If you have a card which has bonuses for spending at grocery stores, you can buy gift cards there to get the bonus for other stores as well.
Tbh it's not that much, but if you get 4% back, then that's more money than the interchange fee, so you can be happy that the bankman is losing money each time you make a purchase.

I'm basically an autistic hermit who shuns finance but I recently had to go on a business trip and almost wasn't able to get into my hotel because I didn't have a credit card and didn't have enough in my bank account to cover it.
My manager had to call the hotel and plead with them to accept his card over the phone since they usually require to see the card in person.

I just have a credit card through my bank and I get constantly scolded by the tellers for not carrying a balance. They always try to upsell me about all the "perks" of the "points" I can get for going into credit card debt but I always tell them to miss me with their debt slave rebates. Its always funny to see them quietly seethe when I turn them down because I just know Im making them miss their corporate quota and they wont be getting a pizza party or something because of me lol.

Now I dont even use my credit card anymore and I just pull out each pay check fully in cash so that the bank has none of my money to "bail in" with when they fail. Fuck banks lol.

dont use the card as a loan instead a replacement for carying cash. lets say you spent $50 a week on lunch if you eat out every day for lunch. Instead of paying with your debit card, pay with credit card, and every friday, pay the bill. now you get the rewards that you wouldnt have got if you paid with your debit. I have a card that has high reward for gas, one for grocery stores and another for online purchases. also in the event that someone gets your card information they dont have direct access to your bank account.

the biggest thing is never use credit cards as loans, which most people seem to do.

Churning bonuses and chasing rewards points is for poors. If you're really incentivized to risk getting into high-interest debt just you can save $100 bucks on plane tickets or get $30 a month back in rewards, you should look into how to make more money not how to get more debt

>I don't want to have like tens of thousands of dollars laying around my house and then it burns down or something.

True, this is why you get fire resistant lock boxes, bury things unnaground in water resistant containers, or convert the cash into more fire resistant assets like gold, silver, or land.

I have found that putting cash into air tight mason jars with moisture absorbers (you need moisture absorbers because the cotton paper cash is made from attracts and holds moisture and will mold when sealed in a container unless you draw the moisture out and hold it with silica packets) and then putting the jar into a fire safe (with at least a 1200 degree fire rating for half an hour) works good. Of course gold and silver have a 1500+ degree melting points to start with, so putting them in a firesafe with a 1200 degree rating, plus the fact that gold does not rust or tarnish, makes them virtually indestructible to fire or water. An entry level fire resistant lock box will go for around $30. Remember, the whole point of these lock boxes is fire resistence, not security, so be sure to hide the box somewhere as they are easy to break open or carry away.

Also remember to diversify not just what assets you hold but where you hold them as well. Like you said you dont want to lose it all in a house fire (or an IRS raid).

If you get a $300 SUB for the couple hours it takes to sign up for a card and then cancel it after making purchases you would have anyway, that's like $150/hr. Obviously not going to replace a real income, but it's a good return for the minimal time invested. Best part too is it's tax free, if you have to spend money to get the bonus, it's a rebate according to the IRS, not income.

Of course the trap you have to avoid is spending more than you otherwise would just to get a SUB, which obviously defeats the point.

Between credit cards, browser cash back extensions, receipt scanning apps, apps that provide cash back for gas, etc. I probably get a couple thousand dollars in CB a year. Not life changing amounts of money, but it's a nice side hustle and money that I wouldn't have in my pocket otherwise.

I have a Capital One and a Discover card, 20.5k credit limit between the two. $0 annual fees on both. I have all my bills go to the Discover while I use the Capital One for daily shit. I never pay things off in full so there is always something on the report to say I'm using the cards.
