lmao, waaay back in the day i heard a story of someone who did this, from an insurance adjustor friend of mine. this dude had moved all his shit in, rigged up some electricity from a plug in the hallway and just daisychained extension cables to run all his stuff.
one day while he was at work the dodgy electrics caught fire and burnt the building down.
i'd imagine that's a pretty big reason, lol

But you wouldn't be allowed to use the electricity regardless, that's not what you're renting
What you are renting is a space where you can store anything you want, and also access at any time of the day for however long you want to
In theory you could sit around in the unit all day just fine, but the second you sleep it's some whole different thing, the distinction seems arbitrary ultimately

When I was homeless and living out of my car (for like a week so take this with a grain of salt), I would use gym membership trials to shower for free, and sleep at the highway rest stops that truckers frequented (because with that kind of traffic they were relatively safe). I saw other people doing the same thing. I'd also throw in a cheap AirBnB for a night every week or so, so that you can sleep in a real bed and shower leisurely regularly.

I'm with you up to this point. Be real, man, you know that capacity for self-sufficiency has an arbitrary (or at least unintuitive) relationship with actual access to basic needs in this country. There are total morons living in McMansions and actual geniuses/survivalists carrying all their worldly possessions in shopping carts. I can't pour a slab, construct a simple steel framed + steel cladded barn and live in it (alone) in Australia for many various reasons. One such example (even if sewage is connected) is that a toilet must be in an enclosed room. There are also laws about kitchens. Even if I live by myself. Its retarded.
>its to stop landlords cost cutting on rentals
Perhaps, but the rental law could have this and not building your own shack you have no intention to rent
>people might buy it in future
Well they can see what it has, its condition, etc. If they don't want a steel box with a bbq and a toilet without walls then don't buy it.

I'll never understand communities that build new apartments for "affordable housing" purposes, but its always just 2-3 bedroom units that take up a ridiculous amount of space.

They could easily make each unit be 1b/1b and then focus the extra space on better amenities such as balconies, larger gyms/pools ect.

You can't tell me these big complexes couldn't make money if they had 500 units for 750 a month.

A few years ago I started my own business, a martial arts dojo. I rented a warehouse with a mezzanine office and had sprung mat flooring in the warehouse space. I rigged up an entrance with timber that would keep out insects and unwanted people.

There was a shower, toilet and sink in the warehouse area. At night I would close the dojo, have dinner in the office then shower and sleep in a bed I set up in the office. In the morning, I'd wake up, shower, have breakfast and do some chores before the first students arrived. I did this day in and day out for about a year. It was a very comfortable existence and I had my own dojo and gym 24/7.

I didn't have a kitchen unfortunately, so I ate mostly rice, pickled vegetables, fruit and nuts. I did have a fridge though.

Business folded due to termite infestation which ate away everything I built. Insurance didn't cover it and I couldn't afford a refit. I gave up trying to teach martial arts as a business after that.

There are tiny homes like this, they cost like 150$/month. But ultimately you have to understand that the system can only function if people need to wageslave to have a roof over their head. This is due to all the land being owned by someone. All land is already owned either by private entities or the state. Allowing anyone to live in a shed anywhere is an anarchist concept and no state allows that. That's why cops regularly destroy anarchists camps in europe. In the usa there are communities living in the middle of nowhere, for free. The state just turns a blind eye and would never allow it on a mass scale

Im sure you could get away with it for at least a few months before someone snitches. The question is, why? As anons have mentioned, you're better off living in your car/van. At least then you have mobility and can shit/piss outside.

Also the reason you arent allowed is due to zoning laws. I looked in to buying a cheap warehouse space and converting it in to a living space a few years ago and it's near impossible to do legally. Im sure if you did it you'd get away with it for a few years at least but eventually someone would snitch or some authority would catch on.

desu nothing was more comfy than to sleep in my SUV outside of an Anytime Fitness. Need to piss? go inside. Need to shit? go inside. Need to shower? go inside. Need free wifi? go inside. ALL of your electrical needs are satisfied as long as you don't make yourself too obvious - use the public library for infinite knowledge, wifi, and electronics charging. Park close enough to the gym for night-time wifi. Eat 1/2 a rotisserie chicken for dinner, the other 1/2 for breakfast. Chow down on bags of fruit, like apples or mandarin oranges, eat your multi-vitamins, enjoy the fresh veg that they sell that comes pre-washed in a bag. Treat yourself every once in a while to some value meal stuff if you're craving something hot. Buy a couple $50 wool blankets - they helped me get through ridiculously cold nights and I was snug with only my nose outside of them. rent a PO box at your local post office. Camp fucking anywhere - you don't even need to pack! Enjoy snug solitude and independence. Park near other vehicle-dwellers and enjoy like-minded company and the knowledge that there are others looking out for you as well.
I'd still do it if I wasn't married. It's nicer having somebody that loves you, but tbqhwy, living in my car was definitely better than living in a room in a house. you will save INCREDIBLE dough. Pod living on your own terms makes sense when you're very young. Obviously as you start to get more financially set up you'll want to get a nice place, but when you're young and crazy and healthy, why not? fuck, everywhere I drive I see cars and think, "i could live in that" and I get little flashbacks to being sooooo fucking snug in my multiple layers of wool and all my stuff surrounding me while I get a nice, cool rest.

Apartment buildings usually have a varation of apartment sizes, since only small apartments would lead to a lot of space being taken up by hallways. When you mention it though, all the new projects in my home town seem to have pic rel as the smallest option

Hell your better off just living in an R.V. Least with the R.V you can drive it. For laundry just hit up one of those coin op places. Get a cheap ass piece of land with a barn on it or with some structure that has electric/water and your golden.

You can't actually do this anymore. Storage unit businesses have caught on and they do everything they can to prevent squatting now. The only way you can pull this off is if the storage unit is completely unstaffed or you have a friend working the place.

What's even the point? I have a storage unit and per square foot the rent is basically the same as my apartment, which is wired for electricity, has heating and cooling, running water, etc. Just get a dinky ass studio in the same area, I guarantee it isn't going to be that much more expensive than what you'd be paying for a storage unit but far more livable.

I managed a storage facility for a few months, the company I worked for was constantly expanding and building new properties. These things are built the absolute cheapest way possible, including the labor that puts them up. Electricity is rigged up by some late 20's-mid 30's construction grug running on his 5th Monster Ultra cause he's worked 50 hours this week already and it's only Thursday. We constantly had to have repair crews come in to fix wiring, repair damages from windy weather, etc. Poisonous ass bugs LOVE getting into these things to in the outdoor units. You're better off buying a pre-built shed from Home Depot and setting it up on a cheap plot of land somewhere.

There's so many legalities involved with these contracts and agents are encouraged to basically just get you to sign after stating the basic rules. Most places will just have access codes stop working after a certain time and someone watching live video to keep people from living in them.

>> No.52629443

>>52606078
These things get hot and it's easy to suffocate. Since it's not rated for human habitation, it means the company is liable if you die in there.

I was just in the pacific northwest and they have these indoor climate controlled """storage facilities"""" all over the place.
I think they are basically intended to function as living units for homeless people but it's supposed to be hush-hush because the government acknowledging this as a solution would be a scandal.
