I mostly agree, with the following caveats:
> if you want to marry, that you already have a partner with the same goals as you
> you and your partner can work remotely
> once your children are of-age, you send them to boarding school
Otherwise, fuck no. Living in the country is hellish and only for poorfags or vacations.

what are maintenance and utility costs. are you a fucking moron. who the fuck wants to pay the upkeep on an 8 room house built in the 1800s? you realize there's a reason why the huge estates, like the biltmore for example, were all turned into museums? it's not economical to run huge estates in this day and age. big houses and estates used to be viable because of essentially slave labor - whether the 'help' were real slaves or not - and it's not a thing anymore. enjoy your landscape, heating, renovation, property taxes, furniture, cleaning, windows, dealing with historic societies and hoas, etc. into eternity.

>> No.52541838

Can confirm, NY State is paying ~$6.50 per gallon of heating oil and a small home uses 150gal per month this winter. Those bigger ones (3000sqft) are going to cost $2000 in heating alone. A lot of people are dumping their houses or going under water because of FUCKING RUSSIA

nothing crazy. Especially if it's like 3k square feet. Thats the size of the average new build. And everything in new England is old. An old house is nothing special. And who fuck pays for landscaping, house cleaning and windows. I don't. And since when is 3k square feet unmanageably big. This is what big looks like.

Most of these areas have no jobs except for those highly skilled. Unless you can work remotely more than likely you are not in that category and they have no need for your job.
And even if you are in demand and the economy magically remains robust. What about your kids? They will have to deal with the average person in the area. Simple fact is out side of a few very expensive cities America is complete garbage.
The plan for any sane person is to save money, get some sort of passive income or at the very least take social security at retirement and leave the country. Why live in some frozen hell hole like Maine, rustbelt or swealtering southern parts, just to live in the middle of nowhere?

And? The school district ranks 128th out of 136th in Maine, more than half the kids in the district are on food stamps, the median household income is 40k, less than 1 in 3 have a college degree. There's 18k people in the city so your opportunities are extremely limited. If you want to live in Maine then go to the Portland area where there are jobs that pay more than 40-50k/year. This house wouldn't be 190k in Falmouth or Cumberland.

You might as well purchase a barn.
It will have NOTHING of modern comforts: no central air, no built in wiring, the bathrooms are
outhouses built into the home, no insulation, the floors are most likely NOT flat, the roof and basement probably need work.

Not my house but a similar one on the market.

When I cashed out I bought a 3 unit multifamily in a pretty nice neighborhood, close to this one.

Currently I'm in the basement unit, which is fine because that's all the space I need and the other two units cover my mortgage, and because the basement isn't legally cleared to rent yet. So I just live in it. Two really nice couples rent the first and second floors and I've never had an issue collecting rent which is great. The goal is to earn enough to duplex down the basement and first floor unit and live there as long as I want while the top floor unit pays my mortgage.
