It's a question of trading future capacity to build infrastructure/development for today's comfort.
Debt is very real, not having to worry about it for 50 years doesn't mean there isn't a point where zero-coupons perpetuals become worthless and the buck stops.

All the power plants are decommissioned. But it's worse than that, all the experienced engineers that we had, all the expertise in inventing them in the first place? They're gone. They're either dead, retired, or working abroad. We don't have the knowledge to build them anymore, or the labour capacity. We have to humiliate ourselves to ask China to build them for us.

The issue is far worse than you imagine. The energy surplus needed to create new means of creating energy is no longer there. The world is about to enter into a long tumble of logistical failures that will result in immense trouble.

Pretty fucked.
It's birds coming home to roost. The country has stagnated for 15 years. Successive govts have done nothing to address this.
Brexit was probably always going to be a failure, but BoJo might have used his thumping majority to effect major changes. He didn't, and so we're here.
A couple of years of Truss & Tories flailing about with Neo-Thatcherism mixed with "handouts" which will end up benefiting energy companies and banks more than anyone else.
But the alternative is civil unrest on a level we've not seen for about 50 years.
Probably Labour getting in after that, and potentially the end of the "old" Tory party as their pensioner voter base die out, and younger professionals ask "what have the Tories ever done for me?"
It's going to take political vision far beyond what any of the current crop of politicians can muster. Probably going to need to reverse 20 years of stagnation or decline by the time they get in.

They keep running over budget and years late. I think for the next one they're building (Sizewell C perhaps?) they're trying to angle it so the taxpayer pays for any overruns. Effectively writing a blank cheque for all sorts of corporate incompetence so they can maintain their dividends.

The UK has failed to understand that economic growth comes from building stuff. The current government just thinks it can cut taxes and that things will magically happen.

The pound would probably rally 10-15% if Labour got in on a mandate and plan to grow the economy. Actually build houses, factories, solar farms, nuclear power plants. Why Labour? Because the pensioners who resist development don't vote for them anyway, so Labour wouldn't have any problem pissing them off.

Britain deserves this. Such a shitty fucking economy, "let's just bet everything on financial services, selling London apartments to the Chinese, and laundering the money of Russian oligarchs, lol".

Utterly, utterly fucked. Britain has next to no natural resources they're willing to exploit; seventy million people (with over one million inbred pajeets and africans added every year!) crammed onto a tiny island; completely trashed the greatest education system in the world (Grammar schools/Russell Group); a sprawling public sector that vastly overpays useless managers instead of those delivering the services (NHS managers, local government and senior 'leadership' in academies all on over £200K per year); absolutely no industrial strategy; no energy security strategy; a people obsessed with nothing other than tattoos, owning a German car on finance and the value of their shitty little house; stifling regulation that crushes innovation and entrepreneurship such that the highest aspiration of the young is the fucking Civil Service 'Fast Stream'; and has let world-class manufacturing specialties wither away to nothing. Our only strategy is to import ever more third-worlders in an attempt to keep wages down and minimise the cost of services, including filling NHS vacancies with unqualified africans who don't actually do any fucking work; whilst simultaneously pumping the property market until the young are reduced to serfdom.

To compound this, we're belligerently snapping at Russia and China, and commiting ourselves to the defence of an EU that is in return trying to bankrupt us and cutting us off from trade. Our geopolitical Grand Strategy is 'do whatever the USA wants us to', with absolutely zero thought given to whether we can afford it, whether we have a competent military (we don't), whether we are getting anything in return, and whether we have secured access to energy (we haven't).

>The UK is looking at an Argentina-style fall from a high income country to a middle income one.

I completely agree. Once Truss manages to condense a dozen years of Thatcherite hollowing-out into eighteen months, I'm convinced the UK will independently invent Peronism, then speedrun 20th Century Argentina.

I can't prove it, but it just feels right. The mix of growing socialist sentiment and patriotic arrogance, obsession with redistributive justice amongst the young juxtaposed with the protectionist sentiment of the property-owning old. General lack of productive industry paired with a small number of highly-profitable, nepotistically-gatekept enterprises. Ethnic tribalism and class division. I don't think anyone post-Truss will try and square these circles- or (very) charitably politicians have been trying and failing for the past forty years- and so we'll just attempt to pander to all of them at once, drive the currency into the ground, and force the middle class out of the country, emigrating to Australia and USA.

France, Japan, Germany and the US all have nuclear plants for export designed in the last decade, the knowledge is not only there but still developing.

Perhaps not quite as fucked as a lot of europe but still fucked. We have been barely treading water for twenty years while making beyond supid policy decisions.
The sad thing is that we have, or at least had, the foundations of a good modern economy but it was just wasted and allowed to decay: our education is world class, our infrastructure was quality, our currency was solid, our reputation was good, and we were perfectly poised to remain relevant as an advanced service economy. Instead the only thing we have is the City of London and British overseas accounting, which does nothing for the average person.

Are we all on the same page with Link staking and HMRC? They claimed staking was a taxable event and should be taxed thus, but this is was because normal staking involves disposal of assets as your staked tokens are exchanged for another token. This is not the Link staking model, and we receive no equivalent tokens back when we stake. ALl we receive are rewards in Link when they are earned. Therefore we should NOT be paying capital gains tax on our Links upon staking. DOES everyone agree with this?

Either way, capital gains is not related to staking and to that extent you cannot count capital losses against it. Capital losses can be bottled for years though.

Yeah. I agree.

You pay Income Tax on your staking rewards, so if I get 100 AVAX as staking rewards when AVAX is worth $20, I should declare $2000.

It is for depositing in lending protocols that you are classed as "disposing of an asset", because by depositing on AAVE you'd swap AVAX for aAVAX.

It is only a disposal if you are given another token you'd use to redeem your collateral.

I agree with a lot of what's in here. The country is fucked. Both Labour and the Tories are near identical but Labour will more openly and quickly move things towards third worldism. I'm not even sure if they'll be worse since the Tories bribe only pensioners while Labour will bribe everyone.

The biggest issue is regulations, councils, and nearby residents being able to delay and block new housing and building.

The second biggest issue is illegal immigration and migration from shit countries causing the demographics to become third world and shit.

After that, there's many other things: bloated public sector (including defined benefit pensions and shitty quangos (Office for Students, etc.)), people on shitloads of benefits (pensions, council housing in central London, etc.), Soviet Union style NHS, ridiculously lenient criminal justice system, the equality act and membership of the European Court of Human Rights, funding of pointless university courses, overfunding of education system (pupil premium, apprenticeship levy) with anti-white and anti-British leftist beliefs becoming embedded within it (and the rest of the public sector), the BBC being on course to be funded from general taxation, lack of free speech, and high taxes as a result of the most of the previous stuff.

In the 1970's OPEC raised gas prices from $3 to like $10 so as a result Nixon put in price caps at like $4. This led to gigantic gas lines and shortages.

Not only does price fixing create inevitable shortages due to the lowering the prices increasing the demand (imagine if houses were capped at $100,000, would you be more likely to try and buy a house? Of course you would), it also lowers the supply because as the lower more businesses will drop out and not sell anything at all, and instead decide to use their money to invest in literally anything else.

What is even worse is that instead of actually working, people would sit in these lines for hours and hours and produce nothing. When you take into account the average income of these people and multiply it by the time spent sitting in line, even with a price cap of $4, they would end up spending way more than the $10 for the gas due to the opportunity cost.

That's true right now, but it doesnt explain why the outlook is so bleak. You don't just have to look at the potential problems, but the British popular and elite zeitgeist- how we are reacting and will continue to react to the issues that face us. It's not that solutions don't exist, but that we won't adopt them. We're a culture of unresolved contradictions. You can see it right now with Ukraine. Everyone wants to LARP about sacrifices and tough decisions like it's 1939, but we also have the expectation that no-one should ever suffer any inconvenience ever without the state making it right. Realistically, you can have one or the other. This applies to so many things. The government will continue to refuse to make difficult decisions- and likely the leadership and expertise to carry them through is lacking on both sides of the political spectrum anyway- and so we'll just prevaricate and print money until we're in the ground. The country won't shatter in the exact same way that Argentina never truly has, it will instead just get shittier and shittier.

that's what my post was about. HMRC were saying you SHOULD be paying CG tax at the point you stake because it counts as asset disposal. This was earlier this year they hit out with that and it was a real wtf moment. You're fucked if America doesn't come to save your asses, which they actually might in the next 5 years.

The rest of Western Europe might just cannibalize itself and suck China's cock if China itself doesn't fall apart.

All-in-all this could have been easily prevented if your elite class actually gave a shit about empowering your countries instead of sucking you dry until there was nothing left but bare bones.

Demographics, in 30 years every city in Britain will be full of niggers. We're already a minority in London, Leicester, and Bradford to name a few major cities. Don't have to be a genius to know that Britain will become the 3rd world in our lifetimes. Why would anyone want to stay in their country if they know they (and their children) have no future in it?

I dont doubt it. One of the reasons the UK has been able to keep on ticking along in a superficially stable condition is that it has sucked up a huge pool of young, often talented, Eastern European labour for twenty-five years. This has covered for failings of the education system- we produce more drama students than plumbers, welders, carpenters, IT, etc- covered the costs of an increasing number of natives dropping out of society altogether and subsisting on welfare, and allowed cheap goods and services which cover up for the decline of wages in real terms post-2007.

The problem is that- even if Brexit hadn't happened- that labour pool is mostly now exhausted. Living conditions and hence wage expectations have increased for Eastern Euros so many dont want to come, the demographic bulge of young workers has gone (Poland has atrocious demographics and a declining population due to migration, for example), and the UK is now feeling the full effect of blowing up it's population without spending on the required infrastructure (schools, hospitals, roads, power, housing...). Plan B, import third-worlders, is bringing a huge number of problems- notably differences in attitude towards work and social conduct, a lack of skilled workers amongst them, and the increasingly painful consequences of that absence of infrastructure investment. This is exacerbated by a now-weakening pound which will make the UK even less attractive to *skilled* foreign workers and a long time horizon for any domestic investment in solving issues (education reform, welfare reform, nuclear power, etc) to pay off- even if any political party was willing, had the vision, could find the people to implement them, and was capable of doing so. Hence the doomed fate of can-kicking into an accelerating terminal decline.

Argentina was one of the richest and most advanced countries in the world in 1913. Their politics created a system that destroyed them. See: >>51287875
