Hi frens,
Anyone got some good information or tips on buying silverware from thrift stores?
I was in my local thrift shop and just thought I would check out anything that looked like silver. I found a huge "silver plated" plate for $2. Didn't buy it though as I've not developed this hobby.. yet.
But without buying an expensive tester, if there anything to look out for? I know sterling silver usually has markings on it, but does that apply to everything?

It is a hedge against inflation over long enough time spans. I don't give a shit what mainstream retards say. I've been in this for over a decade now and it has always beaten inflation. Only for short time-frames AND if you bought at the wrong time has this not been true. This is also true for gold and silver, just less extreme. Also, the original point of bitcoin was to be a digital p2p cash system that is free from supply manipulation. It being a hedge against inflation is more of a consequence.

It's kinda hard to say. We've had a quasi-economy since the bailouts happened in 2008. Everything that's happened in the markets since then has happened in the context of cheap debt and money supply expansion. In the area I live, there were YOY price increases in housing from 2017-2019 from 20% to as high as 50%. Mid 2020 thru early 2022 saw much the same trends in real estate here, with a plateau in June, and now a steady slow decline. It'll be interesting to see where things go by next summer, and especially by next Christmas. When you build an economy on 1.5-2% interest, there's really no telling how bad things will get when it contracts. The most important thing anyone can do in my opinion is get out of debt, and put your wealth into hard assets that can be used to generate value. Tools, guns, fertile land, literally anything, is better than being stuck holding debt instruments. What the fuck will stocks, bonds, crypto, investment real estate do for you if people literally can't afford nutritious food? A fucking sweet potato patch in your yard will be a better investment of time and energy than anything else. Just my 2c.

Got my sterling footed "salver" tray in the mail this morning, it weighs out at 610 grams of thicc sturdy silver and is a nice high quality antique piece. $158.75 total with shipping and tax on eBay for 18.14ozt of pure silver worth $397 at melt comes out to $8.75/ozt. The British hallmarks say it was made in Sheffield in 1930, not super old but it's in nice shape so I'm keeping it in the collection not refining it. Happy hunting lads.

>>52344259
>I know sterling silver usually has markings on it, but does that apply to everything?

In the USA most good silver you're likely to encounter is pretty clearly stamped or embossed "STERLING", but English sterling is marked with their own hallmarking and date letter system, early American "coin silver" items usually had no purity stamps/hallmarks but is easy to recognize with a bit of experience, and various foreign silver items all had their own domestic hallmarking systems and "standard" finenesses though conveniently they often marked things with easily understood millesimal fineness like 800, 830, 835, 900, 925, 935, 950 etc using little hallmark stamps. Take pics of all the markings and post here if you're unsure, several anons are good at reading silver stamps or recognizing silverplate and can help you out.

A better strategy is to consider multiple outcomes and weight according to how likely they are and how painful getting it wrong would be. Even if the system is failing it's going to fizzle out over years and you might be able to profit from that. A lot of stuff still is cheap so any gains in the last year would buy you more supplies now than a year ago. For some kind of things at least.

So usually most items that are silver will have some sort of stamp or hallmark, apart from the "coin silver" items?
I'm living in Canada atm, and I feel like I'm actually in a fairly decent spot to find good items at my local thrift store.
There's ALOT of rich boomers around me, and then a huge young population that only care about partying/skiing, so im doubtful there's much competition from anyone looking for silverware in my thrift store... I'll go back today and have another look. Will post any findings tomorrow if I get anything.

I don't agree that silver will become 'unobtainium'. I think, assuming the comex runs dry and silver moons to $400-$1000, it will very slowly start to be treated more like gold in the minds of the general public. If anyone reading this already has a years worth of silver to get them through an extremely hard year, then they absolutely don't need to fomo into overpriced rounds. The deals are still out there and they don't cost a 40% premium.

Sounds like you're in a great area to hunt for cheapies, be on the lookout for local estate sales too. Old Canadian silver can be slightly tricky, until the 1900s they didn't really have a uniform hallmarking system so lots of older Canadian made silver isn't marked "STERLING" and instead has pseudo-hallmarks imitating English style hallmarks, with Lion Passant and Lion Rampant marks being most common. In the past trying to identify some pieces that looked English or Scottish drove me crazy until I realized they were actually Canadian sterling. Thankfully later Canadian pieces were stamped "STERLING" like USA stuff, they also imported lots of easy to recognize American and trickier UK silver so being familiar with English hallmarks will be helpful. You probably have a bit of Mexican sterling floating around there too which was usually marked STERLING or 925 so that should be easy.

Honestly I see alot of that going on around here, lots of rich buy houses and just bulldoze them straight the way, great idea to lookout for also.
I am actually English so yes I am familiar with British hallmarks, not exactly what they all mean but I recognize them.
Again thanks alot for the useful information, I'll take a look at that website to give myself an idea.
I will definitely be heading there after work today for another look and will post if I find anything, honestly I'm feeling lucky! I'll look strange for buying grandmas old silverware instead of ski gear, but fuck um.

You have two options, do it outside with proper ppe like goggles, gloves and a respitaor rated for fumes. Or, do it inside in a fume hood, with proper ppe. It's no more dangerous one way or the other. The issue is the fumes (NO2), they are deadly poisons, and proper precaution while working with the very strong acids required.

Just picked up these bits at the Goodwill, left one is a 7g Italian gold plated sterling necklace and pendant so wasn't really a cheapie but I can't resist buying stuff like that. The bead bracelet is more interesting, clasp is marked 10k and the small beads and other gold metal parts appear to match. Not sure what's going on in the larger colorful enameled "gold" metal beads but they may be 10k gold too? Regardless there isn't much to lose when it's $4.24 and at 9 grams there's $200 to gain if it's all 10 karat gold, happy hunting lads.

It depends what you already stacked, and how much of a cash emergency fund you got. Also it depends on your prices and/or taxes to buy those metals.

I'm thinking maybe to ditch my plan of getting 18 collectible coins, and just get another tube of 20 armenian arks and 2 collectible coins. Four more ounces for the same price! And less capsule faggotry to deal with. That plastic stuff takes up lots of space.

I mean, when you think of it in terms of labor hours, a denarii was a day's wages (10-12 hours back then) and a denarii was 3.8g pure of AG.

Thus, Judas betrayed Jesus for the equivalent of 257hrs-1,244hrs of work (per >>52352502.) If you take the median income in the US, ($50,391 for 2021) and divide that by 2000 hours (40 hours/week, 50 weeks/year,) you get an hourly rate of $25.20.

Thus, the labor value of Judas' betrayal was $6,475-$31,343. A pretty sizeable chunk of money, but I'd like to think I wouldn't betray the Messiah for $30k.

Defrauded 3,000 customers of more than $30 million
Seattle –The former President & CEO of Northwest Territorial Mint, a now-bankrupt company dealing in precious metals, was sentenced today in U.S. District Court in Seattle to 11 years in prison for 14 federal felonies resulting from a Ponzi-like scheme that defrauded customers of millions of dollars, announced U.S. Attorney Nick Brown. Bernard Ross Hansen, 61, aka Ross B. Hansen was convicted of multiple counts of wire and mail fraud after a four-week jury trial in July 2021. Hansen’s co-defendant and partner, Vault Manager Diane Renee Erdmann, 49, was convicted of 13 counts of wire fraud and mail fraud. She was sentenced to five years in prison. This was the second scheduled sentencing hearing for the two after they failed to show up for their late April court date and attempted to flee.

And the anti-silver fud targeted at euros begins.
>Oh no, I'll have to buy silver at a 1:64 price ratio instead of 1:80, right before going back to 1:15, maybe even 1:8 once the comex has no physical silver anymore

If any anons want so share the basic template I can try to mock up something. The important part is we have NORF FC Greggs on obverse and SOUF FC on the reverse.

It could be a “token” of sorts. The inscription around the border would say “good for one chippy” and “.999 fine silvuh”

A neoclassical rehash of a Greek design from the 5th century BC (like the worn coin just below), later copied by Republican Romans on some Denarii. Italy struck a 1 Lira and big 5 Lire with the same design, I really want one but they're fookin' expensive.

Bro Im not too sure what you're talking about that's the starting price on an auction that just started up and since then it's up to almost $600 now. (minus the auction fees)
Well might as well lurk ebay to see of I can have at least some success haggling on pieces like this.
It seems like it's impossible to get a decent quality VF shekel without spending more than an entire ounce of gold on one.

The coin in your cap is grossly overpriced, sellers like them are rip-off artists preying on noobs.

There are lots of different coins up for auction in the numisbid links, not sure what specific one you're looking at. Perfectly decent tets from Tyre of the style used to pay Judas can be gotten for under $200, very nice ones for under $500. check these realized prices from CNG and see for yourself what they actually sell for (sorry for long link):
