I see this, but I don't understand their logic. The next wave of oil gains is months away. Right now we're seeing that EU has chosen to shut down rather than pay up. US likely heading towards it's own shutdown/stagnation next year. OPEC has rejected the idea of adding cuts to maintain price pressure. Chinese demand won't jump 3mm bpd overnight. SPR refill is a false hope, and even the theoretical floor it provides is being set at a price point that offers zero profit to producers, especially after accounting for recent drilling cost inflation.

You've got equities that had been sold down continuously for over 2 years straight to the point where some names were, and still are, trading at a negative EVs (below net-cash). The rebound has barely even begun. Somehow, rather than jump on this obvious gains train, oilfags seem compelled to continue chasing the biggest YTD winners right as the US and the rest of the globe head into a recession.

Stocks are up 50%, in a general equities market that's down around 20%. Most people here trade the stocks, not the commodity futures directly.

If you're buying WTI and/or brent futures, and specifically contracts that trade next summer, then fine. That's not really going against what I was saying in my original post. Between the massive SPR unload and the EU slowdown, there was a big overestimation of how bad the shortfall would be this winter. That's what's getting priced in right now. I think it's highly unlikely WTI will trade below $70 next summer. That doesn't mean I wanna rush out and buy right now, today. There's an order to these things, a sequence. You're jumping the gun.

SPR is just excess crude oil purchased decades ago before the shale innovation happened. At this point, the best usage is to smooth out our own short term supply/demand issues, as they've done successfully this past year.
It's a legacy tool that's outlived it's purpose.
