It's basically gambling. The popularity and value mostly changes when celebrities tweet or random news stories. This cant be accurately predicted and it's too popular to ever make the 100,000 fold profits from getting them when they first came out for pennies.

You might get lucky and double your money in a year, or lose everything and off your self.

It's a speculative market, where items have negligible intrinsic value. Money can be made by correctly buying at a lower price than you think it will have in the future and selling when you think the price will drop. But there is a risk it will become worth the intrinsic value(a useless string of characters and a used flash drive).
