So I've been doing this for about 7 months full time now, opening probably 4 positions per week on average and I've only been assigned once. I held the wrong way through a JPow meeting and like an idiot let it get down to 3 DTE or something like that expiring the next Monday or Wednesday. So it was Friday and I guess they didn't want to wait through the weekend so they exercised right after market close. Now this position was extremely ITM. So tl;dr close your position before 7 DTE and don't let a deep ITM position sit. If you do that you'll be fine.

You mean you risk 25% of your account, I assume? I risked a decent chunk today, pretty close to that (first time playing with them desu but that's how I learn, I don't paper trade). It was a 1dte put spread at 478/477 and if the SPY opens close to where it is now I'll already be at like 90% max profit. I'm thinking about closing at that point but one thing I'm not sure about is whether I get charged for closing them (TD Ameritrade) and if so, then if I just let them expire will I avoid the contract fees (I assume yes).

Yes, but the risk is only for assignment for a max loss. In all likelihood, that will not happen since I use >15 DTE. I pick a best case scenario SPY price to close at and a worst case scenario SPY price to close at. So realistically, even when I'm 75% of my buying power into a movement (I almost never go 100%), I'm really only going to be down 20% max. Which is basically the Kelly criterion and where I feel comfortable.

It's pretty comfy not having to worry about theta, plus you can just keep rolling if you want to.

I believe that TD Ameritrade does charge to close. I use tastyworks which I am happy with, it caps commission at $10 per leg of the trade. It doesn't charge to close, but it charges $1 per contract upfront so it's basically the same thing. I do like not worrying about closing costs though, holding to expiry is dangerous and I wouldn't do it. But to each their own.

The problem with buying options is that you need conviction on magnitude, not just direction, and I've been burned by being correct on direction but just barely off on magnitude (meaning the options expires worthless despite being almost perfectly correct) enough times now to where I'm ready to switch up strategies. I randomly decided to try a 1dte vertical spread today and picked up 378/377 (what I meant to type before) put vertical with a 31 cent spread, which to me seemed like a steal since I felt very confident we wouldn't by there by close tomorrow. I think it all depends on what chart level you're used to analyzing and comfortable with.

Quick question though: when you say 50 delta what delta are you referring to?

I should clarify that the magnitude only matters with otm buys. I don't like buying itm because it ties up more capital = more risk, so if your thesis is wrong you're potentially even more fucked than before. It's a valid point though I'm going to run some simulations to figure out when each strategy makes more sense.

Found the Kelly criterion.

Short dated puts are just shittier, if you play with them you'll see what I mean. Let's say today you bought 1dte 375 puts for 3.65 (a reasonable entry point). Due to theta decay you need Friday close to be around 371.25 just to break even, which is way below the strike. With a vertical spread you don't have to worry about that at all, if it's below your strikes you win, if it's above you lose (and some grey area in the 1 pt range between them). It's a much cleaner prediction, easier to make than worrying about decay and trying to calculate strike, entry, exit etc.

I do think buying puts/calls have their place but that's a once or twice a month trade not a weekly/daily trade imo.
