It's not all that bad, if you're reasonable and hedge yourself. For example, if you look at the breakevens on an ATM straddle you can see where the market has priced in price movement/volatility by that strike date. Just set your short strikes just beyond that and you should be fine, especially if there is a wall of options.
Not a guarantee of course, but like I said this is generally safe. Until it's not. That's options, baby!
