JPow had been tossing and turning. He hears what people say behind his back.
"He's no Volker"
"He doesn't have what it takes to be a great Fed chair"
You could see his stuttering discomfort in previous FOMC meetings, the anger slowly building up. He felt powerless while mumu and reporters alike mocked him.
That changed today. He had a confident stride and was fully poised to what it takes. Even raising black unemployment if needed. 10%? Rookie numbers.
"I could set a new world record", he thought.
The market bends to Jerome H. Powell's will, and no one else's. We are blessed to witness this momentous occasion today.

they also hired 20k workers for the 2020 season - I too thought that headline was bullish, but it's their typical move
they have almost $2 billion in debt to pay off
their free cash flow is ass
the short float is only 10% with last I looked 0.5 days to cover
at first glance it is enticing, but when you dig deeper I don't know if there is anything there
there is no way they get out the hole they are in without a big cash injection either through even more debt, or by diluting shareholders even more
if the share price runs up, they will dilute (again)
it is possible, and the risk / reward is such that you could gain 4x and lose 1x, so it's not awful, but there is so much stacked against it, that one decent Halloween season isn't going to save it
It also has the double edged sword of meme stock, where if AMC/GME/BBBY have a bad day they'll drag it down - or because of PRTY low share price, and irrational belief in this Halloween season being crazy for parties / costumes / party city causes a meme stock frenzy for it
I think it is a trap - a get rich quick trap

Naked puts on stocks you want to buy. The stocks you want to buy are value stocks (especially those that reliably pay good dividends), as well as hedging ETFs (eg HDGE, COMT, TAIL, SARK, UUP, VIX, and VIXM). If you are using margin, I would strongly advise to devote about half of your buying power in those hedging etfs.

Ideally sell those puts about 1-2 months out, and at 1 standard deviation out of the money (naked puts on the hedging ETFs are better at about 1-2 years out, and at at the money).

Don't buy options (they are sucker's bet) except when you want to get into speculative stocks (eg you have reason to think a stock is going to pump and would like to buy a call instead of paying all that money for the stock). Or if you want to hedge buy buying puts (said puts should be at least 1 year out to minimize money loss through theta decay).

Basically treat options as a way to get paid to buy and sell stocks you would like to own anyway long term.

Leveraged ETFs are worse than options for the exact same reason you think options are bad. That is, you can get screwed from leverage when the market turns even slightly against you.

A cash secured put is no riskier than buying a stock in a cash account. Naked puts on margin are only riskier to the extent that they are leveraged. Which is why knowing how to hedge and diversifying into uncorrelated assets is an absolute must for margin investors.

>>51118955
>What about selling cash-secured puts on stocks you want to buy?
This is unironically they best strategy, especially for people new to options. You get paid to buy the dip.

Even academic studies show that the best option traders are long term investors.

Selling puts only gets really dangerous when you use margin, but that is true for any investment. Margin requirements on Reg T are more lax on naked puts than on stocks (5x leverage vs 2x for stocks), so that may be where they gain their risky reputation (same with futures, as SPAN margin can get you 20x leverage)

DIVO, JEPI, and SCHD are good choices if you want serious yield with lower volatility. A 50k portfolio could net you $400/month in passive income (assuming no leverage is use), with the potential that that dividend would increase as time goes on due to dividend growth.

T-bills are basically like putting money in a savings account and hoping you can get by on the interest. They are the safest investment, but the interest is just too low for any serious investing

Everyone except IBKR and maybe Robin Hood are total kikes about their margin rates.

There isn't reason to charge 10% interest on a secured loan that you can immediately liquidate at will for cash (ie its basically riskless for the broker)

That said, if you sell naked puts on margin, you don't pay any interest (since you don't actually borrow money to buy anything). Naked puts are basically covered calls, so selling them on margin is probably one of the best strategies if you want to use leverage to gain passive income

no they would bail it out if that happened

EVERYTHING in the market right now is dependent on the Fed, and Congress (for fiscal spending). If there is genuinely catastrophic unemployment... they can just pivot. The thing is, there is NOT catastrophic or even concerning unemployment right now so bobos are delusional if they think a pivot is going to happen imminently. Even a mild recession probably wouldn't be enough. I personally think Powell will keep raising rates until the gov can't pay (lagging inflation such that the debt/GDP continues to fall during the hikes), and at that point Congress will step in with price controls.

Strangles, straddles and iron condors for low delta to delta neutral plays. Verticals/backspreads for directional plays.

They are all just a combination of short options for premium and long options for risk/margin control. I think verticals are the easiest for new people to get their heads around as it's a directional play with defined risk and closest to what they are used to doing.

I'm willing to bet money that Jerome and Biden had a verbal agreement to go easy on rate hikes if the government would stop exacerbating inflation. Then Biden and the dems broke the agreement by going full ham on spending in preparation for the midterms, making Jpow dial up the hawkishness to 11.

I legitimately think inflation has changed the meta with respect to stimmies. Those debtmaxxed middle class folks rolling up to the food banks in their leased BMWs were probably in favor of unlimited brrworks before, but probably aren't now they realized how much inflation it creates (ie - they maxxed out their credit card again when they got a raise and then surprise pikachu'd when store prices went up right after). I see this midterm season as being primarily men vs women with women voting D purely on abortion while men vote R seeing blueteam does to the economy. Stimmies, if they happen, will be indirect such as this student denbt cancellation that's supposedly going to happen, and given many probably weren't paying anything this at best would maintain the status quo.

Admitedly that mall is way overdeveloped and the city is clearly desperate for businesses to fill the larger spaced. I went in the afternoon, which should be "prime" shopping time, but it looked like they just their restock shipment in recently. Who knows how long these pallets have been here full of stuff for. Hey guys before we get into this thread, I want to talk about /smg/'s sponsor for this evening: ProShares! They've been at the forefront of the ETF revolution since 2006 and, with more than $60 billion in assets, they now offer one of the largest lineups of ETFs on the market. ProShares is the leader in strategies such as dividend growth, interest rate hedged bond and geared (leveraged and inverse) ETF investing. ProShares continues to innovate with products that provide strategic and tactical opportunities for investors to enhance returns and manage risk. Their lineup of funds includes those focused on equities, fixed income, alternative investments, and volatility. ProShares also puts a twist on these investments by offering both leveraged ETFs and inverse funds! They offer over 140 different products across different asset classes, sectors, and market segments. Products that involve asset classes seek to track the investment performance of equities, fixed income, commodities, and real estate. Products that involve different industries and market segments follow emerging and developing markets as well as individual countries in Europe and Asia.

Now, back to the thread!
