So how do market makers actually influence the price. Retail isn't smart nor rich enough to break through sell or buy walls.

Market makers compete against each other to get better prices and are constantly holding billions of the security, so they dont really scale in or out entirely, they're just scalping. Why would they allow the market to go to such extreme discounts and over priced levels?

Understanding market makers is probably they key to a successful trader, but I just can't get it.

Most railroads have their employees on a points system which means if you miss more than like one or two days (especially if they're high impact days like superbowl sunday or leading up to the holidays) you get fired. Now that’s what they say. They could easily be just saying that and buying the dips but they are not in cash. Most of them are still holding net longs. Even those that may still be net short still hold large long positions.

Once you are trading millions or billions in a portfolio you do not just close positions. You scale in and out of them. Maybe you were long 500,000 shares of apple going into the year and sold it down to 250,000 shares while putting that capital into whatever else. Let’s say short QQQ with shares and long puts. You are net long apple still but net short the market on balance of deltas and vol exposure. Then a day like today comes and you cover half your QQQ short and throw it in more puts. Your delta decreased to net long but your short gamma and vol exposure increased so if and when we go down your short deltas increase as the gamma ramps and your long vol kicks it up to hedge the long deltas.


This is how real trading goes. In real trading you win no matter what happens by moving your deltas gamma theta and vegas and keeping them in a hedged state whereas you make money no matter what happens so long as things keep trading.
