OP here is a trick to never fuck up currencies again
USD/CNY = how many yuan does it take to buy 1 dollar
or
USD/EUR = how many Euros does it take to buy 1 dollar
the one that is listed first in the pair is the one that is being bought, using the currency listed second
eg.
JPY/AUD = how many Australian dollars does it take to buy 1 yen
understanding this, your chart shows USD/CNY
how many yuan to buy 1 dollar
this is increasing - it requires more yuan to buy 1 dollar
this means yuan is losing value, and the dollar is gaining value - if it used to cost 6.98 yuan to buy 1 dollar, now they have to pay 7.16 to buy 1 dollar - they have to pay more yuan to receive the same 1 dollar = yuan is worth less than before
