How useful would this information be other than knowing how many shares are out there? If that was indeed the proof of all the synthetic shares, would the SEC be forced to do something about it? There are absolutely consequences for them. They can only hide for so long. The thing to note about Citadel is they are insanely leveraged, and where there is leverage there is leverage you have some extreme risk. The thing about being leveraged via short selling is their leverage actually can't be paid back if the problem gets too big. Don't take it lightly that a $65BN portfolio is borrowing $600M. They can't stop people from DRSing and I bet their "REAL" balance sheet where their shorts are marked-to-market is abysmal. They could underwater to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars for all we know. What other leveraged market participant is ready/willing to pick up their long/short exposures. Who the fuck knows how much notional value they are carrying in terms of derivatives.
All of this risk is just building and building and it's not going away until they are ready to negotiate the closing of the shorts with retail. There is no world where a hedge fund can just walk away from this mess and be all like "deal with it". This is a blatant admission of fraud, illegal shorting, and the regulatory bodies are essentially complicit. Who would even bother risking any money in the market when hedgies can essentially get away with murder and plunder to their hearts content. Oh, and the worst part of this is the economic fallout of teacher's pensions being the ones to eat the losses. This whole calamity is going to be paid for by the taxpayer ultimately.
