it's not your long positions causing this, you didn't need to sell your long positions. It's the 1 short SQQQ call that has extra margin requirement because you are liable to sell 100 shares of SQQQ if that call goes in the money. You don't have the ability to get 100 shares if you actually needed to come up with them, so Etrade wants $1000 more dollars to cover the liability of the possibility of this happening. So you selling your $1000 long positions for $1000 cash did nothing because your account is still only $1000. They want you to have $2000
