i had made most of what i made on oxy and suncore calls. today trying to do puts on CAT but the spreads are so ridiculous on ootm that you essentially have to eat -10% to buy in, then can't get out till the stock drops 20%. bid ask spreads some days can be 60 or 70 cents on a huge stock like that.

i've given up on options for smaller stocks, because it essentially has to get to within 5% of strike for you to even get out. and you typically dont want to be holding that long. trending towards it seems to do nothing even ignoring decay. people just aren't interested and the only customer is the mms algo, which will always fuck you for cents on the dollar and never split the difference in bid ask with you. the only way youre getting money out of the algo is if you were 200% right on the strike.

Options are priced to reflect a risk-neutral position. the MM will calculate what price they think will negate their hedging losses, and put a bid / ask around that theoretical value.
So if they get filled at the offer or bid, they expect to lose on their hedges (or, vice versa, win on their hedges / lose on the option) everything except that little amount between the bid/ask and theoretical value midpoint.
