docker is kinda like super lightweight VMs. It fixes the problem of “well, it works on my machine!”.
Containers are what docker does for virtualization instead of full on VMs with a big fucking hypervisor layer or 2nd OS n sheeeeiiiittt, like KVM (which had some traction going before docker) or virtualbox.

Kubernetes is when you want to manage scaling your whole infrastructure with docker. It’s idempotent, which makes it easier to rollback your fuck-ups.

It’s also built on top of etcd, which has overlap with zookeeper and chubby, which I’ve been doing a lot of reading on lately.
