You give an exchange $50 USD for x crypto, they give you the crypto, they take your $50 and use it to buy meth. A day later you say "okay I'd like my $50" and they have to use someone else's $50 to give you, repeat that until they run out of people who owe them $50 and now they technically don't actually have any money to give you.
