That's not how you calculate probabilities.

If you want to win a lottery with numbers 1 through 3 and two draws you need to buy 3 tickets in total (1 and 2, 1 and 3, 2 ad 3). This funtion written as "3choose2" and is equal to 3. You wouldn't do 3x2. Similarly for powerball you need to solve "69choose5"×"26choose1", not simply multiply things together.

Okay everytime I see someone say the lottery is a bad buy, its under the assumption that your wasting hundreds a month in tickets, because yeah that's the only way you can realistically say that. Otherwise it doesn't work if you play once in a while.

There is pretty much nothing with a higher reward ratio than the lottery. 2 dollars cash spent on the lottery once in a while, is a better investment than virtually anything else you can do with that two dollars. You can't invest 2 dollars cash, fees alone would fuck you over, and even if could, you would then need to correctly pick a stock that has a return of 100000000% in order to rival what the lottery would give you for two dollars.

In fact it doesn't even really work for the numbers they use (sometimes)
this for example
>Spending $5 per week on lottery tickets adds up to $260 per year. Over 20 years (a typical long-term investment horizon for stocks and bonds), the total spent on lottery tickets would be $5,200. Putting $260 per year into stocks (and assuming annual returns of about 7% based on equities' historical performance) would leave you with $11,015 after 20 years. But if you just spent the money on lottery tickets you'd only be left with your (likely negligible) prizes won.

>field too long
wtf tell me how much characters over the limit I am

>> No.52281967

continued....

What is gonna change your life more? $11,015 in 20 years or being a fucking millionaire today? They don't take in to account the vast difference between having a couple extra thousand decades later vs being a multimillionaire now. When this is taken into account, it's makes it much more worth it. The thing is for a lot of people playing, they're locked into poverty regardless of if they save that 2 dollars or spend it on the lottery.
I guess to put it all simply... Save and invest the 2 dollars, your chance of getting out of poverty is 0% due to it. Spend it on the lottery, you have a very small chance but it's higher.
By the way, the time spent also needs to be taken into consideration. Sure you could do some kind of straw millionaire deal and painstakingly trade your way up to a million dollars from that 2 dollars. But even if it did work, which it has a low chance of working in the first place, probably less than a powerball ticket, it would take far far longer than the time spent buying a ticket at the corner store.

There is no need for getting a bunch of quarter flips in a row right in order to win the lotto on one try. All you need to do is show up and play at the time that God wills you to win. If God wills you to win and you rebel against Him and do not get a ticket then you really fucked yourself in the ass. You should have been humble and followed the voice of the shepherd, retard. I just play every now and then to give God the opportunity to bless me in that way if He wants to, but if He doesn't then that is fine too, I just want whatever He wants for me because He knows way better than I do.

>you're better off adding your $2 to a savings account and then investing that once it gets large enough.
Better off in that you will have a couple more thousand in a few decades (which will actually be much less due to inflation), if you're still alive. You gave your self a 0% chance to be a multimillionare at any point in your life for this.

And this reply ties in to the other part of my argument.
Disability payments aren't going to make you a multimillionaire like the lottery could. Even the most freak of freak coincidence windfalls can't compare to the lottery which is in a league of its own, anything comparable in odds is gonna pay less.
Anything that could pay similarly has even worse odds. Sorry but I'm gonna say the odds of you being warren buffets illegitimate child and him wanting to leave you his fortune when he dies is even lower than winning the powerball.

Can either of you fine gentlemen tell me how many people have lost the lottery though? Nobody seems to want to talk about that for some reason.

Exactly anons. At least buy one ticket and should God will then His will be done. That's why when I win I will make a religious organization and the money goes into that.

lmao that's so disingenuous. Of course someone has to win by nature of a lottery being probabilistic. Over billions of attempts, the odds of even extremely unlikely events occuring once nears 100%. But to focus on the one winner instead of the literally hundreds of millions of losers is statistical illiteracy at its finest. I'm sorry your peabrain can't conceive of such unfathomable odds, but you and everyone you will ever know will be part of the 99.99999999% of humanity that will never win. Ever.

So several hundred multimillionaire do that, and then several hundred people split the jackpot. Better hope it covers what you spent.
