52683621 No.52683621 [Reply] [Original]

It's been about a year and a half and still no ads on the search engine, while it has had massive growth. What impact will this have on BAT? What will it look like when they finally use their cash cow?
Now I know we aren't late since its never really had a huge pump. But will search finally be the thing that effects BAT?

Also are rewards ever going completely on chain or will we always be stuck with vBAT.

To increase my odds of summoning the master I would like to say a few words. Javascript, Brandon Eich, mask mandate, Corona virus.

Search ads could be "the" catalyst for BAT to moon. Once those come out the ad volume will pick up considerably, and put Brave on the path to profitability. Once brave is profitable they will increase the team and development. Meanwhile BAT will be going up from being attached to search ads as. As BAT goes up, it will get more fanboys and shills and Brave will become more popular, leading to more profitability, more development, etc. It should be a nice upward cycle once it gets moving. Something that could make you seriously rich if you have enough patience to hold for a while and not dump for a 10x.

The other option is just complete failure to launch and they go bankrupt. I'd say 20% possibility of that. 80% of scenario A.

>> No.52685422

>> No.52685602

>>52685422
They have over 100 employees and each is probably making 100k salary on average. Total operating expenses maybe $20m just pulling that out of my ass. I saw them dump about 20 mil worth of BAT from team lockup wallet on the day they announced the release of brave search so that will get them somewhere. They still have some BAT left if they need to dump more to stay afloat. They certainly don't have much revenue coming in right now, that's for sure.

There's always a chance of bankruptcy. If crypto gets hit even harder and the rest of their BAT is worth shit and they run out of money and can't get search ads off the ground, then it's gg.

>>52685602
>the rest of their BAT is worth shit and they run out of money
Forgive me if I misunderstand the situation, but Brave doesn't necessarily need BAT to be worth much for their business to operate, right? What they're selling is advertisements, and the dollar amount they charge for that doesn't change because of BAT's price-- it's just that they need to purchase some amount of BAT as compensation to the users for their monthly cut. If anything, it's better for them in the short-term that they get to market-buy BAT for cheap, assuming the users' payout isn't linearly commensurate to BAT's value; Brave would actually be able to save a little money in that case.
Also:
1. Brave, unlike Sirgay or whoever, doesn't regularly sell off big chunks of their BAT vault to keep the lights on.
2. Their jobs page has five openings on it right now. At times it's had over a dozen. They've never stopped hiring, and I can't imagine they have particularly greater turnover rates than any other techy place.
This is all to say I've never seen reason to believe Brave is in dire financial straits. God knows they don't blow their whole wad on hype and brand promotion.

>> No.52686683

>>52685863
I believe you are correct. The price of BAT doesn't exactly matter to Brave as a company. I suppose it could help market Brave/BAT but I think that's about the extent of it.

IIRC I remember about a year or year and a half ago about Brendan saying they were near profitability. So I can't imagine things have gone too far downhill seeing as we can still see their ad buys. They did trim some of the fat from their marketing budget so I'm assuming they're being prudent. And with the talk of "growth hacking" etc... they probably don't have too many expenses other than employee wages.

I also remember earlier this year Brendan said they would probably do another round of funding I think he said later this year. So maybe that has already happened?

I really doubt Brave would go bankrupt, IMO they still have room morally bankrupt (tracker ads etc) before they actually are bankrupt.

I don't think Brave is too strapped financially. They have been playing extremely conservative which means safer but slower growth. The opposite end of the spectrum is something like Crypto.com or coinbase who has played too aggressive. That $1b+ coinbase nft product or the crypto.com ad spend has come back to haunt them. Brave knows their burn rate and hasn't taken any risky bets other than the search engine acquisition which looks like it might be a massive boon. They are in a position to where if they were hurting for money then they could probably raise it easily. They mainly just pay for employees that are mostly all remote, a small office, and server architecture.

I think they make about $3.5-4m in ad sales per year so far. Then they make probably another $500k off of tips / auto contribute. They also have the VPN and Brave talk which is probably another $1m. Their DEX also brings in about $50k. Lastly there are the widgets, exchanges and payment systems. These include the cards, the processors inside the wallet, and likely a deal with uphold and gemini where they might get a cut for each user that signs up. This is probably close to $3-5m

This is $11m on the high end to $8m on the low end if I had to guess. Brave is probably in the red like $5-10m per year with new products that should hopefully be launching soon. Search ads look like they could be projected to fill a $30m hole a year or two after launch. From there they have to iron out the kinks and scale. Once they hit profitability they can go to the bank and ask for a $50m loan and take some big bets. I wouldn't say that brave is in financial trouble, but I would say that they are just floating along. They cant afford to be risky and if they slow down the business goes bust.

The difficulty in the search ads is that they need a system that allows the advertiser to bid on keywords. In this example ledger bids on the keyword crypto or cold storage or hardware wallet and likely negative key words like tax or accounting. Then once you click on that ad brave and ledger need to know who it was clicked by, when, and how long they stayed or if they bought a ledger all without any details of the customer.

Its a pretty big thing to build as simple as it looks. The next phase is to tie in the self serve platform and search rewards. In the meantime they have to tweak the beta and start onboarding more advertisers. What im really curious about is what is going to constitute a reward? Do you get BAT just for making the search? Do you get BAT for clicking on the ad? Do you get both? Is it rate capped?

They are probably going to have to do a good deal of fraud prevention so im imagining the rewards might take several months if not longer. I used to game bing rewards and im pretty sure brave is aware of fraud at this point.
