Evaluating future growth is much harder than looking at past. In fact, quite often looking at past performance can lead to bad predictions.
Once again, you're trying to predict >>>future<<< growth. History of given company can give you some insight on the management, checking their IR materials can provide information on what's their plan for growth, and current cash flow can help predict if those plans have a chance of materialising.
There is even more than that though, if given company is included in popular ETF, then people might invest in it indirectly, without fully being aware of that fact.
In the end, people try to experiment and find their own way to beat the market. Sometimes they overdiversify and start buying bad shit for the sake of having a stake in different industries. Psychology plays important role in investing and well, lots of people are bad at being self-concious.
