This is part of why I cannot stand people who have this big fantasy of the world unraveling and collapsing.

People will live through it, spend their entire lives in the deepest pits of that collapse and not even realize anything was collapsing. It will be called a "decline" or a "recessive period" until one day people are more concerned with building new stuff than maintaining the old decrepit stuff. It won't be considered a collapse until centuries after it's over and done with.
