[BRIEFING.COM] The stock market has been volatile since Fed Chair Powell's speech. There was a knee-jerk sell off, followed by a bounce and then another sell off.

The speech itself left an impression that the Fed is not entertaining the notion of a pivot to a rate-cut cycle anytime soon. Notably, Mr. Powell acknowledged that efforts to reduce inflation "will also bring some pain to households and businesses" but that failing to restore price stability would mean far greater pain.

The Treasury market had a whipsaw reaction also, but ultimately yields trended higher. The 2-yr note yield is up five basis points to 3.43% while the 10-yr note yield is up one basis point to 3.04%.

The final August University of Michigan Index of Consumer Sentiment checked in at 58.2 (Briefing.com consensus 55.1). That was better than the preliminary reading of 55.1 and up from the final July reading of 51.5. In the same period a year ago, the Index of Consumer Sentiment stood at 70.3.

The key takeaway from the report is that the gains in sentiment were broad based and aided by the recent deceleration in inflation that coincided with falling gasoline prices.
