful for the most of it. However they completely lied about the duties and the hours from their posting and basically told me I'll be cleaning toilets till 3 at night or something ridiculous while everyone else just serves popcorn or does the normal things. When I asked if I could work flexibly the interview guy just kissed his teeth at me and they basically rejected me.
To be honest I never seem to land a normal job despite trying in good will. I believe I was rejected from fast food places about 6-8 times, charity shops about 3-4 times, grocery stores about 3 times, these just being the ones that replied to me. Also one time I applied for a computer repair shop which seemed to only want a guy to print out receipts and the guy read my cv and ripped it infront of me saying I wasn't qualified for that. Though these I'm willing to put behind and keep trying.

My rent is significantly higher than those who share a flat with friends. That's just the reality of living in a city today, you need friends or family to share costs. And your boomer parents are blind to this reality and think you can make it on your own in 2022, what with inflation and mass immigration. To add on to what anon is saying, if you have the skills to work remote, move out and start off somewhere on your own terms.

Are UK citizens still allowed within schengen? If so Hungary has a nice 15% personal income tax rate, or Spain has a comparable tax rate to the UK but way better climate

You would have to get out from under the UK's thumb tax-wise, so you'd have to read up. Starting point:
https://taxsummaries.pwc.com/united-kingdom/individual/residence

You'd be good for Spain since there's a double taxation treaty
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/spain-tax-treaties

You'd probably be taxed by the UK for any leftovers if you pay lower tax in Hungary, at least until you manage to cut ties with the UK properly

Barely anyone has air conditioning because it's difficult to fit with load bearing brick walls in place so there's a lack of air movement, dehumidification and filtration options. Just heating a room does not stop mould. Moisture is what causes mold growth. What is needed is ventilation or a dehumidifier. Most British properties particularly slums have poor ventilation if any. Heating a room just makes the air hold more moisture so surfaces are relatively more dry but if there is nowhere for it to go then the damp problem is not solved in anything other than the short term especially if you need to dry your clothes indoors because you don't have a dryer or anywhere outside to do it. Cracking a window and pointing a fan outside would be more effective at combating mold than just intermittently warming it up.

No, but it does reduce condensation, and mould requires liquid phase water to grow. Which will be absorbed into the wall paper etc when people crank the thermostat way down. UK houses are already leaky as fuck. Water vapour will find it's way out, along with lots of heat, if it's heated, because it's at a pressure above ambient external. The ultimate answer is, fit insulation and heat recovery ventilation unit. You'd have to be full tard to not do this given the coming decade or two of energy bill rinsing now underway.

I see you not only don't get gcse level physics but also aren't too good with reading. Read what it says at the top. One word at a time. Ask an adult to help with the big ones.

Real people also use rocket mass heaters for home heating. Don't be smug about being a freezing ignoramus clinging to obsolescent tech. A rocket stove gets high airflow and a secondary burn. Higher temperatures, more fuel-efficient, less polluting, less need for perfect fuel. No reason not to use one.

Just put the wood near the stove so it dries out quicker. It's not magic right. California is on fire on a yearly basis.
