They return a share, the owner sells it as the Broker only returned the share to their general pool, a short seller rebuys the same share, and then once again returns it, rinse and repeat. 1. You lend one share and sell it. Your lended share is now marked as "short". Even if it is mismarked in books, intentionally or not, the circumstance of one lent share being sold creates a short. Because: merely selling a share does not create an identical, additional share.
2. To draw out this circumstance in time, you need to locate one "share" marked as long. This can be fucked with, as weve seen, i.e. deep ITM puts counting as actual shares. Sure. What cannot be fucked with is covering; the instance where the share marked "short" is marked "long" happens as one _share_ marked long is not merely located, but actually provided.
3. Closing, e.g. 100 shares marked short, then requires a corresponding number of shares marked long. Is this hard?


If positions would just dissapear, we would not be here. They dont. Hedgies are not going through these inconveniences, like the swap rollovers, because they think its fun you know. If they could get outta jail by playing pingpong with a set of 10 GME longs, maybe they would have wanted to save themselves some trouble, and have done that by now. But here we are. The bizarre deep OTM puts, the brazilian swaps, 100+ consequent days of 60% short volume, sometimes towards 75%, all of it, is done precisely because they cannot get out by anything less than retail leaving.
