They paid shit to original artists.
No new artist considers Spotify a good method to distribute their music. Some might have their tracks there but their main audience also supports them directly.
The only new music they are getting reps on are Top40 garbage and they have to negotiate under the table with them so their algo keeps pushing them.
Also, they created a bunch of umbrella companies that made generic relaxation music so they could inflate their numbers.

Crowded market and spotify doesn't add anything special. Imagine if Audible branched into becoming a music streaming service. This is one of the basic pieces of research you need to do with tech bullshit, they all claim they will earn 6 million a second but really what they're talking about is the total market size on the highest projection.
