I still don’t buy fully that the Fed won’t get cold feet and go back to lower interest rates at some point.
But if they do it, and raise rates more, they know what they’re doing and it’s on purpose.
Normies won’t immediately regret not having gold and silver in the initial rush for liquidity that results in a sell off - which will be a massive buy signal for us - but they will regret it within one or two years when, just like in 2008, gold and silver explode to new heights.

I think all of us will have an initial "Damn, should've picked up one more tube of ___", but if you're trying your best that's all you can do.
>Are we looking at a doomsday scenario
Depends on what you mean by "doomsday". My estimate for the scenario range from Great-er Depression to a complete violent balkanization of the US.
>do you think the Fed is crashing it all on purpose?
Without a doubt they are; however, they can only play the funny money game so long. Eventually, they're going to reach a point where the economic boulder they're slow-rolling down the hill gets away from them. Then even they won't be able to stop it. This works out excellently for us, as the fragile facade on this kosher fiat scheme will be ripped away Wizard of Oz-style, and everyone will see things as they really are: fraudulent.
On a related note, perhaps we should all start investing in heavy-load rope in addition to precious metals. Pic related.

As others have said it depends on the kind of crash and how hard the crash is. A hard "Doomsday" would probably mean only small amounts of PMs would be useful because most people would be dead or hostile.

It's also worth noting though that metals like Palladium will become effectively worthless in any kind of hard crash, but will probably rise in value in a soft crash.

Also, if you can justify PMs for crash scenarios, you can probably also justify real estate. Not the jointly-owned bullshit you never see or step foot on, but something you live on, should certainly come in handy.

I say all this but I have a stack of my own and will continue to grow it, I'm just being realistic and adding thoughts. In most crash scenarios, but not all, more=better

Unironically you should. Third worlders already do this, in places like Turkey the USD is used as a hedge against the failing currency in tandem with Gold. USD isn't as good as Gold, but it's better for preserving cash that you plan to use in the short term. It's probably a good idea for Europoors to have small stacks of physical USD or CHF given that their currency will get utterly buttfucked over the winter.

How do you get the most value for your metals when you exchange them for a more liquid asset (cash)?

Banks, pawn shops and jewlers will not give you anywhere near market value. And banks may refuse you if your gold has not been certified.

I prefer miners because I can convert my shares to cash easily, and still benefit from price gains.

You can always try going to Craigslist and listing it for slightly over spot, under cutting the big dealers by a little bit in price.
But it will probably take longer to find a buyer who will trust you, while the pawn shops and coin dealers give you what they offer right this minute.

Might as well just buy gold at that point, since it doesn't have VAT and fees are minimal. And you might not have to sell it, so it'll just add to your stack.
Trading other currency for dollar and back again means you get dinged twice on conversion fees, and it's not even certain the dollar won't plunge in the meantime.

That’s a fascinating story Anon, thanks for the history lesson. Now if SHTF there’s another coin out there I will recognize. It sucks that you have to pay VAT, where I am the local constitution labels gold and silver as money so there are no taxes on them. Platinum is another matter, we have to pay tax on that. But “buying” gold and silver is considered a “monetary exchange” here, not an actual purchase, so there are no taxes on them.

This pricing is strange to me. As long as I've been aware, from any fast food place, french fries always cost much more than a cheeseburger. When did the burger:fries ratio flip? Think about, have you ever seen fries cost 50% less than a cheeseburger? A lot of places charge $2 for a cheeseburger nowadays. How do coin reprints work? I don't know anything about minting, but from what I gather, the expensive part of the whole process is manufacturing the dies, right?

Good deal. Did you get them straight from APMEX or go thru ebay or walmart? For some reason they are cheaper on ebay and Walmart than straight from APMEX.
Heres my buying method for APMEX rounds. I go thru Walmart. Cheaper than APMEX. I use my rewards Credit Card (2% cash back, pay off the balance when it hits) and I use an extension for either American Airlines (1 miles per dollar) or Honeygold (1-3% rewards). When prices swing wildly ($1.00 spikes in an hour) the website takes a while to update. i just bought 5 1oz APMEX bars last week, the bars were cheaper than the rounds @$117 per 5.

nice first buy. Get you a fondle piece. I carry a 1883 Morgan in my wallet.

You shouldn't be selling. BUT if you want to sell, think about how you would sell a car. Are you going to get the best price selling to a dealer or to a private individual? Exactly the same with PMS and pretty much anything else. Dealers need a wider spread between their buying and selling price than individuals so they can stay in business (rent, taxes, wages for employees, etc.).

When you say somebody will not give you "market value", you are showing some misunderstanding of what that phrase means. Spot price is NOT market value. Repeat that fifty times. If people are willing to sell at X dollars, THAT is the market price whether you like it or not and without regard to the "spot" price.

Tough choice. I've seen gold tumble from 1700 to 1200, and silver from 37 to 14 before.
For the singular purpose of offsetting inflation, I'd go for gold. I now buy silver when designs intrigue me, but 2500 buys an awful lot of designs.
Upshot buy a nice but inexpensive gold coin (not generic round or bar), spend the rest on silver that you like.

That price is higher than what we pay for sovs in the UK so it's reasonable compared to fractional gold. You are lucky you can take advantage of VAT free silver in Australia. The premiums on fractional gold is pretty high, so in your case it wouldn't be a bad idea to go all in on silver.
The cost to mine silver is close to it's current spot price, whereas the cost of mining gold is around USD900 per ounce.
I would say that if you are planning to hold for a very long time then why not get a bit of gold even 1/10 of an ounce, however if you are looking for a return then silver sounds right at the moment.

Welcome fren, You are in the right place!

>Planning on buying silver ounces only
Is there a reason only oz's? Why not go for a bit of fractional like 90% coins. Why spend an ounce in a SHTF situation when a silver dime or whatever would do the job?

>are there any specific conditions that I should keep them in or is it fine if I just store them somewhere safe in the package that they came in? Pic related is an example of the package.
Why only packaged rounds and not some well recognized generics? And in terms of storage if you are set on only things like you posted just put them in your safe and you will be fine.

welcome to /pmg/ anon!

packaging can be bulky, cumbersome and space consuming, depending on your storage space and transport capacity if/when moving.
packaging will keep your PMs safe and clean and like new. but you wont get the satisfaction of fondling them or clanking them together

you could keep some in the packaging and have a few naked ones for fondling, completely up to your own needs and tastes. either way is potentially fine.

if selling later, keep in mind some buyers may see more value or authenticity in bullion pieces that are still in the original protective packaging. but i wouldn't count on it. most retail coin/PM dealers who buy PMs from private sellers, will give you spot price at best and wont matter if its in the packaging or not

some of my bullion has developed a natural patina on the surface from being exposed and handled. most of it has not, at least yet.

here's what some of my Silvertowne 1oz bars came in. I don't know how much protection preservation they really would provide. its just a plastic sleeve

Depending on your country old silver coins or if they make .999 bullion coins should be pretty standard with little to no question about lagitamacy, but here in the US shit like buffalos, ASE's, Maples, APMEX bars or coins.

I've removed most of my bullion fropm the original packaging for ease of storage and ability to fondle.
I have a few 1oz bars that have started to patina after 4-5 years of being occasionally fondled then stored naked in a pile with other bullion pieces

here's a few where if you look closely, you can see a bit of discoloring around the edges. I have other pieces where the patina is even more pronounced

My1st goal was 150$ fv 90% coins, that comes out to just about 100oz of silver weight, hit that and been getting some more rounds that I like and have more numismatic value. I think my next weight focus or move will be in a little stack of bars like that.

I'm not sure at all what kinda laws your country has pertaining to PM's or importing them or what taxes me be applied to them but that is a good place to start your looking. Someone else here might know but I don't. If those bars you posted above are the only thing you can get its much better than nothing but I would also look into coin/pm shops around your area if you can. Its hard but try and find a trusted local source so you don't have to deal with things being shipped and problems that can come from that.

I've called up a few local and popular stores in my city and pretty much all of them gave me bullshit prices which left me confused and made me give up the idea of buying in cash although I like it better. From what I can tell this website (Nadir) is very reliable and that's what makes it popular, so perhaps I'll make my first purchase there and start looking at other options as I go.

however, since then they completely revamped their website and now they clearly label how much of every single item they have right on the listing and how many they have backordered. ive never seen any other bullion site do this so i think they must have had some problems with inventory and made a serious effort to not screw thst up again. also, on items that sre both in stock and backordered , you can choose to buy a backordered version for a small discount if you are willing to wait foe the backorder ship date
