Welcome to the Monero General, dedicated to the discussion of the world's leading decentralized P2P privacy cryptocurrency!

Monero is secure, low-fee, and fungible, meaning users can send XMR around the globe despite corrupt governments or broken financial systems. Innovative privacy features such as Ring Signatures, Stealth Addresses, and Ring CT ensure that Monero's blockchain is obfuscated -- In other words, the financial history of all Monero users is encrypted from the prying eyes of adversaries on a public blockchain, with transactions being visible only by a user willingly providing a view key.

Monero has also improved upon the scaling downsides of current popular cryptocurrencies. To avoid high fees, dynamic block size ensures that the size of the blocks will increase as the amount of transactions increases. Further, the mining network algorithm RandomX establishes that anybody with a CPU can participate in mining, preventing the ASIC miner domination that creates a high barrier to entry. Lastly, the mining network will be preserved by Tail Emission -- instead of the block reward falling to zero like with Bitcoin, the block reward gradually approached 0.6 XMR in June 2022, where it will forever stay. This constant linear inflation means the inflation rate will asymptotically go to zero while continuing to provide an incentive to miners to maintain the network.

If you still have questions, feel free to ask and a MoneroChad will be with you shortly.

START MINING IN P2POOL
>START MINING IN P2POOL
START MINING IN P2POOL
>START MINING IN P2POOL

P2Pool combines the advantages of pool and solo mining; you still fully control your Monero node and what it mines, but you get frequent payouts like on a regular pool.

P2Pool has no central server that can be shutdown/blocked because it uses a separate blockchain to merge mine with Monero. There's no pool admin that can control what your hashrate is used for or decide who can mine on the pool and who can't. It's permissionless!

Decentralized pool mining (P2Pool) is pretty much the ultimate way to secure a PoW coin against 51% attacks. When P2Pool reaches 51% of the total network hashrate, Monero will be essentially invulnerable to such attacks.

>YOU CAN NOW MINE IN P2POOL DIRECTLY FROM THE MONERO GUI WALLET!

If you have a PC or laptop:

1. Download Monero GUI
https://i.imgur.com/ZGefPef.png

2. Pick 'Advanced' mode
https://i.imgur.com/4c0uSE4.png

3. Set up your wallet
https://i.imgur.com/4lMKh00.png

4. Keep the default Daemon settings "Start a node automatically in the background"
https://i.imgur.com/maACmmT.png

5. Once sync'd, go to Advanced->Mining and pick 'P2Pool'. If you have a laptop or low-end PC (~50 kH/s) pick "Mini" pool, else pick "Main"
https://i.imgur.com/E60JeMG.png

>YOU CAN USE P2POOL-COMPATIBLE REMOTE NODES IF YOU DO NOT HAVE YOUR OWN LOCAL COPY OF THE BLOCKCHAIN
https://xmrvsbeast.com/p2pool/monero_nodes.html

OTHERWISE SWITCH TO A SMALLER POOL, IT TAKES YOU 30 SECONDS AND YOU CAN JUST SOURCE A DIFFERENT CONFIG FILE IF YOU DON'T WANT TO FUCK UP YOUR EXISTING ONE.

Many inexperienced miners think that big pools give better profits which is not the case. Your profits in the long run depend ONLY on your hashrate, NOT on the pool's hashrate.

>The irrational exuberance of cryptocurrency investors

Irrational exuberance is characterized as a hype-fueled mania that causes investors to massively overestimate an asset's real-world value. In this delusional state, investors tend to become so smitten with expectations of greater profits that they disregard the assets’ potentially weak fundamentals and drink the proverbial Kool-Aid.

This then leads to them recklessly and repeatedly buying into whatever asset is currently rising in the charts, thereby triggering and/or sustaining an asset bubble. This bubble is kept inflated solely by the mass delusion that the market price is justified and will only keep going up in future, effectively becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy. Note that bubbles can last for years, especially in an age of easy investor on-boarding. However, when history inevitably repeats and the bubble bursts that optimism invariably turns into panic as the asset crashes back down to its real-world value.

In finance, the "greater fool theory" suggests that one can sometimes make money through the purchase of overvalued assets—items with a purchase price drastically exceeding the intrinsic value—if those assets can later be resold at an even higher price.

In this context, one "fool" might pay for an overpriced asset, hoping that he can sell it to an even "greater fool" and make a profit. This only works as long as there are enough new "greater fools" willing to pay higher and higher prices for the asset. Eventually, investors can no longer deny that the price is out of touch with reality, at which point a sell-off can cause the price to drop significantly until it is closer to its fair value, which in some cases could be zero.

This effect is often further exacerbated by herd mentality, whereby people hear stories of others who bought in early and made big profits, causing those who did not buy to feel a fear of missing out.

51652816

>No tail emission = Bitcoin is fucked

Right now, at the current hashrate, miners break even on energy expenses at a BTC price of $22K. Post 2024 halving, that break even point, at the current hashrate, goes up to $44K. If BTC does not go to $44K, miners will be unprofitable and hashrate will have to drop (miners going out of business) to reduce the cost of securing the network, also reducing the security.

If you know anything about the power of 2, you already know that things get very big, very fast. If we’re 3 halvings into 32 total halvings, then the estimated break even point for miners at current hashrate going into the last halving would be:

$22,000 * (2^27) = $2,952,790,016,000 per BTC

$2,952,790,016,000 per BTC * 21 Million total Bitcoin = $62,008,590,336,000,000,000 BTC Market Cap

The block rewards shrink so fast that after enough halvings Bitcoin would eventually require a $2.95 trillion price per Bitcoin and a $62 quintillion market cap to sustain the current cost of $7.15 billion/year.

Even if these numbers were somehow realistic, can you imagine securing a $62 quintillion market cap on only $7.15 billion/year of hashrate? LOL.

And that’s assuming energy costs do not increase at all over the next 120 years, which they will.

So basically BTC mining will eventually become so unprofitable the hashrate (network security) will shrivel up UNLESS it is subsidized by BTC transaction fees.

It's not worth mining even with high end cpus.
That's by design and the currently very low price.
Also Intel processors are slightly worse at mining in general.
The question is do you want to support the network? Great! Mine with anything.
Keep in mind that you won't make any money tho.

>Trusted technology, growing adoption

Zcash was launched by one of the most respected technical teams in the world.

Zcash is the 'https of blockchains,' protecting your freedom to save and spend as you like.

Zcash was the first project to implement zk-SNARKs, a novel form of zero-knowledge cryptography that gives its users the strongest privacy available in any digital currency.

Multiple, independent organizations are funded to innovate on Zcash.

Zcash is already available on top exchanges, digital wallets and a growing number of applications.

I don't know how these two things are related.
There are mathematical proofs the prove certain calculations give correct output even without knowing the actual result.
>Also wouldn’t it be easy to find out how to trace them when the code is open source?
No. Math is strong. There are many math problems we don't know the solution to when not given all the inputs.
>Where can I read about this?
Start with some basic crypto courses, like how works RSA, DH and so on so you get comfortable with cryptography. Then you can of course read the monero book.
Ring signatures are hard to understand without having strong math background so be prepared to get frustrated. I personally don't want to do this kind of math ever again.

>Can someone explain to my how Monero works so even devs do not know how to trace transactions apparently
Public key cryptography. Monero actually uses (a modern version of) cryptography developed in the 70's so that spy networks could send confidential information over an insecure channel that is likely to be monitored by an adversary. Monero takes this well-understood cryptography (known as a Diffie-Hellman key exchange) and uses it to generate a "stealth address" so that the only thing actually stored on the blockchain for receiving address is an encrypted string of characters no adversarial party trying to view transaction flow could derive information from. The cryptography of Monero has no dependence on special dev knowledge any more than Whitfield Diffie and Martin Hellman have any secret power to decrypt a D-H key exchange. This just covers one aspect of Monero's privacy (stealth addresses) but it's arguably the most important aspect and is based on iron-clad, very well tested cryptography.

There is firo (zcoin), but it has its own problems. Firo's cryptography is better, but their implementation is lacking and buggy, they have almost zero usage, they just aren't battle-tested like monero (zerocoin-based cryptocurrencies are bitcoin forks, they usually don't have that much thought put into them beyond proof-of-concept), they will mostly be made irrelevant by monero's planned seraphis upgrade, and they recently introduced PoS because they were getting 51%'d by miners.

Monero is the de-facto privacy coin. It is the only one actually used on the DN, it is the only one that gets properly audited, it is the only one that has a sufficiently large anonset, it is the only one with decentralized mining, and it is the only one with community-driven development (donation driven, not taking a percentage from miners).

Most other privacy altcoins are shitcoins. Stay far away from the likes of ARRR, GRIN, DERO, etc. and shitforks like XMC. As much as people shit on zcash here, there are are many worse privacy coins, and there's a reason why zcash is at least in second place: you get some points for showing up and not being a complete scam.

Really, it's monero in first place, then firo at a very distant second, then zcash at an even more distant third, and then a monsoon of scams behind them.

Tornado is an ETH mixer which ETH Niggers need because their transactions are open for the world to see. XMR does not need or use mixers and is just private by default. Send/Receive XMR and you're done. The government can regulate all they want but they can't stop people from transacting in XMR.

You get burned a bit with all the transfer fees between exchanges and stuff. So I would stick to doing a few big payments. But you can do localmonero too.

hello fren, if you mine at 1050h/s be sure that you chose to mine on P2Pool Mini as it is considered as "low" hashrate
to receive payment you need 2 things to occur: you need to find a p2pool share and p2pool needs to mine a monero block. both things need to happen within a 6h window.
this explains better -> https://github.com/SChernykh/p2pool#how-pplns-works-in-p2pool

this can take a while, sometimes days, and sometime you have multiple P2Pool share while P2Pool finds a block or more. you can calculate you average share thime here -> https://mini.p2pool.observer/calculate-share-time

also if you mine on windows, see this tutorial to mine with Xmrig rather than the GUI, it seems more efficient -> https://pst.klgrth.io/paste/bjk9r

Honestly this is impossible to properly calculate. A would be attacker has more to gain with increased price per coin, so are more willing to secure the network.

You could just calculate the price for all miners to secure the network right now as the cost that must be paid each day/month/year/timeframe (but it could change if electricity costs change and if ASICs improve, which will probably happen), but then you have to realize even if electricity and ASICs don't change this, increased market cap will.

That being said, the price to secure the network is way too high to be sustainable with this decreasing reward model (eventually 0). It will fail in time, for now it's a tool for degenerate gamblers to "hodl" onto because "muh limited supply" as if anything they say makes sense for a worldwide currency.

HELP

I keep getting this message when I run the daemon
>Invalid DNSSEC TXT record signature for updates.moneropulse.org: validation failure <updates.moneropulse.org. TXT IN>: no signatures from 192.168.1.1 for trust anchor . while building chain of trust

I have the full GUI software (on Windows) but most of the time just run the daemon with the text interface in cmd

It wasn't happening when I was on 0.17.3.2
But it has happened since I updated to 0.18.1.1

What does it mean and what should I do?

I already ran ipconfig /flushdns. Did nothing.
Then I ran it in an elevated cmd. Still did nothing.
Ran it again in an elevated cmd then restarted Windows. Still did nothing.

It seems like it's still syncing even after that message. However...I ran it less than 2 days ago until I was fully synced up. Today I run it again and it says I'm 14 days behind. How can I fall 14 days behind in just 2 days...unless I didn't get fully up to sync 2 days ago, even though the daemon said I did. So confuse.

outside of your current issue i would get rid of your isp supplied all in one. you pay a monthly fee for it anyways, its not free. just ask /g/ what the best current router is for dd-wrt whenever you get around to it. or turn an old computer into a pfsense/opnsense box. it might seem complicated at first but anyone who can RTFM can figure it out easily and there's even pretty good non pajeet guides for brainlets on yt for all three these days.
if you have cable internet you can almost always buy your own modem. they're dirt cheap used or open box. your isp probably has a list of supported modems. make sure its rated for the speeds you need.
if you have fiber you will probably have to use your isp provided ont box. i've been able to get some isp's to work without one using a sfp+ card, and some don't work, but don't tell your isp you're doing it. unlike cable companies they'll shut your service down if they find out you're not using their ont. they don't give a fuck if you use your own router though.
be aware you will get basically no tech support from your isp if you don't use their hardware.
but your isp provided hardware spies on you 100% chance if you're american and a high chance if you're european or elsewhere.
also as anons said, probably the root of your dns fuckery.

thanks guys
ok i tested thru vpn and yes no error message there so my default isp dns thingy is blocking moneropulse.org?

there doesnt seem to be a way to change the dns servers in the router settings, stuck with what they provide. but i guess i can change it on a per computer or per program basis?
on windows i think i remember how to do it (for my entire computer), but how would i go about changing it just for monero? is it possible? (i know changing it computer-wide would probably be better but im just a conservative guy when it comes to changes on the spot. call it boomerism, call it autism, whatever.)

as for changing the isp box wth my own hardware, thats a big project that i just don't have the time or energy or stomach for right now.

if you look under your box or the documentation they usualy provide you with a control panel (adress like 192.168.0.1) and there in the settings you can modify the DNS for your router
and you can change your dns per computer at least, it's easy on linux or windows, just google that
for dns i would advise https://www.opennic.org/ but take any you want

yeah, it's a really basic shitty router. it shos me what the dns servers are, but no way to change them.

Yeah so if there's no way to do it just for monero, I'll just do it for my whole wangblows system.

Ok I'll just change it computer-wide - well, at least for my home wifi connection. I'll try cloudflare or google first, once i'm comfortable with that i'll look into opennic.

(also yes i am aware that windows is fucking botnet and the opposite of private (monero), seems like an oxymoron, but i have to use windows for specific reasons for now)

ok yeah just tried cloudflare and the dns error message is gone

>> No.51709674

Short answer, probably not.

Long answer, when using a public DNS (like google, for this example), the DNS server will have a list of whatever you look up. I'm not sure the exact intricacies of it, but they may be able to do some sort of correlation attack I guess (to determine that the VPN IP is also you). At the end of the day, the trackers that are embedded into every website are a greater issue than your DNS. You shouldn't really rely on a VPN for serious privacy, especially if you aren't using a completely different browser to change your fingerprint

>> No.51709880

>>51709674
People misunderstand what VPNs are supposed to protect against. They protect against malicious local networks (public wifi, etc.), or against ISP shenanigans related to tracking which IPs you connect to. I run my own VPN tunnel out to a server I physically own because it works well for that and I don't have to risk the VPN operator turning against me. Does that prevent websites from personally identifying me if I allow their tracking resources to load? No, but neither does NordVPN.

Only used these 12 images for training. Once someone figures out how to export models to a .ckpt file for use with local instances I'll try to retrain with more variety.

I was just fucking around, didn't expect it to work as well as it has. Imagine if someone who knows what they're doing took a crack at it!

Are solar panels viable for you, anon?

If I had the money for solar panels I'd just pay my power bill in full and then leave the country with the remainder so I no longer live under this monopolistic power provider.

Mobisun lets you buy solar gear with XMR, but their biggest setup tops out at 600W. For running a bunch of miners you'd want a full solar roof.
