Welcome to the Monero General, dedicated to the discussion of the world's leading decentralized P2P privacy cryptocurrency!

Monero is secure, low-fee, and fungible, meaning users can send XMR around the globe despite corrupt governments or broken financial systems. Innovative privacy features such as Ring Signatures, Stealth Addresses, and Ring CT ensure that Monero's blockchain is obfuscated -- In other words, the financial history of all Monero users is encrypted from the prying eyes of adversaries on a public blockchain, with transactions being visible only by a user willingly providing a view key.

Monero has also improved upon the scaling downsides of current popular cryptocurrencies. To avoid high fees, dynamic block size ensures that the size of the blocks will increase as the amount of transactions increases. Further, the mining network algorithm RandomX establishes that anybody with a CPU can participate in mining, preventing the ASIC miner domination that creates a high barrier to entry. Lastly, the mining network will be preserved by Tail Emission -- instead of the block reward falling to zero like with Bitcoin, the block reward gradually approached 0.6 XMR in June 2022, where it will forever stay. This constant linear inflation means the inflation rate will asymptotically go to zero while continuing to provide an incentive to miners to maintain the network.

If you still have questions, feel free to ask and a MoneroChad will be with you shortly.

START MINING IN P2POOL
>START MINING IN P2POOL
START MINING IN P2POOL
>START MINING IN P2POOL

P2Pool combines the advantages of pool and solo mining; you still fully control your Monero node and what it mines, but you get frequent payouts like on a regular pool.

P2Pool has no central server that can be shutdown/blocked because it uses a separate blockchain to merge mine with Monero. There's no pool admin that can control what your hashrate is used for or decide who can mine on the pool and who can't. It's permissionless!

Decentralized pool mining (P2Pool) is pretty much the ultimate way to secure a PoW coin against 51% attacks. When P2Pool reaches 51% of the total network hashrate, Monero will be essentially invulnerable to such attacks.

>YOU CAN NOW MINE IN P2POOL DIRECTLY FROM THE MONERO GUI WALLET!

If you have a PC or laptop:

1. Download Monero GUI
https://i.imgur.com/ZGefPef.png

2. Pick 'Advanced' mode
https://i.imgur.com/4c0uSE4.png

3. Set up your wallet
https://i.imgur.com/4lMKh00.png

4. Keep the default Daemon settings "Start a node automatically in the background"
https://i.imgur.com/maACmmT.png

5. Once sync'd, go to Advanced->Mining and pick 'P2Pool'. If you have a laptop or low-end PC (~50 kH/s) pick "Mini" pool, else pick "Main"
https://i.imgur.com/E60JeMG.png

>YOU CAN USE P2POOL-COMPATIBLE REMOTE NODES IF YOU DO NOT HAVE YOUR OWN LOCAL COPY OF THE BLOCKCHAIN
https://xmrvsbeast.com/p2pool/monero_nodes.html

OTHERWISE SWITCH TO A SMALLER POOL, IT TAKES YOU 30 SECONDS AND YOU CAN JUST SOURCE A DIFFERENT CONFIG FILE IF YOU DON'T WANT TO FUCK UP YOUR EXISTING ONE.

Many inexperienced miners think that big pools give better profits which is not the case. Your profits in the long run depend ONLY on your hashrate, NOT on the pool's hashrate.

>The irrational exuberance of cryptocurrency investors

Irrational exuberance is characterized as a hype-fueled mania that causes investors to massively overestimate an asset's real-world value. In this delusional state, investors tend to become so smitten with expectations of greater profits that they disregard the assets’ potentially weak fundamentals and drink the proverbial Kool-Aid.

This then leads to them recklessly and repeatedly buying into whatever asset is currently rising in the charts, thereby triggering and/or sustaining an asset bubble. This bubble is kept inflated solely by the mass delusion that the market price is justified and will only keep going up in future, effectively becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy. Note that bubbles can last for years, especially in an age of easy investor on-boarding. However, when history inevitably repeats and the bubble bursts that optimism invariably turns into panic as the asset crashes back down to its real-world value.

In finance, the "greater fool theory" suggests that one can sometimes make money through the purchase of overvalued assets—items with a purchase price drastically exceeding the intrinsic value—if those assets can later be resold at an even higher price.

In this context, one "fool" might pay for an overpriced asset, hoping that he can sell it to an even "greater fool" and make a profit. This only works as long as there are enough new "greater fools" willing to pay higher and higher prices for the asset. Eventually, investors can no longer deny that the price is out of touch with reality, at which point a sell-off can cause the price to drop significantly until it is closer to its fair value, which in some cases could be zero.

This effect is often further exacerbated by herd mentality, whereby people hear stories of others who bought in early and made big profits, causing those who did not buy to feel a fear of missing out.

52291606

>No tail emission = Bitcoin is fucked

Right now, at the current hashrate, miners break even on energy expenses at a BTC price of $22K. Post 2024 halving, that break even point, at the current hashrate, goes up to $44K. If BTC does not go to $44K, miners will be unprofitable and hashrate will have to drop (miners going out of business) to reduce the cost of securing the network, also reducing the security.

If you know anything about the power of 2, you already know that things get very big, very fast. If we’re 3 halvings into 32 total halvings, then the estimated break even point for miners at current hashrate going into the last halving would be:

$22,000 * (2^27) = $2,952,790,016,000 per BTC

$2,952,790,016,000 per BTC * 21 Million total Bitcoin = $62,008,590,336,000,000,000 BTC Market Cap

The block rewards shrink so fast that after enough halvings Bitcoin would eventually require a $2.95 trillion price per Bitcoin and a $62 quintillion market cap to sustain the current cost of $7.15 billion/year.

Even if these numbers were somehow realistic, can you imagine securing a $62 quintillion market cap on only $7.15 billion/year of hashrate? LOL.

And that’s assuming energy costs do not increase at all over the next 120 years, which they will.

So basically BTC mining will eventually become so unprofitable the hashrate (network security) will shrivel up UNLESS it is subsidized by BTC transaction fees.

Miner technology advancing will accelerate this issue, not fix it. If a new ASIC comes out that is 100x better then the network isn't "more secure" because there is more hashes, it just means that anyone who wants to compete to participate in consensus NEEDS to buy the new equipment which will always consume more energy (which costs money).

The price to attack the network is based on the price to buy the equipment to create the attack. So revolutionizing ASIC mining to produce more hashes is not going to increase the price to attack unless the ASIC is more expensive (which disincentives mining) and by doing so more energy will need to be consumed by miners to stay in competition with each other. Each new ASIC only increases how much energy the system must eat up to prevent an attack. New ASICs doesn't mean less ASICs, it just means the ASICs are consuming more energy.

If you think about it miners pay money for a proportion of the consensus, which is not something that changes with new ASICs. If miners are willing to pay 300 million (random "for the example" number) for current ASIC equipment and a new ASIC comes out that outcompetes their equipment then rationally they will also spend 300 million on the new ASICs. the price to attack the network is still 300 million but the cost to keep the ASICs running is higher because the energy draw is higher.

tl;dr better ASICs consume more energy without providing better resistance to attack because the price to attack the network is based on how much people are willing to pay for the ASICs and their uptime costs (which perpetually increases).

Not exactly "cool" as a few core team members don't really like that their website was masquerading (allegedly unintentionally) as the "official" site. They didn't say that it's the official site of course but to a newcomer it seems that way before they added the disclaimer and color scheme changes. There is also the fact that Vik already owns (and thus has a vested interest in) cake wallet which could alter the development in a way that benefits them. I find that the likelihood that the interests conflict to be slim however.

At the end of the day things will probably be fine and this might get haveno to actually get fucking released already.

as Havenos newly appointed community manager I'll chime in and say cake has done pretty well so far and while there are some things one could point at and say "cake bad", in my opinion there was never any obvious malicious stuff and the drama that did happen, they have always handled very well.

After the "zcash in cakewallet" drama they made a whole nother app just for monero-only people. They already know how to make mobile wallets so taking 250k to make one for zcash isnt something insanely unthinkable or morally corrupt.
They got the monero.com domain and while you can think of the website & name whatever you want, they have been listening to community input. Of course they need to at least recoup the 400k they spent on the domain and cant just hand it over to core for free. Still better than having the domain owned by an outsider and potentially bought up by zcorp or something to put fake news about monero on.

adding everything up, id say cake has so far had a massive positive impact on the whole Monero ecosystem and im glad we have them around. as long as they dont go rouge and keep at it how they have, there shouldnt be any major problems.

i also think they will have a massive positive impact on Haveno development. Starting with funding the rest of the UI.
even though i dont think they will add it to cakewallet (trades on Haveno are a lot more clunky and slow than on something like Serai), they might make a seperate mobile app for it or do other things that wouldnt have been possible otherwise.

call me a corpo shill but that's my opinion on cake.

(my fucking cakewallet + monerocom wallet keep crashing whenever i go to the "receive" tab. on pixel 6 pro, fix yo shit vik)

Does Seraphis development need money though? They seem to have their own CCS'es got funded. Are there any more expenses they foresee? If so, can't they be paid from another CCS?

2) Anon indeed has implied that he sent that much XMR for buying the domain back. By not buying it, it seems like we are going against his wish. But then again, he can/should chime in again and be more assertive towards what to do with his donations.

seraphis in particular will most likely have a few more ccs proposals (the last one was for a proof of concept implementation of a wallet). from the proposal that is currently being worked on "If everything goes well, I believe we could have a basic PoC CLI wallet by the end of January/23 and enough achievements to move to testnet."
but the general fund itself is pretty laughable compared to the reserves most other projects have so not instantly spending a donation that is like 50% of your existing capital should be a carefully considered move. its not like vik will just sell it off in the foreseeable future. best case, xmr pumps a whole bunch and we can buy the domain from vik for a fraction of the donated xmr.

If nobody is going to shoo the redditor away I'm going to.

Why Monero is better than Zcash

>no CEO
>no centralized corporate structure
>not answerable to institutional donors/investors/shareholders
>not overly-concerned with compliance
>fully private at protocol-level
>uses established, reliable, battle-tested cryptography as opposed to novel, experimental, resource-hogging cryptography
>no suspected backdoors
>no dev tax
>no trusted setup
>not a Bitcoin fork
>tail emission
>ASIC resistance
>dynamic blocksize
>lower inflation
>ever-increasing real-world adoption
>passionate grassroots enthusiasm
>significantly better reputation

No crypto will ever become the global currency, that belongs to CBDC Fedcoins. But crypto can dominate the shadow economy where governmental jurisdiction is irrelevant. And guess which crypto has already established itself as the go-to black market coin? It ain't Ztrash.

getmonero.org has its binaries with sha256 hashes, so it should be resistant to accidental corruption and intentional tampering. The hashes are also GPG signed by binaryFate. So there is nothing the Monero core devs could do to ensure that the binaries are not tampered with. But please correct me, I would love to see more secure ways to verify binary integrity.

Actually ISIS followed the fundamentalist Islamic way and only minted gold and silver as their official money. I remember watching their propaganda video where they told how gold and silver are the only acceptable forms of money because they were created by god with the necessary physical characteristics and not by humans.
I could make an argument that since we can't store and exchange gold over the internet without relying on corruptible third parties, a money that is assured by math and cryptography to be incorruptible is the proper form of money in the digital realm. Cryptography is one of god's shining beacons of truth in the cyber realm, incorruptible by Satan. Everything else can be spoofed. As such, "not your keys not your crypto" is also indeed a halal concept.

I really want to know what Zcucks believe the longterm privacy in money will look like.

Every CBDC will come with it's own little privacy compliant package.

You think the senators and the presidents will want their accounts exposed because they bought a coffee at starbucks without cycling addresses and wallets? You're gonna get a surface-level privacy that will look like a black box to normies. You think they're gonna let some outsider come up with an analysis method that they don't control? Meanwhile every purchase you make will be analyzed on the backend between data brokers, cops and politicians.

No shit, just like ring signatures will be ditched for zk-STARKs eventually.

Bottom line: its highly unlikely that Zcash will ever gain the upper hand on Monero, especially with its reputation so deep in the shitter.
