An answer for you would be that yes, you do need your own blockchain. In theory, no, but in practice doing it on an existing blockchain is going to be prohibitively expensive both to develop and run for a game that intensive. Most of the existing ones use their own tokens and don't actually write very much of the game's to the blockchain, the game is just a skin for the token. The current third-worlder-focused "pte" games all do it that way. But they're not games, they're pyramid schemes that pay out enough if $1 is enough in your currency to live on.
