As others have said it depends on the kind of crash and how hard the crash is. A hard "Doomsday" would probably mean only small amounts of PMs would be useful because most people would be dead or hostile.

It's also worth noting though that metals like Palladium will become effectively worthless in any kind of hard crash, but will probably rise in value in a soft crash.

Also, if you can justify PMs for crash scenarios, you can probably also justify real estate. Not the jointly-owned bullshit you never see or step foot on, but something you live on, should certainly come in handy.

I say all this but I have a stack of my own and will continue to grow it, I'm just being realistic and adding thoughts. In most crash scenarios, but not all, more=better

USD isn't as good as Gold, but it's better for preserving cash that you plan to use in the short term. Banks, pawn shops and jewlers will not give you anywhere near market value. And banks may refuse you if your gold has not been certified.

I prefer miners because I can convert my shares to cash easily, and still benefit from price gains.

Exactly the same with PMS and pretty much anything else. Dealers need a wider spread between their buying and selling price than individuals so they can stay in business (rent, taxes, wages for employees, etc.).

When you say somebody will not give you "market value", you are showing some misunderstanding of what that phrase means. Spot price is NOT market value. Repeat that fifty times. If people are willing to sell at X dollars, THAT is the market price whether you like it or not and without regard to the "spot" price.

That price is higher than what we pay for sovs in the UK so it's reasonable compared to fractional gold. You are lucky you can take advantage of VAT free silver in Australia. The premiums on fractional gold is pretty high, so in your case it wouldn't be a bad idea to go all in on silver.
The cost to mine silver is close to it's current spot price, whereas the cost of mining gold is around USD900 per ounce.
I would say that if you are planning to hold for a very long time then why not get a bit of gold even 1/10 of an ounce, however if you are looking for a return then silver sounds right at the moment.

packaging can be bulky, cumbersome and space consuming, depending on your storage space and transport capacity if/when moving.
packaging will keep your PMs safe and clean and like new. but you wont get the satisfaction of fondling them or clanking them together

you could keep some in the packaging and have a few naked ones for fondling, completely up to your own needs and tastes. either way is potentially fine.

if selling later, keep in mind some buyers may see more value or authenticity in bullion pieces that are still in the original protective packaging. but i wouldn't count on it. most retail coin/PM dealers who buy PMs from private sellers, will give you spot price at best and wont matter if its in the packaging or not

some of my bullion has developed a natural patina on the surface from being exposed and handled. most of it has not, at least yet.
