But there's still uncontrollable randomness in cryptokitties because the offspring depends on the time it is birthed, and people are incentivized to birth your pregnant kitties immediately due to the reward (the full breeding fee you paid ahead of time) being paid to whoever does it for you.

Right now it is the definition of a ponzi. Just instead of individual referrals we share the referrals across each type of pokemon we invest in. When they add battling and trading and shit to actually do with these mons, it might become something more. But if you compare the contracts of both games you can see that a fuckton more work went into cryptokitties than this, not to mention all the original art made for every single trait while in this game literally none of the content (names, pictures, descriptions) in the handful of mons made so far are original.

But "amount of work" is an unfair comparison because this is extremely early compared to cryptokitties. This has a ton of room to grow. We're in early as fuck. The long-term future all depends on how well balanced the actual battle system is and what method we will have to trade and obtain mons outside of buying them directly from the contract.
