Take this January expiry on WMT for example.
You've got a wall of options (probably a fence spread) set by institutions at 150, 155, 160 strikes. Buying an ATM spread for WMT would have a breakeven of 160.05 on the long side.
So this means you could (relatively safely) sell a 160 or 165 call, barring some kind of big news event. You look at ERs and dividend calendars, and figure that there's nothing on the radar, so you write a call to degenerate gamblers that don't understand shit and make a $100 cut.

But you have to be careful, you're right until you're not, and depending on how greedy you are, you can get absolutely clobbered.

January 2023 can't get here soon enough. The urge to bag grows stronger.. What? Some people blow money on stamps, binge bagging stuff on e-bay (which ends up uh in the trash or in a yard sale),etc. Least I'm blowing my money for a good cause. Shares need homes after all..

Fence spreads are a defensive trade where you own the underlying and try to hedge against upwards or downwards movements. They're often used by big institutions and market makers to eliminate risk.
Another way to think of them is a covered call, but you've long puts and calls several strikes out to guard against movements.
Actually, I'm not sure what the best strikes are to use, but they'll often be sold ATM, and probably bought long at 1SD away from the current spot price. Remember, these guys have accumulated shares for years and years, so they're not paying current prices for their long position

You're right that options let you use leverage, but you should define "short term trade".
If the option has almost no theta left, you're basically flipping coins on leverage. Bad idea, but some people can make it work. If you expect the movement to occur in a short time, and you're buying a deep ITM contract with a lot of theta, that's a different story.

For example, I think HAS will continue to shit the bed over the next quarter. So I opened a long dated spread (2024 expiry) and will probably close it depending on how their MTG meme set plays out

Their earnings were good.
But I dunno, a number of anons are correct that they can't compete with TSMC on semiconducter size, and their balance sheet isn't the greatest. But TSMC is in Taiwan and Intel has supply chains that I'm pretty sure reach into China.

I think it sets the conditions for a squeeze. If the market is going down but the premiums are going down with it, then this means the market is going down steadily? And no rally has sustained long enough for the volatility to pick up so the VIX stays low as rallies get beaten down and the market heads lower where we're convinced it's all going, at least in the mid term, 6-12 months, which are most peoples' options contracts expiries?

It kind of sets things up for a rally if people are shorting shares as much as they're buying "sure thing" puts...

For me, it's Moderna. The best covid™ vaccine. I even ask for extra jabs and the Walgreens staff is so friendly and more than willing to oblige.

One time I asked for a Moderna jab and they gave me three. I said, "Wow, three for free!" and the nice friendly Walgreens pharmacist laughed and said, "I'm going to call you 3-for-free!".

Now the staff greets me with "hey it's 3-for-free!" and ALWAYS give me three jabs. It's such a fun and cool atmosphere at my local Walgreens pharmacy, I go there at least 3 times a week for jabs and pcr tests, 1-2 times for Pfizer on the weekends, and maybe once for JnJ when I'm in a rush but want to feel safe and show that I believe in the $cience!, it's fast, and can match my daily coof fearing needs.

I even jab my dog with science juice, it's safe! What a great pharmacy.

the only thing that matters is what happens next month at fomc. which is what has been driving the moves almost entirely. what happens with dx and 3m and 2y. we rallied recently on this notion that the fed has to eventually pause to assess or pivot. as time passes it becomes increasingly more dangerous to short but also the rewards could be substantial if the fed remains hawkish. we've seen just how violently the market can rally merely on the anticipation of pause/pivot rumor, when it actually happens bobo is going to be in a lot of trouble.
although its true fighting the fed and going against the current market narrative is foolish, going against the fact that conditions are more likely to improve suddenly is even worse. it is far more likely a sudden pricing out will occur like we saw last week and the rally will be violent. from a psychological standpoint market participants are extremely averse to negative news or potential negativity even is the real event (like covid) isnt that severe in actuality.
I grew up during the dotcom era and lived through 2008 and i can remember how severely my parents struggled through that time, it was really bad. things today are not as bad as they appear however the media grift far exceeds the reality of the situation(its still useful).
the only potential event that i can see causing catastrophe on the horizon would be the war spillover as we have seen recently with Poland, that is a real danger. once nato is drawn into that conflict it is truly over. just some thoughts on my mind

We compare every crisis to "the worst crisis since X" where X might be 2008, 2001, 1929, etc. But there had to be a first for those times. Maybe in 100 years they will be saying "worst crisis since 2023" or something. We draw lines on graphs to create trends, but something had to create that trend. Something had to make the first bottom. And then, they didn't know, they had nothing to compare it to. We could be in uncharted territories. We could be the bad times. We could break records and make new bottoms that TAfags will be drawing lines from in 100 years.
