Hello fellow /biz/raelis, I'm trying to start a small urban farm and grow oyster mushrooms. What are some troubles I could run up to in the immediate future?

It's not a bad business, but early on you WILL lose crops to other microorganisms attacking your poor little fungi. It's part of the learning curve. Keep in mind that no, when bad microorganisms get in the mushrooms aren't salvageable and neither is the mycelium. The rot that's visible to the eye is overshadowed by all the stuff you can't see.

Would buying already colonized bags and putting them in growth tents a good business strategy? I've fucked around with mycology before but I don't feel ready yet to build it all from scratch (petri dish-->grainspawn-->bulk substrate-->fruiting stage).
Also so far the only good substrate at hand would be coco coir and without supplementation I've read it's biological efficiency would be around 40% which sucks ass.

>> No.51648869

Hit up as many farmers markets as you can provide for, those are the cash cows and you charge much more there than anywhere else.

and of course buy the materials (substrate, bags, etc) in bulk, like get a pallet delivered to a freight terminal and pick it up yourself.

>>51648810
>Would buying already colonized bags and putting them in growth tents a good business strategy?
It's a good way to start and guage the viability of the business without investing too much, but it's going to totally eat up your margins. you can also just buy spawn so the process would instead be bulk substrate-->fruiting stage. buying spawn is often a very, very good business move.

>Also so far the only good substrate at hand would be coco coir and without supplementation I've read it's biological efficiency would be around 40% which sucks ass.
...most gourmets won't fruit on coco coir alone, they are wood eating species. you need hardwood sawdust pellets or some sort of straw

If profit is my main concern then it's all good. Im basically sourcing the colonized bags from a farmer who also found me a cheap ass transport to get it where I am.
>you can also just buy spawn so the process would instead be bulk substrate-->fruiting stage. buying spawn is often a very, very good business move.
As soon as I get some extra cash I'll do this. Thanks for the advice.
>most gourmets won't fruit on coco coir alone
Damn, really? I've seen some substrate mixes on the internet with coco coir and vermiculite. Have you ever tried it?
>>51648943

It's extremely cheap where I live, I think even more than straw. Remember, tropical country

>As soon as I get some extra cash I'll do this. Thanks for the advice.
it would mean you'd need to build a steamer drum or so to steam sterilize your substrate too, but with coco coir alone this wouldn't be necessary at all. if you start supplementing it though it likely would be. mixing spawn and coir is dead simple though, so depending on spawn prices you might want to look into that soon.

>Damn, really? I've seen some substrate mixes on the internet with coco coir and vermiculite. Have you ever tried it?
no, and i might've been wrong, I've just never seen anyone fruiting anything but king oysters on coir, and usually that's just used as a casing layer. reading further it seems like it'd totally work, and to increase yield / BE you could always supplement with some other cheap, nutritious inputs. i've just only ever used straw and supplemented hardwood pellets, which is the standard here in the states.

>> No.51649120

and it's really cheap and easy to build the steam drum too btw, just a 55gal drum, heating element and a float valve.

Selling them. Seriously, who the fuck are you going to sell them to? You think you can just show up at a fucking farmers market and say, "Hey, buy my mushrooms." And make enough money to live on? hes confusing oysters with psilocybin mushrooms, the latter use coir/verm.

yeah i know, but i searched it for oysters specifically and did find people having success with it.. i've just never heard about it until now, but in a tropical country with cheap coir it might work well, especially if supplemented.

>you can cut your sub with cardboard, they love cardboard.
i use standard masters mix, hardwood and basedhull pellets. it's automation friendly in pellet form and sourcing/processing cardboard all the time would be annoyign.

>are you growing in bags or buckets?
>how big is your grow room
i grow in bags, in a 5'x9' grow tent. it can fit up to 300 bags in at a time, so around 360lbs per week to ten days. i haven't maxed it out yet though but we just found a wholesale buyer who said he'll buy everything we can grow all winter long, so im working toward that rn. also have a space im considering renting that would be a 500sq ft fruiting room.

>how much are you making a month?
maybe
i make about $300/market, and have maybe another $50 in side sales per week (so about 300 profit/week). it's my first year, and next year I intend to hit up 5+ markets a week along with pursuing wholesale buyers to start making some decent money.

any luck selling dried oysters? what do you do with spoiled product? if I recall, oysters are only fresh for about a week after harvesting

I only recently figured out (after extensive back and forth with the state) that I can sell dehydrated product without a commercial kitchen and separate licensing. i wish i had known that earlier, cuz in May-June I was throwing away like 30 gallon trash bins worth of product that didn't sell. since then, we moved to a bigger market though and dialed things down a tad, and now we essentially sell out every week or come close enough to it. if you store them well you can get 2 weeks of them still looking sellable ime. i find paper bags dry them out pretty bad.

we have in an with one store, just have to bug the produce lady more (she's lazy). we were in another store for a minute, but they haven't contacted me again in some time despite expressing big interest. im gonna give them a call next month and hopefully work something out. next month is the last market month for us, so im gonna be calling up a lot of stores. even Winco said they can't buy enough rght now, so they may take any excess blue oysters we grow.. hopefully.

usually around 8-10 hours, including time at the market. if we grow more, we don't have to spend much more time either (aside from time at the markets, which we can eventually hire out for).

yeah it's not much, but like i said it's our first year, our first real big market was in august. im pretty sure next year we'll kill it, there's a lot of undisputed turf around me and we're making good connections every week. like that one guy who said he'll buy everything we can grow all winter, which would be at least 5k a month.

Whats the licensing and permitting process been like? I assume the first step is to form an LLC. I know that food has to be packaged in a commercial kitchen (which you can rent by the hour). But what about the grow space? Any permits required there?
What variety of oysters are growing? If I had to pick three, I was thinking pink, pearl and kings would be a good place to start

In my state, there's a farm direct that enables me to run without a license of any kind, I haven't even made an LLC or anything yet. But yeah, if I want to start packaging the stuff for grocery stores, it will require a commercial kitchen, but so far the two stores I've been at haven't asked for anything more than liability insurance.

>variety of oysters are growing
Kings, black pearl kings (king/blue hybrid), blue oysters, elm oysters, yellow and pinks, but the pinks don't do good in the winter and I'm not sure how the yellows will do. We also do lions mane, and will soon have chestnuts and reishi, maybe beech, maitake and enoki too. But for the winter, when we don't need 'booth appeal', I think we're gonna switch to mostly blue oysters, black pearls and kings so the wholesale volume works out better (big stores like Safeway etc don't tend to stock the more exotic stuff).

And one thing we're gonna next month too is set up an online store, for grow kits and lions mane / reishi supplements.

not a bad idea. you can sell on ebay/amazon. you can sell pre-poured agar plates on ebay, maybe even some LC syringes. selling LC looks pretty profitable if we're talking $10 for a syringe.
in a year or two I hope to be in your position. I'm still building the capital required to buy or build some kind of facility
