it literally can't work without bitcoin mainchain. lightning is a separate network, and not. all nodes are actually 2 nodes: 1 bitcoin node and 1 lightning node that uses the bitcoin node api. the lightning node relies on the bitcoin node for almost everything important. now there is an electrum server in between them, that makes it a bit more flexible.
