No, it's what you owe after your stay. In some states they charge you for taking care of you while in prison. They'll even include medical bills retroactively, that way when you get out you're saddled with crippling debt and no way to get a job good enough to pay it back! That way you go right back to crime and get caught again or kill yourself.

Money in savings is effectively part of your portfolio, just allocated to cash. Similarly, equity in your home is an allocation of your portfolio towards real estate, the value of cars you own is an investment in that asset class, etc.

Is 100k in cash a smart move? If it's more than, say, 10% of your portfolio, probably not. But at least it hasn't lost any value YTD.

But nothing wrong with being able to sock back more if your able to and especially not if it doesn't impact your other investment plans (401k,brokerage,etc). It can help distinguish you at stereotypical midwest companies that are using AWS at a larger company-wide scale, but you will still need to grind at least a little leetcode for their technical assessment. Finishing the blind 75 would typically be overkill for those positions though, so not a ton.

yes it is called FDIC insurance which your cash position in a brokerage does NOT have
Your emergency fund should, in my opinion, be split across at least 2 different FDIC-insured financial institutions so if shit gets real and the Fed tries to doomp it you'll probably at least still be able to get some immediate cash from somewhere.
Now if you're 100% cash you'll get rekt by inflation of course but that's what your brokerage is for

With that said. Brick-and-mortar bank savings accounts are a meme. Online-only institutions usually at least pay some interest while brick-and-mortar is basically 0%.

Rarely do we get to enjoy such distilled retardation outside /pmg/.

1) FDIC insurance is up to $250k in the event of bank failure. Nobody here has >$250k in cash in Joe Blow's Subprime Credit Union.

2) If the FDIC defaults, cuts the $250k limit, or stops covering a bank, you should not worry about your dollars. You should worry about how much food you can produce and how long your supply of running water will last.

3) If you actually want anon to go #FullyHedged /cashgang/, you'd tell him to setup a non-US bank account and allocate a large portion towards a variety of crypto wallets that he has keys for.

Kek the debt interest ain't that high nor is it long. 4 years if I decide to keep the payments at the current level. No gotcha clause if I pay it off sooner. (Some places they stick it to you if you pay it off sooner; which is why you should always read the fine print on the documents). That 2000 a month is after all my deductions at whatnot is taken out. Including what I dump into my emergency fund. You forget I also have a fat pension and a 401k. So basically all is covered by my income with some green left over each month. With more green a coming next year (6% or 12% pay hike, all depends on what the legislators do)

That's already covered by credit cards (which everyone here should have a few of for cashback alone, paying off the balance in full every month). Ditto rent and mortgage payments - nobody becomes homeless due to bank failures because
>While every bank failure is unique, there are standard policies and procedures that the FDIC follows in making deposit insurance payments. It is the FDIC's goal to make deposit insurance payments within two business day of the failure of the insured institution.

Plenty of them do. But, again, even if your bank collapses *out of nowhere* the *very* day that rent is due, you have FDICbux in 2 days. Call it a week.

Any landlord that kicks you out for being a couple days late due to a bank failure - when, again, we're assuming only your bank failed rather than the entire financial system - was probably already looking to get rid of you.

Go ahead and look for it, because I'd love to hear about that. Most likely some larger accounts had to wait that long for their entire six figure balances to unfreeze while the FDIC ~immediately made a couple grand available to every account. But that kind of boring detail doesn't grab headlines or cause people to click through to ads.

>And that is exactly what kept our Silent Gen ancestors alive
Prior to the silent gen (pre-FDIC), bank runs were A Thing. The Silents just had Depression paranoia ingrained secondhand (and suffered mightily for it - how do you think Buffett managed to get all his ludicrously rigged deals early on in his career?)

Yea. I was in a very dark place. Realized I have people I love that can't depend on me and that got me out of my neet coma.

I got the degree online. It is from a state school and is accredited. It worked out for me because I had a job already with the state set up for me and it just solidified my position more.

If you are a neet I highly recommend getting a government job. It's not exciting, but it will allow you to have that neet lifestyle with low effort.

I did finance because I would need to take more credits for accounting and managerialism is gay. If you got nothing going on I recommend an accounting degree. If online even better. It's a plug and play degree whereas finance is more abstract. Any business degree is easy if you make minimum effort. It's not difficult, and you will surprise yourself.

If you can get the degree for cheap and maybe get a good reference from a close acquaintance (mom dad family friend) you'll be set and on your way. Just get started with something and actually reach your goal. Don't make 5-10 year plan. Goal should be enrolling or accomplishing something you can do within 6-12 months. Baby steps.

Only if you were a bigass hedge fund or owned Lehman bonds, shit like that. The FDIC did a writeup on how Dodd-Frank even cut down on that bullshit if it reoccurs: https://www.fdic.gov/regulations/reform/lehman.html

But for average wagies (i.e. everyone ITT), there was never an issue or loss of money: https://www.kiplinger.com/article/investing/t023-c000-s001-what-happens-to-lehman-s-customers.html

>Lehman Brothers, the brokerage, will close its doors, but only after customer accounts have been transferred to another broker-dealer. Meanwhile, customer assets are, by law, separate from the broker's own accounts. So Lehman's troubles aren't yours -- except for the impact on the market overall, and by extension, your portfolio. The Securities and Exchange Commission made a point of saying that it was on-site, enforcing the rules to make sure Lehman has adequate liquidity and is protecting customer assets.

>What's more, Lehman, like all brokerage firms, is a member of the Securities Investor Protection Corp., a consortium that provides insurance to investors on their brokerage account if their broker goes belly up. But SIPC, which covers up to $500,000 in securities and $100,000 in cash, only kicks in when customer assets go missing -- usually because of theft, fraud or unauthorized trading. SIPC announced that as of September 15, all of Lehman's customers' assets were accounted for and that it didn't anticipate having to get involved in liquidating the firm.

US shale reserves, Biden SPR sales, and a potential Iran nuclear deal all flood the market with supply. Meanwhile Europe dying and Chinese COVID lockdowns kill demand. Cutting 100k is a warning sent in response to those things.

The key part of their statement today is actually saying they may call a snap meeting before the next one on October 5th. That's up to MBS/the Saudis.

Life doesn’t get better when you have more money, you’re just miserable living in a better area code and can go eat for dinner whatever you want and can drink yourself to sleep every night helped by unisom, melatonin or Xanax..... Having money doesn’t make you happy, it just makes you feel like shit surrounded by nicer things. I used to sleep in my parents house and worked at a warehouse making $11 an hour and I was actually happier then than I am now, Thank you Jesus Christ I don’t have to go back. When you get money everyone expects you to help them out and when you don’t they hate you, when you’re broke you’re just another one of the guys who is struggling and everyone makes jokes.... it’s completely different when others know you have money.... sometimes life is better when you’re surrounded by the people you’re around who know you’re all ngmi, instead of being the person who made it and they all resent you for it.

I did lol, well kind of anyways
my efund is spread out across:
> brokerage (life emergencies) - no FDIC
> national-size bank (brokerage emergencies) - FDIC
> local bank (systematic emergencies, maybe the little guys will make it, mine are kind of fuckups sometimes though so honestly this is shaky but hey at least their tellers are nice) - FDIC

I can't really think of a good way to further reduce systematic risk aside unironic cash in the mattress but that's too far for me at the time being. I guess maybe two separate local banks but dealing with one is enough of a PITA.

>A couple guys with box cutters ultimately caused more damage to the US than anyone since Yamamoto
you know, the thing that gets me at this point isn't even that they did it necessarily (though fuck them for that too), it's that they NEVER admitted it and until recently all in our gov were too spineless to call them out on it. In a better timeline, we would have bombed all the Sauds' palaces to ashes instead of droning civilians for years in various godforsaken deserts and trying to instill puppet regimes in countries that have never had a democratic gov.

Original horse meat restrictions were due to a perception that horse meat was being sold fraudulently as beef and that it was less safe and more likely to be contaminated. The latter claim was false, a fabrication by the beef industry. Horse meat was legalized during WWI and became important as cars displaced horses and then the great depression happened. Horse meat lost popularity after WWII and was ultimately banned once it was no longer considered culturally acceptable, and when there was no longer any economic justification for keeping it on the market (horses are more expensive to raise than cattle for just beef, and work horses were all but retired, and wild mustangs were now protected).

So yurop and chinese markets have absolutely been heemed. When does US markets suffer the same fate?

The only thing keeping SPY around 400 is the hopium that there won't be a recession and earnings won't be damaged. Surely that is not is correct. Is it?

Europe and China are two huge markets and even in US most normies are tapped out and broke.

Well we aren't in COVID lockdown and, despite Jim Brandon's best efforts, have enough energy to keep the lights on in important parts of the country. The US will be hit by earnings and supply chain collapses from those two basket case regions, but should fare better overall.
