Currently really contemplating getting a sluice but I don’t yet understand them. (Of course I understand them, but not fully).
I.e. what’s the difference between a short one and a long one? Gut feeling says the longer the better, but I gotta be able to put it into a backpack. Those vortex sluices seem interesting. The one by xp detectors (pic related) is quite cheap and really light , but apparently you need to classify down to 4mm/ 1/8th of an inch to make it work and my river has (rarely, though…) stuff bigger than that. Plus, classifying gravel down to 4mm is a lot of work with multiple passes. Don’t want to classify more than with my garret one.

yep i build many of them, i have them stashed all over the place in my region and i sell them to people once in a while. If your looking for something light that doesnt need a pump to operate, the rocker is your best bet.

A rocker is more effective than a gold pan but limited in how much material it can process compared to a high banker. Their very good for low water areas like high benches away from easy access to water.

A long sluice (a long tom for example) is better at catching all your fine gold but generates more concentrates to work on. A shorter sluice will still catch gold but will have a higher chance at loosing gold. The longer the sluice the more area you have to catch gold.

So, 2nd smallest size for most commercial ones at minimum, with a good flare (?) in front. Not sure about those inspection rubber some have on them at the start.

a quick cheat you can use for the wedges is to go to a hardware store and buy premade wedges meant for shimming doors or windows into place, i ve used those many times now in other sluices to great effect.

And yes your exactly right, and that particular sluice doesnt look to bad either. Solid rubber matting is fine, it makes clean up a lot easier but you will need to carry a bucket or tub to wash the whole sluice in if the mat is built in. Most of my setups allow the matting to be pulled out or changed out for cleanup, but many of the German / Finnish sluice setups are built in mats. Both setups work fine either way.

The problem is that the value of gold is not something that makes sense in the modern era. We hold onto the idea of its value almost out of tradition, but it no longer makes sense. Before you might hold onto some gold and then during a time of poor economic downturn your by then adult children could take it to the market and buy some chickens and feed.

I think there is, and that's why I dumped 90% of my savings into PMs this year, while silver prices were low. Now they're already going back up.
It would have been a lot more fun to do this slowly over decades, but the world is rapidly changing. Just in the past couple years alone they printed more money than all the previous 100 years. We're in the final stages of this fake-out game where the Fed pretends to fight inflation, but they're more like a pilot who has lost control of his aircraft.
And none of my silver is for sale, unless I have to in order to survive. Some of it takes up a lot of room too, especially the 5-kilo coins. But they're not for sale! If anything they will be family gifts for special occasions.
