Welcome fans and speculators of shiny cardboard and nostalgia, this it the /TCG/ and collectibles general on biz. Pokemon, MtG, Yugioh, Metazoo, Digimon, Video Games, etc

What have you been buying? What trends do you see in the next 5-10 years? Personally, I am stacking WOTC-era, first-edition Pokemon slabs and I have recently gotten into Metazoo. Retro video games are also a top-tier alternative investment, IMO.
> Is MtG dying?

> Has Pokemon peaked?

> Any new TCG's or collectibles that you are focusing on? Personally, I am really into Metazoo and believe it has a solid future.

>> No.51621456

Soiboys into this stuff have already peaked in their careers when you consider their average age and more importantly they will all drop dead from the fagcines soon leading to a huge increase in supply.

Youtubers were willing to pay for content and deduct the expense. So they bought unopened cases of cards for hundreds of thousands of dollars to make content. The cards are worthless. The content had value. Retro games are similar. Retro content has value and the expense is deductible. If you buy collectibles you are rekt.

Slow morning on Biz. I've noticed this thread picks up in the afternoon when the degenerates wake up.

Sure, the content is valuable. However, the collectibles themselves are obviously valuable as well. Have you ever gone into a shop dedicated to Pokemon? It's crazy. I went to one yesterday and it was full of kids, people in their 20's, people in their 30's...

Guess I'll post my gamebook stack here too. I bought these from ebay over 10 years ago in big lots of books (came out to $1.50 or less per book). I managed to get all the earlier Fighting Fantasy gamebooks, except House of Hell. I kinda dropped out of ebay after they started raising fees, and I guess now these books cost a lot more, so I'm not going to get back into collecting them anytime soon.
I never really got into M:TG or other cards. Bought a single pack of M:TG when they came out around 1994, but even though I liked the art, the game itself didn't interest me. I was into tabletop RPGs at the time, specifically AD&D, but sometimes we also tried other games like d6 Star Wars, GURPS, Call of Cthulhu.

>> No.51622508

Don't know about the vintage stuff, but Pokemon purchased a printing factory a few months ago. They can reprint literally any modern sets to death and ruin all the scalpers. There's already a second wave coming for the Charizard UPC that got sold out instantly and can probably go on much longer.

Doesn't matter. There are fakes on par with the real ones now or better, chances are alot of yours are fake and you have no idea. Just because you think you're a pro collector doesn't mean you aren't filled with fake shit. I have a set of 1st edition WOTC holos, they're 100% the same as originals including the texture and smell. This is a dying hobby simply because of this, and once the deep fakes are rampant the company will begin diluting old sets and re-releasing.

Sorry kids.

I'd say its worth the risk. First printed sets usually do very well for any TCG. Don't really know which language to focus on but english usually holds a higher premium for most TCGs.

The biggest draw for this TCG is the exclusive artwork produced by the people who do the manga. They are painting brand new illustrations just for the TCG.

This nami card is selling for $$350+ and is one of those exclusive illustrations. Believe or not its not even the chase card of the set.

As a seller on both it almost certainly means higher fees on tcg player. and it’s obvious tcg players acquisition of Channel Fireball was at the behest of EBay who is trying to monopolize the card selling market. Hopefully they bring $.50-$1 standard envelopes with tracking to tcg player. It’s too easy to lie on tcg and say your card never came because there’s no tracking for most cards.

That the point. Compare it to twenty years ago, ten years ago, even five years ago and it would truly astonishing.
>>51625648
It's an amazing card by historical standards. Downright unplayable in any format because it doesn't immediateoy replace itself, have haste, or have protection from counterspells/removal

6/6 for 5, that's already a discount. Has four positive abilities. But it's unplayable in competitive, because power creep has gotten that bad.
How many 5/5 for five creatures have been rendered irrelevant due to this objectively better card. What reason is there to ever slot a green fatty in your deck that is worse than this one?
By printing this strictly better card, WotC made 100+ cards in the past strictly worse. This is the poison of power creep.
Power will continue to creep because WotC has gone to the dogs, and Maro is a silver tongued liar.
Any good card you buy today will be worth less and less in the future, not just because they get power creeped by new variations, but also because the vast majority of players don't want to have to replace half their deck every block just to compete.

Comic flipper here. I dont hop on /biz/ that often but its Super cool to see a thread like this so i'll provide some insights

Yes, TCGS, sports cards, all collectibles are basically dead right now.

>why?

Well to understand that, you gotta understand why collectibles make for a decent way to store capital. They perform a little like stocks except they have an insanely low float. There usually is never a ton of one collectible available for sale at any point in time. So even small gains in demand can cause the price to rise dramatically.

The other secret to success is that these things are easy to store, easy to hold and they often have emotional components to them. You don't see a lot of AF15's floating around because people WANT to own spiderman's first appearance. which acts sort of like a gas pedal on the price of a book like that.

Right now the collectible markets sobered up and realized that they are MASSIVELY overcapitalized. Things are just worth way too goddamn much. So now the prices are theoretically falling. I say theoretically because it takes volume of sale to "price in" an adjustment. Stocks are easy because there are thousands of transactions a day for most stocks. people make money long and short so there is a lot of incentive to buy and sell all over the place.

Collectibles don't have that. Negative changes in price bring the volume of sales down, which means that it takes longer for the market to adjust and adapt to negative price adjustments. People have to die/get sick, collections need to be liquidated, etc.

The forecast? A lot of crabbing as these low volume markets bleeds their excess capitalization at a snails pace plus the usual downturn in activity that you see during recessions. Assume these shitty lowball offers you've been getting won't seem to be so bad a year from now.

Have fun in casual magic while you can.
Maybe get a friend into it and face off with cheap $6 meme decks you build from a commons bin
Also, once you start to learn how the game is played, I highly recommend playing Shandalar. It's a single player mtg game where you wander around with your deck and face off creatures to get more cards and gold. It's a broken, buggy piece of shit, but it lets you play mtg like it was back in the day, meaning power nine, strip mine, black vise, mishras factory, ancestral recall. And then you'll laugh when your shit gets pushed in by a scryb sprite with divine transformation enchanted on it

Hearthstone illustrated years ago that physical card games were not going to be around for much longer. Digital card games are overall a better product and they have the ability to do things that physical card games cant do (like randomly generate a card that is not in either players decks). At this point we're just waiting for the game to emerge that really illustrates just how much better a fully digital experience can actually be.

MetaZoo is the next Pokemom; Flesh and Blood is the next Magic the Gathering.

Both are great to play and collect. I don't believe MTG will die however WOTC has the game on a downward slope.

Meanwhile Pokémon is just played out at this point.

I have a 50k collection of tcg products. I enjoy the hobby.

I recommend all anons who want to jump in purchase Kickstarter MetaZoo cards; and Welcome to Rathe Alpha (first edition) Flesh and Blood cards.

Feel free to ask questions and I will provide further guidance. Would love more anons to jump into the hobby. It's amazingly fun and can be profitable.

MetaZoo you can play on TTS (Table Top Simulator) but you need you get into a mz server to find matches which can be annoying. MZ is planning to create an official tcg client on par with mtgarena here soon.

There is a new online site to play flesh and blood called Talishar.net
The ui is pretty clunky but the site is otherwise functional and I'm able to find marches at any hour of the day.

FYI, I've been Mythic in Mtg Arena. Don't waste your time on that game. FAB and MZ are light-years better.

Your entire take is awful. Collectibles are essentially high risk assets and volatile in nature. The vast majority of investible assets became bear markets in the last year and collectibles were no exception.

The only point you were correct on is wild spice swings can occur based on relatively low volume. Collectible portfolios will return juicy multipliers during the next bull market.

MetaZoo KickStarter cards are essentially first edition Pokémon cards, except even rarer. The only way to acquire the KS cards at release was to fund MetaZoo from its initial KickStarter Campaign that ended in the summer of 2020 iirc.

Here is a link where you can find more relevant information:

The TCG ship has sailed. Any game without an established market already is doomed, especially now that most of the tcg community is already invested in their games of choice.

The tcg field is feeble and great companies will fail simply because the current market state is bad and their timing was off.

It also doesn't help that numerous kickstarter tcgs have outright scammed their founders and big stories have dropped on this topic over the last few months. Even sorcery pushed back the release date of their products because they were unable to secure a contract with cartamundi on a workable timescale. Now they are having their cards printed in China and backers are pissed.

The big hitters in kickstarter will be Mothman, full holos in general, and any of the reserve list cards.

If you want the ultra rare cards, I recommend looking into red ink / blue ink/ / old scratch / and the green man.

These cards aren't from KS, but they are 1 /100 iirc and each is worth thousands.

Personally i couldn't resist and got myself few dozens of pic related. It was on sale for only 3 bux on first day, seemed too low for a card who's banking on an ability who got tons of supports lately (tokens' production) and who is a self value enabler + infinite comboer with common pieces like ashnod's altar and nadir kraken.
So far it's a good bet as the preoders are now at 6 bux min, but i fear the demand for this set will be crazy high due to the hype and i end up getting fucked.

Nice low risk-good reward position fren. Can't really go wrong with old foil basics, and now they are quite difficult to find in good condition too.
I expect ppl to get fed up soon enough with all the new "special" basics jotc is sharting out almost on a weekly basis, and a nostalgia fueled revulsion for new trash will push the old pimp lands higher.

Antiques are a fantastic way to make some money, and to decorate your place and self like a gentleman with some class. I dabble a bit into this and the vintage market for profit and things to keep at the same time, honestly I multiply my money constantly off the things I buy around here. No idea why biz is avoiding this opportunity, it's literally selling items to the rich, old people, museums, and foundations for massive returns, preferring to buy things that are only selling to a few wealthier people in their 30s-40s instead of the ones that drop 5k on a ugly piece of art or a shiny piece of costume jewelry. Current latest mothman chase is the Hiroquest zombie mothman. If you are willing to take a chance on a 30-40 pack you could get one. This price I attached was an outlier most of the other recent ones have been 400-500

>Should i just buy a sealed 1st edition cryptid nation? I see them for like $500.
Kickstarter MetaZoo booster boxes will be the premium vintage product in the future imo. If you can afford it I'd recommend joining metazoo buy/sell groups and try to pick one up for around 2k - 4k. If that is out of your range the crypto nation first edition will age nicely as well. I'd compare mz cn 1e to shadowless pokemon cards.

Now tell me how the last 5 - 10 pokemon sets are fairing? The Pokémon company has the explicit right to reprint the fuck out of any modern pokemon product. In fact they already reprinted evolving skies and likely will again in the future.

That's what's great about games like metazoo and even flesh and blood. Mz announces upfront what their print runs will be then the set is out of print; and flesh and blood announces when a set is out of print.

Meanwhile the higher any modern pokemon goes the more likely it will be reprinted.

>> No.51660621 [DELETED]

False the set will go out of rotation in a couple of years, the last reprint got eaten like a whale eating plankton and you have no clue what you are talking about. They are not going to reprint Astral Radiance, Brilliant Stars or Evo Skies or fuck probably even Chilling Pain so much that holding a box for 5-10 years wont be a GURANTEED 2-3x in value if not more. Go look at sun and moon set, sure base sun and moon is only at around 250-300 per box but team up is going for EASILY 1k a box because it is so popular a set and NO they will not be reprinting it because the era is OVER

>False the set will go out of rotation in a couple of years,
And the Pokémon Company reserves the right to reprint anything at their discretion

>They are not going to reprint Astral Radiance, Brilliant Stars or Evo Skies
They already have reprinted these sets and if market conditions were better and these sets were increasing in a noticeable way they would be reprinted even more.

>Go look at sun and moon set, sure base sun and moon is only at around 250-300 per box but team up is going for EASILY 1k a box because it is so popular a set and NO they will not be reprinting it because the era is OVER
Your problem is you are only focusing on the 1 or 2 sets that are doing well over the last 20 - 30 sets that were printed in the same timeline.

Modern Pokemom is a dogshit investment and aside from 1 of 2 cards per set, the newer cards are all generic and soulless. Most of the tcg whales abandoned pokemon because there are better games with more upside available nowadays.

Moderns barrier to entry is so much lower and, depending on the product, has so much potential for growth.

Japan modern is what I'm heavily invested in. For example the eevee heroes gym set was going for about $250 when it first came out last year. Now you are hard pressed to find one under $650.

Even sets like tag Allstars, which is only a couple years old, have seen 300% + growth.

good investment

most of the full holos here are collectable, good hold

the whole set is underrated, people need to stock up on it
>Wilderness
not a good set. too big a print run, only one good card that sells for $70 in the whole set
>UFO
still not too great but not as bad as wilderness

all promos and limited items are definitely worth collecting.

Sorcery:contested realms is going to be a big hit I feel, it looks tight.
The Disney TCG might be good if its done right but who knows.

I would highly rec keeping an eye on Magicast mothman if you can. Print run was between 5-10k roughly with 5 packs per box and the price has held steady since release. Another good one is the Nightfall mothman which is steady 40-60 on ebay. I recently picked up a RH mothman for 50 bucks, now is the time to scoop them cheap. Avoid CN2 for now unless you buy the boxes sealed it isn't worth holding the singles.

Less than 1% of pokemon products/cards have any real value. Opening pokemon booster boxes is almost always disastrous from an ev perspective. The chance of earning a positive return on cracking pokemon products is exceedingly rare. Even the pokemon youtubers that open pokemon sealed everyday point this out. It's no secret. I don't think you're being very persuasive pointing out the 1 cards/products that are desirable out of 100 products that are worthless. If pokemon is your thing then that's fine but holding any of the modern stuff is extremely risky, especially after the pokemon company announced they printed BILLIONS of pokemon cards throughout the covid Era.

>Hey Anon, I just looked at MetaZoo and it looks pretty cool, I want in. Any advice for someone starting out on what packs to buy?

If you want to play metazoo, id recommend getting the dingbelle cn2 themedeck to start, and perhaps a booster box of each metazoo set.

You may want to checkout websites such as the castersociety.com in order to get ideas concerning what decks you could build.

The next metazoo set: seance is going to introduce dual auras. This will disrupt the mz meta significantly as there are 10 different auras which can be blended together.

As it stands the Metazoo 2023 Casters Cup (basically the world championship) is planning 1.25million in prize support. $500,000 going to the first place winner alone.

No other tcgs offer anything close to these amounts and the plan is to increase the prize pool each year. The team at metazoo is aiming for global reach and plans to be around for decades.

Anyways, if you're asking what product to buy you can't go wrong with cryptid nation 1, cryptid nation 2, and nightfall. Those are the first two sets, and both are out of print.

No but if you are careful with picking your sets you can do very well and if the set has a lot of alt hits like evo skies it stands to reason it will do well in the long term. Again I am talking about holding sealed product over a 5-10 year term.

I get your point about modern being highly reprinted but you guys are forgetting the card inflation to pull these rare cards too. You would need on average to rip almost 2k packs to guarantee a moonbreon hit. The ratio for vintage packs was 1/10 of that. It's okay to not think modern is a good investment but when there is clear evidence certain sets have performed well and now out of print sets have continued to rise you are just arguing with a brick wall

I am looking to buy Nightfall box next. Already bought Wilderness since it was very cheap. I don't know if MZ is 'top dog' in the sense of sales, popularity, etc, but I do have a good feeling about it's future. Go look at the Metazoo IG page and check their story if you have doubts of people playing/caring about the game.

A dude that quit his financial job to sell cards and now makes YouTube videos on card investments. Because he has an actual financial background his videos are actually pretty good and I think he's the biggest channel for that kind of thing. His main focus is Magic but he does a little bit of everything and basically MetaZoo reached out to him and somehow convinced him to support them so now all of the people that follow Rudy are now also buying MetaZoo because he's shilling it. >>51684942
>Is this Metazoo shit gonna give me AIDS, or will this be another dead TCG in a year?
MetaZoo has a 20 year plan. The game will release in ' 2-3 year blocs' each depicting cryptids native to a particular region of the world. For instance, the 1st bloc is called Cryptid Nation, and focuses on the cryptids of North America. The 2nd bloc will be called Yokai Island, and will focus on cryptids native to Japan and Asia. The 3rd bloc with be Grimm's Kingdom, and will focus on European cryptids. And so on...

What's most important about MetaZoo is it is NOT just a card game. The creators plan for it to have an IP similar to Pokemon. There are already comics, characters, a story, books, and a Netflix series in production. The team at MZ is truly shooting for the moon.

>>51686306
>Checked. Where are some good sites to hunt for deals? Is eBay a good place?
There have been amazing deals on eBay recently if you keep an eye on auctions ending soon. You can also purchase on TCGplayer. However some of the best deals are found in MetaZoo Marketplace groups on FB and Discord. I've done hundreds of deals through these venues and have yet to been 100% ripped off, but I have had issues with orders and had to send stuff back on occasion. Just make sure you properly vet whoever you're dealing with if you decide to go through these channels.

This year I got into pegging against inflation somehow, so I've been selling some cards. My old collection I accumulated in the 2000's was stored at me mum's and never moved, so tons of classical cards, over 200 rares, but also all kinds of conditions because kids are fucking retarded.
Recently, sales have dropped sharply. When I'd get 2-3 requests for pictures a week for the first 2-3 months of selling, right now I have been without even a message for over 2 months.

>Has Pokemon peaked?
Definitely not, I think people just have better financial decisions to make right now than buying cardboard, and those who STILL are blissfully unaware of world events and buy cards probably go for pristine quality.
