Their balance sheet is trash. They have zero assets if they are ever forced to close and are defacto guaranteed losses not only for the DTCC but also pose systemic risk to ever other bank and hedge fund if their derivative exposures are too large for any single institution to take over.
This is pretty serious shit going down. Stocks are trading at extreme valuations so there is a LOT of room for them to go down in price. And if someone such as the DTCC is forced to liquidate assets to close the GME short position, there is likely no one able to provide the liquidity necessary short of a collaboration of all the Investment banks if not relying solely on the Fed.

It's just their balance sheet. They have $65BN in assets and a liability for like $60BN for "securities sold, still need to be bought" or something like that. All they have (this was like 6months-year ago) is $5BN to buy back every single share they sold short before they go into receivership. That line item is not marked to market,and it could have been accrued when GME was $4-10. Not a chance in hell they can close it out at $140 per share.
