It ultimately depends on the actions of the banking system. Saving the dollar means a deflationary depression and complete collapse of everything including imports, jobs, taxes, welfare, insurance etc. This is a terrifying prospect. I think the banks will ultimately try to slow-roll inflation to keep things going and hopefully ease us into the pain. I think the chance of banks freezing up and shutting down temporarily is a given. I think we'll all get our cash but the purchasing power of it is likely to be nil. The system is effectively dead, and the dollar ultimately needs to be replaced. I think all countries want the dollar replaced as well and are actively looking for work-arounds to dollar hegemony. This is on no certain timeline, as well. It could carry on like this for years if we have cooperation of foreign nations. But it could also collapse quite suddenly if someone big runs for the door. I am extremely pessimistic, and I don't use the terms "ponzi scheme" lightly. All of the problems characterized by current events are summed up succinctly as thus: Shortfall of capital. We have replaced real capita. & savings with leverage and liquidity. The only play is to buy up real assets, real businesses and own plenty of guns and food while we wait for the inevitable. Sounds spooky, and it is. Most normies will have their necks snapped from the whiplash caused by their normalcy bias. Simply buying a house and earning a small fortune is impossible without leverage. Simply owning stocks that procure you a living wage doing nothing is impossible without an insane influx of cheap labor and resources. Without savings, and so little reinvestment in our manufacturing and infrastructure, we are all collectively going to be tightening our belts. No magic central bank dollar tricks will be bailing us out this time.

It is causing havoc in the global markets and no one is happy about it. Eventually the system is going to break as the currencies will not be kept in the trading ranges like they are meant to. Foreign nations will be forced to bite the bullet and find a replacement at some point, as they can't keep destroying themselves to secure the dollars necessary to buy/sell on the global market. This could be very bad for us because it means at some point we won't be able to run trade deficits to pay for our imports. Foreign nations may refuse dollars and demand our production/exportable food and industrial goods, farm equipment, machinary etc. We currently run a $700BN trade deficit annually and that is paid for with bonds/dollars. If we lose those goods, our own domestic supply of cheap consumables will cost a fuckton more than we are used to. It will be catastrophically damage our own economy as many business models depend on cheap imports, and all of those jobs, taxes, etc will be failing at the margin.
What we are seeing here is the upward slope of the exponential function as it runs away. The global credit market is in chaos and without central banks buying up toxic paper no one wants the whole leveraged game could come tumbling down. There is no moment where we will "catch our breath" and get another few years of calm. This is it. This is the storm. The world has made it clear that they are moving away from the U.S. in a big way. And all of the leveraged benefits Americans have enjoyed will be disappearing as things eventually normalize.
My grandparents used to only eat out like once every 4 months. Grandparents used to wash their aluminum foil. My parents first house was purchased at 14% interest. No one alive, not even the boomers intimately know what a normal economy looks like. And to top it off, most Americans are broke. Hyperinflation appears to be all but a certainty at some point down the line.

The bond market is not supposed to be moving that dramatically. They had no choice but to step in.
This is like teaching a young child to ride a bike, where the second you take your hands off the bars the kid just tips over. That is the state of the debt market around the globe. Last time I checked it was over $125TN in size.
All of this debt has to be paid back or eaten as losses. And this debt is tucked away and hidden all throughout our economy and we are all exposed to it. Insurance, real estate, pensions, the stock market, Social Security, health care, imports, energy, jobs, taxes, government spending. All of it. everything. If you think you are owed something, prepare to get nothing as a worst case scenario. The paper claims are impossible to be covered with real world goods and services. Hence why you keep your wealth stored in real value under your mattress and you nail your furniture to the ground. Probably twenty different people think they own your kitchen table, and EVERYONE is going to be looking around for the fuck who robbed them of their comfy lifestyle. You'll be lucky to find your retired mother a part time job at Wal Mart when shit hits the fan. You won't even have McDonalds as a backstop to give you a job if you are in need. Everyone will be out of work when the service economy stalls out from no more cheap imports.

As alarmist as this sounds, think about the reality of an economy doing nothing but consuming and never reinvesting into itself. It is as dire of a situation as being on a desert island and partying away while your stores of food and water dwindle down to nothing. We are going to be rebuilding from scratch and that rebuilding process is going to be a function of savings, production, farming and mining and exporting. The leveraged games were nothing more than the facilitator of profiting from financing consumption - made possible only by the world's demand for dollars and the world literally reinvesting their dollars back into our domestic economy to spend. All we have to show for it is a mountain of debt. We do not have infrastructure projects, warehouses, manufacturing plants, boundless high paying jobs. We all bought overpriced cars and houses, fast food, craft beer, enterntainment, movies. None of it will help us one bit in the future as all of our supposed wealth was subsidized by the third world. And we are still very much dependent on them to cover the shortfalls in our own economy, despite being one of the largest in the world. The service economy has plenty of room to collapse.

Can someone confirm with me the taxation rules for gold in the usa? I know you can't buy more than 10 grand a day without it being reported to the irs, but apparently there's no need to report sales to the IRS if you are selling American eagles and a couple others?
Will most gold buyers keep paper in case they get audited? Is the true way to avoid IRS simply to sell the individuals person to person?

Yeah it's been quite astonishing, we're living in historic times. I wish I could sufficiently understand and reliably predict how it will unfold but I often just get dazzled by the fundamental fakeness of the whole system.

>You won't even have McDonalds as a backstop to give you a job if you are in need. Everyone will be out of work when the service economy stalls out from no more cheap imports.

I appreciate your analysis and perspective greenspanbro, all I feel comfortable doing is trusting my gut and accumulating food, tools, supplies and PMs. I'm good at gardening and foraging but have no idea how bad it will get for the average person and what kind of risk they'll pose to my family, I have the means but don't want to put in the situation of having to use lethal force in our defense, I hope it doesn't get that bad.

Much like the Great Depression, not every area will be hit the same. A location in the Midwest, near plenty of food, lots of industry, international corporations etc will do far better than a city like Pheonix, AZ that is in a desert propped up by a property bubble. Make sense? Remember that America is still an economic powerhouse and we will all survive this, but not every region is the same. Just like every job is not productive. You should be able to gauge these things beforehand and determine how much pain you may/may not endure.

Not quite like 2021 where dealers were shutting down over the weekends etc. But the physical market is definitely telling us that it can't handle prices going much lower.

I have an education in materials science and physics. I actually do know what im talking about.

If the spring is fully compressed and its not perfectly made or engineered, leaving such a compression for months will in fact degrade the spring because it is compressed (bent) beyond the linear elastic threshold of the material at least somewhere along the length of the spring.

Gold was "undervalued" pre 1971 which is why the system broke and the gold standard was forced to be abandoned.

Gold then skyrocketed under the free market, after which the market was locked down in an attempt to ensure that gold's soaring value didn't demoralize fiat users.

In modern history gold only had a true free market for a short time after 1971.

But there is.
Customer sales to dealers of certain precious metals exceeding specific quantities call for reporting to the IRS on 1099B forms. The 1099B forms are similar to other 1099 forms taxpayers commonly receive; the “B” means they have been issued by a business other than a financial entity.

Reportable sales (again, customer sales to dealers) apply to 1-oz Gold Maple Leafs, 1-oz Krugerrands, and 1-oz Mexican Onzas in quantities of twenty-five or more in one transaction. Reporting requirements do not apply to American Gold Eagles, no matter the quantities. Furthermore, reporting requirements do not apply to any fractional ounce gold coins.

theyre just exempt from reporting, according to irs you still owe the tax no matter what coin.

if it matters to not report so you can not pay the irs the tax and hope to not get caught, then okay

I mean, I could be wrong, but I would expect the auction house would test them in some way, or have a resident numismatician verify them or something. I'm pretty sure they make commisions based on a percentage of the total sale, and advertising them as "pre-33 gold coins" would attract more potential buyers and fetch a higher price than just saying "here we have some coins that look old." Those do look like they're in pretty good condition to me, so their fair market value may be a good bit higher than just melt, so they probably won't be priced great if your goal is stacking weight. Personally, the only pre-33 piece I have is far and away my favorite gold, so it may be worth it to you anyway. Either way, it sounds like you've got a lot of research to do before you can safely make a good decision on the price you would be willing to pay.

Still the lesson. If you spend over 10,000 your bank will still have to do "due diligence" which may include contacting the authorities to report "suspicious legal activity". Arabs are known to use gold to fund their illegal activities and the FBI likes to be aware of large gold purchases.

you know i ve heard the term before, "black diamonds" always meant anthracite coal because it was shiny and hard. I have no idea what the term could mean, unless your discussing a specific region? The name "Black Diamond" comes up all over the old west and Pacific Slope, but no ones sure where it was originally generated.

There are black diamonds that are found in pegmatites and other formations but there usually isnt anything interesting about them, though Carbonado as its often called has made a come back in the gem world recently.

Don't quote me on this, but I think eligible means it can actually be delivered, and registered means it could potentially become eligible. (Maybe the other way around.)
Either way, I'm not convinced the numbers are significant, honestly. I remember a lot of extra eligible ounces suddenly popping up during periods of rising spot prices. Most of the silver supposedly held in the Comex is allocated to the ETF's, the biggest of which is JPMorgan's SLV, so it's hard for me to believe any of it.
Additionally, I think most of the drawdown lately can be attributed to decreasing ETF demand, and it's hard for me to interpret falling investor demand as a bullish signal, at least in the short term. However, maybe it means ETF investors are transitioning to physical, which is probably the only way to get true price discovery. Maybe it's a sign that silver is about to pop off, but I think it's more likely that we won't get any signs from the published silver market numbers before it really happens.

For the Aussie anons: can confirm bullionmark.com.Au is legit and seems to have links to the Queensland mint (they sell a lot of qmint.com stock) and the Perth Mint (my 1kg QMint bar i ordered is actually stamped Perth Mint).
They’re a little slow, if you want fast delivery only pick items that are ‘in stock’ not ‘available to order’. But their Qmint 1oz silver crowns and 1oz OPM ingots are as close as I’ve found to bullion prices with decent supply.

new to pmg in general, have some questions before I pull the trigger on some.

1. Im scoping APMEX as a us buyer. I'm looking for silver in 1oz denoms. Why does the price of coins vs bars of different types vary so much? is it just the looks? or are there intrinsic value in having certain stamps vs others?

2. Does the plastic / tubes keep it from getting tarnished or something?

3. where do folks get those odd prints like meme runs or that cool scrooge "keep stacking" bar?

4. Are APMEX and JPBullion the best/trustworthy for US buyer?

5. are those goldbacks actually useful in terms of value? or just a gimmicky collectors item?

6. aside from the tubes, any best practices on storing silver? (seen comfy wooden boxes or vacuum seals in these threads).

7. if the world ever devolved to trading silver, gold, wouldn't having pure coins vs junk be ideal? seems so hard to estimate value for junk status coins.

Appreciate the help if anyone can answer

drop the reddit spacing, also it's /pmg/
1. anything over spot is design, might be the mint, might be the seller, in the end 1oz is 1oz. Numismatics play a role, but not as much with silver as long as it's not historical money
2. Tarnish occurs when sulfur reaches the silver (i.e. farts, egg etc.), albeit slowly. The plastic mostly protects from scratches. It's seen as optional as you can remove the tarnish easily
3./4. I am a Yuropoor and will skip these
5. very high premiums, the concept is interesting but there is high cost involved in producing them compared to the value.
6. whatever you like, really. storing them in wooden boxes you might need to watch out not to let the silver touch the wood directly (sulphuric molecules are biological and will be in wood in trace amounts). if you need security, consider a safe or hiding the stuff well.
7. you don't have to estimate junk value, because you usually know it. If I buy junk, I do it when I know the precise silver content. 5 Reichsmark from here is .900 Silver for instance, 2 Reichsmark is .675 etc. Burgers know what their Mercs are worth (1 Blowjob precisely)

hello new/fren/ Ironically, sometimes Walmart sells APMEX stuff cheaper than APMEX. be sure to always look around to get the best deal and dont forget to max your benefits with rewards CCs, points and cashback apps, etc..

JM Bullion and Provident Metals are the same company, SD Bullion is a very religious PM seller, SilverGoldBull has great sales.
Goldbacks are novelty items. the premium is pretty much 100% spot of gold.

Think I picked up some of the last available tubes of 2022 Brits, showing no longer available from the Royal mint. Think the Yale of Beufort's might appreciate well given they're among the few 2023 coins with Lizzie on.
Got a few more on the way, shame that one gets raped for 20% VAT on silver in Bongistan.

Bond markets dumping, my country has 130% of its GDP in pensions held in vulnerable superannuation funds. Should I buy more silver or hold some cash in case and try to get some cheap positions in the stock market in the carnage? Will there even be one?

>> No.51717412

>>51717323
The bonds represent a massive shortfall of capital. People will be selling the fuck out of stocks to make up for the losses of wealth they thought they had. There is a chance of some sort of "melt up" depending on where you live, no one really knows how this will play out. Maybe not even the central bankers. I keep very shallow positions of stocks that I think will survive, are necessary, and no more than $1000 allocated to any single stock as anticipate them losing value in real terms. It is a dumb thing to go against my gut on this one as everyone in the world is sort of shepherded into the stock market. And if the GME saga has anything to show us, it's that the stock market is hopelessly corrupt.
Remember, the DOW has been 1:1 with gold twice in U.S. history. That will be the trade and a good marker to use as to when is a good time to sell.
I personally do not plan on selling anything until the bond market is dealt with in a substantial way. At no point should you be selling anything until that threat is neutralized, and written off somehow. That is my opinion for now, at least.

I tend to agree. I keep very shallow positions in some stocks that I look at daily and wonder why I shouldn't liquidate them all now and buy PMs. Earning a measely dividend is nice but it is literal chump change compared to what can be lost. I keep mining stocks just because the payoff could be well worth the risk.
I still think that the U.S. could actually land on its feet somehow and that the evil leaders of this nation will be able to steer the ship so that most of the fallout lands on someone else. I think they do have an instinct to keep themselves alive and the desperate need to keep the markets afloat given how many people depend on it for the livelihood means that they will try their best not to see it go to zero. I have no idea if they will be able to do that, so I cautiously keep my toe dipped in the pond.
Much to think about, for sure. I am seriously torn but I try to not get carried away with "dollar collapse imminent/hyperinflation tomorrow" worldviews. Good way to hedge your dividend portfolios is to spend that cash on PMs and not reinvest it.

It is I, silver reality anon, come back to beat down the ping-test boomers with facts once again.
Here I present to you the SPX/gold chart.
Gold didn't move at all until AFTER the fucking S&P had bottomed out
Any ping-test boomers pressuring you into buying silver this early is BULLSHITTING YOU

Why is this example relevant? This is the only other time when gold had true price discovery take place.
Until the ping-test boomers explain why things are different this time, just fucking laugh at them, they're a fucking laughing stock.

Yes, you should buy silver but buy in a way that you don't fucking lose 50% of your wealth in doing so. And certainly don't go all-in like these morons.

I will repost this as many times as I need to in silver threads. Show these fucking idiots this chart which they will never have a reply to each time they try and con you into buying silver early.

Now go ahead and start calling me a kike, glowie, troll whatever.
