Hey guys before we get into this thread, I want to talk about /smg/'s sponsor for this evening: Direxion Leverage ETFs! They're the top provider of financial products for investors who want more than the status quo. Direxion has approximately $30.8 billion in assets under management and their index-based products deliver directional options, magnified exposure, and long-term, rules-based strategies. For example, their Leveraged and Inverse ETFs provide opportunities for traders to magnify short term perspectives with daily 3X and 2X leverage, utilize bull and bear funds for both sides of the trade, and trade through rapidly changing markets. Their Strategic & Thematic ETFs help buy-and-hold investors achieve long-term out-performance when compared to passive indexes, while seeking more specific objectives such as higher income, enhanced diversification, reduced volatility, excess returns, and more. Direxion's role is to complement your core investment strategies, not to replace them. Their funds allow you to seek opportunities in all market conditions offering fresh solutions to challenge old standards. At Direxion, they are focused on your success. They continuously strive to provide you with the innovative products, consistent performance, and on-the-ground support to help you to take advantage of opportunities, execute your strategies, deliver for your clients, and grow your business-regardless of market conditions.

Now, back to the thread!

two reasons
* there are highly paid people whose day job is to research companies and estimate their value. Most people's stock picking is stuff like "I will buy KO because coca cola is sold everywhere", and that isnt insight, Berkshire Hathaway analysts priced that fact in 30 to 50 years ago. If you pick a small company and read their 100-page financial statements and use your in-depth sector knowledge then maybe you can pick stocks better than the market. Anything less and you're just gambling
* stocks are very volatile. Individual stock positions with no leverage can easily go to zero, or do a 3x, or do a 10x, sometimes within months. If you run a portfolio with 10 tickers, which is already a lot of work to keep up with the financials of the companies, one day you can wake up to 90% of your life savings having evaporated. Holding 5000 tickers through an ETF like VTI smooths out that volatility so you dont rope next time the tech sector implodes.

It doesnt really take that long to study a company. Goldman entry level analysts crank out presentations in an hour for investors whenever earnings drop. You can do deep dive the first time but its really not necessary to look outside the main 1 pager of income. Yes etfs reduce volatility, but it also reduces gains with it. You arent going to wake up 1 day and see VTI suddenly removing amazon or aapl. So might as well just buy individual stocks.

But are those presentations used for investment decisions by the firm, or just to impress boomers who hold their accounts there?
Because I would argue that research goes even beyond going through publicly available information. There is a funny SEC rule that forbids companies from disclosing material nonpublic information to only a subset of investors. Yet investment firms like Goldman love sending analysts to the firms, to talk to the CEOs, to see how things are going. Nobody gets punished, officially no nonpublic information is being disclosed at these meetings. Yet clearly the banks get some value out of attending such meetings, perhaps just by seeing whether the CEO is a party bro or a nerd. Or they wouldnt go to them, right?

Trump hate it, so the liberals naturally love it. Tiktok promotes homosexuality and trannies, it is part of the agenda. It is not going away ever. I created an account and right from the start it showed me gay old Mexicans making out with inspirational music playing. Absolutely degenerate filth. Since I disliked it, next up was some dumb white bitch talking about abortion bans being unjust. Its pure liberal new world order propaganda

Its for themselves and their clients both private and public. But my point is that its not that hard to analyze some of the companies press releases. You can even just look at the earnings report and that week of trading to see what the firms all thought.

I will make a case for why you should pick your own stocks.

1) People say you should buy ETFs, because in recent history they have done very well. On a wider timescale they are still good. I think they are so popular, because the last 10-20 years were basically one huge bull market with very few hiccups. This heavily skews the perception towards ETFs. What many people often have not considered is the ETFization of the market, the effects of which we are just about to find out.

2) Stock picking requires knowledge and a lot of work to understand the current macroeconomic picture and individual financial conditions. This is far above the expertise the average retail investor can bring to the table. People like buffet seem to do better than the average in downtrends.

tl;dr: as long as line go up ETFs should work fine, but once shit goes sour indiviual stock picking might better protect against losses.

this, also the "DCA index fund/ETFs and hold" strategy is retarded and will demolish retards' net worths when they could do so much better if they used their brain and followed some trends. Doesn't take a genius to find out that holding a good position in USD is smart right now for example. Once you start picking stocks and actually making some strategic decisions instead of just braindead DCA into the broader market, you start being able to take advantage of bullish situations and avoiding bearish ones

But apparently this is too much to ask of most people. It really isn't, but the seemingly neverending bull market has smoothened brains too much I think

hold USD and gold and on the equities side avoid overpriced and speculative trash, have exposure to big stable well run companies with divvies, also have a foot in the energy markets (with the caveat that energy tends to go down a bunch during economic downturns so watch out for that).

It could mean goods shortages for cheap chink shit. But still, learn how to eat rice and beans, get a roommate.

I'm cautiously optimistic about a "soft" landing. Home prices have peaked, but it doesn't mean they'll crater like in 2008. The Fed does not want anyone to be able to afford a home and will buy as many MBS as they deem necessary to prevent that. Just watch their balance sheets, they're still buying.

Oil isn't showing strength yet, so next month's CPI should also be muted. Stocks will crab as hike fears are balanced with mediocre earnings numbers.

Nah geologist. There are a ton of rigs picking up and no one can find workers right now. Nabors rigs are half empty or short handed. Most of the wells being drilled in ND and Texas will be frack. Not sure how things are doing on production side though. Ton of pads and leases set up in Wyoming but a lot of it is federal land so no one can get to it with Biden in there. I was worried a bit with oil falling so much lately but Im feeling its going to be good for next 2-3 years hovering $60-90 range.

thanks mate. Yeah as far as supply side goes there won't be an issue probably, unless the shale companies get ahead of themselves again which they probably won't. hmm maybe. Lots of crises on the horizon. Right now it's recession fears, next up is China crash, after that is European debt crisis 2.0... Not to mention prospects for war, esp. between China and not-Taiwan. I wonder what would happen to oil if China got sanctioned?
