Financially speaking for cars, what makes the most "sense" for 30 somethings?

if you can, wait until used car prices come down
used vs new for some cars are the same price now
finance a 2017-2020 used car for max depreciation savings
ideally wait until used prices come down

>> No.52249095

It depends on how much money you have. If you're wealthy and already have investments and can afford to keep investing, it's fine to buy a nice car because you're ok financially and you'll be better spending some money to have some fun.

If you don't have a specific plan and money can be an issue as it is for most people, yo must obtain some financial security because it's what will improve your life the most, in that case used is usually best value, just a bit annoying to change some parts here and there, however, mechanically decent used cars can still run a lot sometimes and cost a fraction of new.

I would only consider not buying if I lived in a city center and can access everything, otherwise, a car is a must in my opinion, you shouldn't have rely on others

Rich? McLaren F1.
Well off? Aston
Middle class? Huracan / NSX / GTR / 911 Turbo
Lower middle class? M3
Poor? C-class or Supra

Seriously? Elantra or Civic if you can afford it new without credit, after shopping around for MSRP. Why? Because maintenance of a used car will exceed depreciation on base models or kill you on time (NOT a good use of time).

If you can wrench / like to wrench / and/or really can't afford a new car, it makes sense to buy something cheap to maintain used.

I bought a 2 liter 2017 mazda 3 manual 6 speed with 70k miles for $11,600 a couple years ago. Gets 34.4 mpg city, 42.4 freeway. loads of space in the trunk, seats 5, and can actually hoon with it if you're not a shitty shifter. you wont have to upgrade until you have more than 3 kids.

its also beating out every other car in reliability. You can't lose with the thing. So i suggest buy one brand new or used. Either way, again you cant lose.

To me the best option for a new vehicle is a hatchback. Not too expensive, good mpg's, plenty of cargo space, good handling.

CUV/SUV - female vehicle and shit handling.
Trucks - Shitty handling, mpg's, hueg.
Sedans - Less cargo than Hatch and more expensive.

lease if you have an LLC and can write it off as a business expense (and actually do use it for that purpose, somewhat)

The sweet spot in terms of value / looking rich and successful is a used Tesla Model S with free supercharging. If you get the right model (a 75d or a 90d) and avoid the bad ones (any pre-facelift car, and any RWD model) you should have no serious reliability problems for a very long time.
Not only does it kinda make financial sense (you buy a car get the fucking fuel for free) but, unlike any other economical car, you get to drive something that is seriously impressive to normies. A Tesla Model S is one of a few cars that will actually get you laid.

Depends on the car/mileage/market & if you are using it for a business.

For most people, buy low (10-30K miles) mileage & well maintained/serviced cars that are 3 years old, a ton of them hitting the market at that time due to leases ending.

Then do only basic preventative maintenance. Oil changes/brake pads/new tires at 50K, and dump your bags on the next guy at 80-90K miles, since nobody wants to buy cars with over 100K miles.

this is only true if either free supercharging or in the US.

european fast charging (superchargers, not the puny charger at ikea) costs 0.80 to 1€ per kwh, meaning a 100 kwh costs more than 100€ to charge (charging inefficiencies) and gets you 500km of range at most. (realistic range, not advertised range). so 20€/100km. even at current clownworld prices of 2€/l of fuel if your car burns less than 10l per 100km, charging is more expensive than fuel.
