i'm worth like 1.5 million. it's just not that much money for a family. i still need to work, and will until my mid sixties or so. i really like where we live so i don't want to move, but it's expensive. we have talked about cashing out and buying a tract of land somewhere and not working for a while but it's scary to me to not be employed. i'd do it in a heartbeat if we had maybe 5 mil, one million just aint what it used to be.

Well, Kek (may his name be memed), blesses you with his digits and confirms that you are making the right decision by not acting rich. I do think you could risk retiring on 3 mil though, as long as you are going to be working on something. 3 mil is probably enough to get your kids through school and all that, barring emergencies, assuming you have less than 2, and living in a flyover. If you are in a high COL area, then yea, it's probably 5.

Thanks for the discussion - making this thread to make sure my "pulse" on what money is worth is at least somewhat accurate.

>> No.51314629

>>51314573

That sounds about right. My understanding is that you should be able to get a "safe" 4% post inflation, though it would be less in this climate and then average out.

To be fully honest, I don't ACTUALLY know what instruments do this reliably. I have heard "REIT"s, and "SPY", but SPY is obviously volatile and I am not sure what stocks straight up pay 4% + inflation in dividends. Supposedly some mining stocks do, but again, I don't really see them.

You can also get decent rates on ETH, but there is the slashing. ALGO too, but it's highly variable and ALGO is just not something to put a million USD into. Hell, even ETH really isn't if it's for "stable income."

Can probably get that on rentals, but that's far from passive and ALSO carries risk.

I have 1.2MM and I feel the same way. The only way to do this is to not pay any tax and max short term and long term capital gains to 40k and 80k respectively, since both are taxed at 0% up to that limit if you're married.

At 1.5MM, you have to do meme shit to max the short term capital gain bucket such as QYLD. If we assume 12%, you would need $333k in QYLD to max your short term bucket at 40k. The rest of the 1.167MM would go in a split between VTI/QQQ and you would have to riskly withdraw 5% (instead of 4%) each year to fill the long term capital gain bucket. That would yield $58,350, so you still have room in your long term bucket. You need 1.6MM at 5% (risky withdraw rate) and need 2MM at 4% in index funds to fill up the long term bucket.

Looks like 1.6MM + 333K = 1.93MM is the bare minimum to make it, and even then that is some risky shit with QYLD and a hefty 5% withdraw rate on the index funds. Safe would be 2MM-3MM.

Remember, 0% tax on 40k+80K = 120K, which is nice. Now remember, in order to clear 120k with a job, you would actually need to make $180,451 if you assume a federal and state tax rate of 25% plus 8.5% FICA. This is a perfect example of why you will never make it by wagecucking.

Stocks are forward looking and will probably bottom before shortly before the last rate hike. Real estate lags and will probably bottom 6-12 months after the last rate hike.

If I had to buy something right now I'd probably YOLO all-in on RIO, because I am confident it will weather the international economic storm and keep paying fat dividends for years to come. Invest in a diversified monthly/quarterly dividend paying stock portfolio
Being conservative - let's say that gives you 70k USD a year... I have some safe monthly paying that generate 15% but none the less you get 70k USD a year every year assuming the US economy doesn't just disappear - 70k USD a year outside of 'developed' countries gives you a lifestyle of adventure and luxury if you are smart or just an average life without work if you are dumb....
Idk where yall at but I am in Canada and 50% of capital gains is taxed so you would be taxed on 35k and if you just declare self-employment and write off expenses as you travel and chill you could be getting an extra 5k a year in your pocket from taxes...

Extra DCA mostly major equity indexes, maybe some BTC/ETH, hookers, 5% gold boomey rocks or something.

This. I have 5 mil and still feel like small fish.

I remember a long time ago when I was in boarding school in the EU I was one of the “poor kids” I had like 2k EU for the semester to spend on whatever I wanted.

I remember a friend of mine accessing her bank account out there and in it was 10 million Euros. When asked if that was her family account she said it was her personal account. This was 10 years ago. An 18 year old girl who paid me to do her home work had 10 million to do whatever with.

The commonly accepted view is "4% safe post-inflation" as mentioned above. You could, in theory, retire on $120,000 / year.

>it’s no where near fuck you money.

Right, it's humble middle class without working money.

>>51338314

I used to think I was going to get audited when I started making $40,000 a year because it's "real money". Oh me.

How did you get to the 5 mil? And again, you could retire on 5 mil.

At that amount of money:

1. $4,000,000 into SPY until you figure shit out (though maybe do hold cash until next February in case "da mega crash" is actually coming). Or maybe 3.5 into SPY, .5 into something entirely safe.

2. Figure out what the fuck you want to be - sure, $5,000,000 is not "fuck you money", but it's enough to become a surgeon, start a business, become a pilot, or do whatever the fuck else you want (again, other than throwing money at shit).

35, KHHV, with only 100K saved so far. I feel like a failure. If I had 1MM, I'd all in on some Vanguard dividend ETF and never look back. Even if it halved, it'd still be enough for me to live off 4% divvies rule.

I'd restrict my living expenses to about 20K per year, and basically be freed to live anywhere in the world. Each year, I'd move to a new apt, and live out of a backpack kind of like I'm doing now except I'm at the mercy of my employer and my time is theirs. I desperately want to go visit my online friends and just hang out with them IRL. I'd finally be free to become a real human being. I'd probably return to work after a few years of this, just because of boredom, but at least it'd be my choice.

Because people on the internet aren't wealthy. Their interactions with financial advisors consists of talking to bank wagies who tell them to max out retirement and put the rest into index funds.
Poorfags have no idea about managing wealth because they never had anything to manage. They don't understand that managing wealth is an ongoing process and it needs qualified professionals who don't work for free.

If you want to manage your wealth you would start with a lawyer (he will help you set up a corporate structure with companies and trusts), then a financial advisor (he will help you minimize taxes and preserve your money), and finally a good accountant who will deal with transactions and tax filings.

Financial advice on twitter/reddit/biz is the best example of dunning-kruger where people confuse superficial knowledge for expertise.

I have mixed feelings, I live in leafland but I don't want to stay in this country. Some states in the US would be ideal so maybe spending 1 million on a investment visa would be worth it, but it seems like I need to somehow hire a dozen or two fulltime employees and I don't know much about that and risking 1 million to do it seems dangerous.

I want to retire as well and work on my own projects/hobbies, and I could do that in leafland with $1million, I spend $30k/year usd on my cost of living, so that would more than cover it.
Although I may work for a bit more before quitting because I want to have a higher quality of life, living in an apartment sucks.
Having 1 million would give me a massive savings rate if I was still working, it would basically be like almost doubling my income, and if I'm able to dump all that back into investments/savings it would improve my chances of surviving a bad market.
I'd try to save enough to buy a nice house in cash, or get a down payment on it and pay it off aggressively while I work and then retire when it's paid off completely.

Or maybe I'd travel a bit for a few months to see what's out there. Cost of living in Thailand is cheap, but I hate crowds so idk if it would be worth living there long term, being around non-english speakers and not being able to interact would be isolating, but it's not like I do anything except sit in front of a computer all day anyway.
Maybe I'd change that about me, in retirement I could get 100% focused and dedicated on nutrition and fitness until I was physically attractive.

I retired last year at $4.2m NW, now worth about $3.6m, but DCAing it all back into crypto over the next 2 years. I only spend $60k/year so as long as have $1.5m in stocks I figure I'm good. The rest I will convert back to crypto.
